AUSCHWITZ: The Complete DISTURBING Tour | WARNING: Actual footage

*LEARN HOW I TRAVEL FULL-TIME*
????

*WELCOME TO AUSCHWITZ*
The Complete DISTURBING Tour, WARNING: Actual footage. Auschwitz concentration camp is a place where the bleak reality of WWII conditions suffered by its inmates has not lost its intensity, sending shivers down the spine of its visitors and remaining reflection-provoking for years to come. Auschwitz-Birkenau was the primary site of the Nazi's final solution to the Jewish problem. It is estimated that 1.3 million people were sent to Auschwitz and of these, 1.1 million died. Most people deported to Auschwitz were sent immediately to the gas chambers. Those who did not die in the gas chambers died of other causes, including starvation, infection, medical experimentation, and forced labor.
Auschwitz isn’t somewhere you ‘want’ to visit, but it’s certainly somewhere that you should visit - a place you'll never forget.

Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it - *George Santayana.*

The Task of the Humanist: Bringing Hannah Arendt Home to Bombay, lecture by Professor Homi K. Bhabha

The 50 year celebrations of the Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan Mumbai began with a keynote lecture 'The Task of the Humanist: Bringing Hannah Arendt Home to Bombay' by Professor Homi K. Bhabha.

Professor Bhabha is the Anne F. Rothenberg Professor of the Humanities in the Department of English, the Director of the Mahindra Humanities Center, and the Senior Advisor on the Humanities to the President and Provost at Harvard University.

Bhabha is one of the most important figures in contemporary postcolonial studies. He has developed a number of the field's key concepts, such as hybridity, mimicry, difference, and ambivalence, terms that, according to Bhabha's theory, describe ways in which colonised peoples have resisted the power of the coloniser.

His honours include the Padma Bhushan award, a prestigious award from the Republic of India that recognizes outstanding contribution in literature and education (2012); the Humboldt Research Prize (2015), and honorary degrees from Université Paris 8, University College London, and the Free University Berlin. Professor Bhabha is a member of the Academic Committee for the Shanghai Power Station of Art, and the Mobilising the Humanities Initiating Advisory Board (British Council). He is an advisor on the Contemporary and Modern Art Perspectives (C-MAP) project at the Museum of Modern Art New York, a Trustee of the UNESCO World Report on Cultural Diversity, and the Curator in Residence of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. In 1997 he was profiled by Newsweek as one of “100 Americans for the Next Century.”

On the Corner w/ Aly Alexandra - Part 1 - Chicago at the Crossroad by Brian Schodorf

Why and how did Chicago get so segregated over the years? Where did it begin? Here's just one of the many perspectives you'll get on this channel to better understand how decades-old policies led to where and why Chicago is the way it is. Sometimes we'll cover the stories live...and sometimes, the stories are better told by the people who live these experiences directly. Enjoy and tune in tomorrow evening for Part II. Special thanks to Brian Schodorf / Schdorf Media Creative for this documentary, Chicago at the Crossroad.

ILS Episode 66: Mi Amada Ciudad Murada: The Literary Landscape of Intramuros

Mi Amada Ciudad Murada: The Literary Landscape of Intramuros

With Jeffrey Yap
Intramuros Learning Sessions episode no. 66
03 September 2021

Writers draw inspiration from the places they visit or inhabit. In the case of Nick Joaquin, for instance, his love for Intramuros produced a canon of literary works that feature the Walled City as a subject or a setting. Other writers have also written about Manila from the Spanish Colonial Period up to the present, and these works reflect how the physical and sociocultural landscape of the district transformed over time. As we explore the stories written about our Noble and Ever Loyal City, we will discover how fiction can tell the history of a place—its ups and downs and ever changing fortunes—in surprisingly engaging and perhaps more endearing ways.

Guest Speaker: Jeffrey Yap
Moderator: Rancho Arcilla

---

About the Speaker: Jeffrey Yap

Jeffrey P. Yap is a Supervising Historic Sites Development Officer of the Intramuros Administration. He took up BA Philosophy at San Beda University and M.A. English Studies, major in Creative Writing at the University of the Philippines, Diliman. He has published essays, short stories, and papers with life in Manila as a central theme. He has taught Philippine Literature in English at the Colegio de San Juan de Letran and more recently at Assumption College San Lorenzo where he gives an online lecture on media and literary arts.

Michael Stelzner: The Storytellers Network Season 4 Episode 3

Storytelling with Social Media Marketing World Founder Michael Stelzner

As we explore storytelling in social media, we get to hear from the founder of Social Media Examiner, author of the books Launch and Writing White Papers, and the man behind Social Media Marketing World–the industry’s largest conference. He’s also host of the Social Media Marketing podcast, founder of the Social Media Marketing Society, and the central character in The Journey, an episodic documentary.

Michael Stelzner lives and breathes storytelling and social media. While we explore his story, we dig some interesting nuggets about social media and how it affects storytellers today.

“If you think about this industry of social media and how young it is, it’s just 10 years old… so what you have is a lot of people who, around 2008 when it really started blowing up, were out of work. They started realizing they could make a career out of interacting with people on the internet. That was shocking to them!” - Michael Stelzner on the career jumpstarts in social media

Using new tools to tell a story

Michael discovered something in recent years as he saw entertainment changing. He realized that the story behind Social Media Marketing World and the team that puts it together could be interesting to the public. We like the behind-the-scenes stories of teams and their struggles & successes.

Of course, some stories can’t be told just through a few tweets or Instagram posts. Michael took to the screen for this story. The team recorded their lives for a new internet show, the Journey. For Michael, it’s a new way to stretch himself and reach new people, introducing SMMW to a new audience.

“I was on stage in front of 4200 people and talked about The Journey. I asked how many people watched, and about 1/3 of them raised their hands. That’s proof that something like this actually works.” - Michael Stelzner on the power of The Journey

Social media: Good or Evil?

There’s a push in the world that social media has harmed people, democracy, the legitimacy of a free press and more. With this idea, it’s natural to ask if social media is good or evil. Michael points out a great perspective: just like any object, this tool can be used to highlight good even while some may use it for more nefarious reasons.

Michael’s example is a woman who’s become a subject matter expert in the field of dog walking. Through social media, she’s been able to build her personal brand while connecting with like-minded individuals to build a positive community.

“It’s just that it’s easier for these messages to disseminate. I don’t think they’re evil or good, but I think that … in the end, the most important part is allowing people to gather around common interests.” - Michael Stelzner on the power of community

A Conversation on Writing Native” w/ Craig Johnson, Jane Kirkpatrick, and David Heska Wanbli Weiden

Welcome to Sunriver Books and Music, we are proud to present a Conversation on Writing Native with authors Craig Johnson, Jane Kirkpatrick, and David Heska Wanbli Weiden. Enjoy a live discussion with the authors.

Fiction requires authors to walk in the shoes of others vastly different from themselves. Unless I am sorely mistaken (always a possibility) not any, or at least not many, authors lived in the time of Henry the VII or are space aliens or are zombies (scratch that last example, there are probably days we all feel a bit zombie-ish). Authors take on the formidable task of imagining. How might they experience trying to actually feel what it would be like for Anne Boleyn knowing that in the morning the man who recently shared her bed would cause the executioner’s axe to violently strike her neck ending her life? Hard stuff. Without that deep dive into other ages, cultures, and galaxies we would not have historic fiction, fantasy, science fiction, or mystery novels

An author in writing outside their personal experience has an obligation to be respectful of cultural and accurate in their portrayals of history. This is particularly true with the depiction of Native Americans, they deserve to be treated as fully realized characters, their history accurately portrayed. Words have power, literature has power. That power can be ill-used. What happens when teenagers read inaccurate negative depictions of their culture? Does it shape the way they feel about themselves and their reactions to others?

Hearing how Jane Kirkpatrick, Craig Johnson, and David Heska Wanbli Weiden feel about the topic of Native Americans in literature and respond to it in their writing will be fascinating.
