Medina of Tunis, Tunisia | Discovering The Old Town | مدينة تونس ، تونس

The medina of Tunis is the historic heart of Tunis, considered as one of the best-preserved Arab-Muslim cities, and has been listed as a Unesco World Heritage since 1979.

It was one of the largest and richest cities of the Islamic world. Some 700 monuments, including palaces, mosques, mausoleums, madrasas, and fountains, testify to this remarkable past.

The medina of Tunis was presented in an oval form, surrounded by a continuous wall and dominated by a Kasbah, the seat of government. It is built around the religious center of the Grand Mosque Ezzaitouna, opening onto a large platform for both marketplace, public meetings, and place for military parades, near which were arranged Souks merchants and artisans. Around these souks rise private houses with their narrow streets. - goulettevillageharbor

#MedinaSousse #Tunisia Tour of Medina Sousse (Part 1)

Medina of Sousse
Sousse was an important commercial and military port during the Aghlabid period (800–909) and is a typical example of a town dating from the first centuries of Islam. With its kasbah, ramparts, medina (with the Great Mosque), Bu Ftata Mosque and typical ribat (both a fort and a religious building), Sousse was part of a coastal defence system.

In this video, am gonna take you on a pleasant tour around the old alleys of the old city of Tunis, where you will be able to see all kinds of traditional items, but am also going to guide you through a challenge I made in this video on how to spend a whole day there with only 5TD the equivalent of 2 dollars .(This option is only for broke students like me tho)

A walking tour of Tunis Medina, an incredible UNESCO World Heritage Site - مدينة تونس ????????

Join Mohamed and I as we take a walking tour of Tunis Medina, a 295 hectare UNESCO World Heritage Site filled with over 700 historic monuments. Today we will visit mosques, statues, markets, Fondouks, Dars, madrasas, souks, palaces and even former synagogues.

Tunis Medina was founded in 698 AD and architectural historians consider it an outstanding example of Arab-Muslim urban development. The dense web of narrow streets surrounding the main mosque is little changed since the Hafsid Dynasty (late Middle Ages), which can make for a very confusing walk if you head in without a guide or detailed map!

This walk was completed in summer 2022. Note it is not comprehensive, there are hundreds of other sites in the medina that I hope to bring you over the coming months!

Throughout its history, the Medina has witnessed the rise and fall of different civilizations, from the Carthaginians and Romans to the Muslims and Ottomans. Episode#26 Tunisia Market & Medina

Some of the Best produce we've ever purchased on our trip so far. We venture into the small town of Bouficha. There really is not a lot there until every Saturday morning there is a market where locals come from miles around to purchase just about any goods you can think of. Oh and WATCH OUT for the fresh chickens that you might like to buy....No salmonella here!

Hammamet is the main town near Port Yasmine Marina. The reported number of inhabitants varies from 100,000 to 400,000 and the population quadruples due to tourists' arrival in the summer. We also visit the world famous Madina built around the 15th Century.

Special mention and thanks must go to Peter Chilton who is a wealth of knowledge about Tunisia and in particular this area where we are staying.

We hope you enjoy this video.

Grace, peace and fair winds.

Medina of Tunis - UNESCO World Heritage Site - Tunisia

Ferries to Tunisia:

Tunis (Arabic: تونس‎, Tūnis) is the (political) capital of both Tunisia and the Tunis Governorate. It is Tunisia's largest city, with a population of 728,453 as of 2004; the greater metropolitan area holds some 2,412,500 inhabitants.

Situated on a large Mediterranean Sea gulf (the Gulf of Tunis), behind the Lake of Tunis and the port of La Goulette (Halq al Wadi), the city extends along the coastal plain and the hills that surround it. At the centre of more modern development (from the colonial era and later) lies the old medina. Beyond this district lie the suburbs of Carthage, La Marsa, and Sidi Bou Said.

The medina is found at the centre of the city: a dense agglomeration of alleys and covered passages, full of intense scents and colours, boisterous and active trade, and a surfeit of goods on offer ranging from leather to plastic, tin to the finest filigree, tourist souvenirs to the works of tiny crafts shops.

Just through the Sea Gate (also known as the Bab el Bahr and the Porte de France) begins the modern city, or Ville Nouvelle, transversed by the grand Avenue Habib Bourguiba (often referred to by popular press and travel guides as the Tunisian Champs-Élysées), where the colonial-era buildings provide a clear contrast to smaller, older structures. As the capital city of the country, Tunis is the focus of Tunisian political and administrative life; it is also the centre of the country's commercial activity. The expansion of the Tunisian economy in recent decades is reflected in the booming development of the outer city where one can see clearly the social challenges brought about by rapid modernization in Tunisia.
