About Stanley: Stanley (/ˈstænli/; also known as Port Stanley) is the capital city of the Falkland Islands. It is located on the island of East Falkland, on a north-facing slope in one of the wettest parts of the islands. At the 2016 census, the city had a population of 2,460. The entire population of the Falkland Islands was 3,398 on Census Day on 9 October 2016. Stanley is represented by five of the eight elected members of the Legislative Assembly of the Falkland Islands, Stacy Bragger, Barry Elsby, Mark Pollard, Roger Spink and Leona Vidal Roberts. An elected Town Council of Stanley existed from 1948 to 1973. On 14 June 2022, Stanley received letters patent, formally awarding it city status. // The Falkland Islands (/ˈfɔː(l)klənd, ˈfɒlk-/; Spanish: Islas Malvinas ˈizlaz malˈβinas) is an archipelago in the South Atlantic Ocean on the Patagonian Shelf. The principal islands are about 300 mi (480 km) east of South Americas southern Patagonian coast and about 752 mi (1,210 km) from Cape Dubouzet at the northern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula, at a latitude of about 52°S. The archipelago, with an area of 4,700 sq mi (12,000 km2), comprises East Falkland, West Falkland, and 776 smaller islands. As a British overseas territory, the Falklands have internal self-governance, but the United Kingdom takes responsibility for their defence and foreign affairs. The capital and largest settlement is Stanley on East Falkland. Controversy exists over the Falklands discovery and subsequent colonisation by Europeans. At various times the islands have had French, British, Spanish, and Argentine settlements. Britain reasserted its rule in 1833, but Argentina maintains its claim to the islands. In April 1982, Argentine military forces invaded the islands. [Source: wikipedia // Google]

Visiting the Falkland Islands for a Day

I was so happy to notice that my Cruise to Antarctica included a stop at the Falkland Islands. The Falklands War in 1982 was a ten-week undeclared war between Argentina and the United Kingdom over two British dependent territories in the South Atlantic: the Falkland Islands and its territorial dependency, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. While my visit was brief, I learned that it was interesting for many other reasons.

Stanley, Falkland Islands - Walk Through Town - What to Do on Your Day in Port

We take a walk through Stanley, in the Falkland Islands.
We also take a bus out to see the penguins.

This was recorded in March 2023.

Falkland Islands | A Journey to the Bottom of the Earth

Come along on a journey to the bottom of the earth on my two week trip to the Falkland Islands. I assembled this video to show you what I saw and hopefully, I can make you feel, at least a little bit, the way I did when leaving the Falklands.

And for those of you who might not know that much about the Falkland Islands, I also added a real brief history of the islands and a little bit about the Falklands War.

The Falkland Islands are one of those rare places left where you can escape the modern world. Located 300 miles to the east of the bottom tip of South America. Their remote location has left the Falklands a place for one of a kind wildlife encounters.

Of all the places we’ve visited in recent years the Falklands are unlike any of the others – and I think that is was what I grew to love about the Falklands the most.

SOLO CRUISE! Day 2 in Antarctica | Norwegian Star - New Years Day 2024

Welcome back to Mer Cruises Solo! Today is day 11 of 16 on my solo South America and Antarctica cruise on NCL, and it is our second day in Antarctica! It's also NEW YEARS DAY! Today we are seeing all new Antarctic sights; namely Elephant Island where the notorious Shackleton spent several months stranded - and it is not an inhabitable place (unless you're a penguin) although it is beautiful! We see tons of wildlife including many penguins frolicking across the water, and SO MANY whales! Our ship came to a standstill for half an hour or more as pods of whales just surrounded us - it was a sight to see and like nothing I've ever experienced or seen before. What an incredible day. We spend the afternoon cruising slowly around Elephant Bay and then start our trek back through the Drake Passage towards the Falkland Islands. I end the evening with a picture perfect view from my dinner table of the aft of the ship and a delicious meal.

Hey, fellow adventurers! Welcome back to Molu's Vlog! Today, we're journeying to a place where nature remains untamed and wildlife reigns supreme - the Falkland Islands.

Imagine a wind-swept archipelago, where rugged cliffs meet frothy, cobalt waves. These islands, located deep in the South Atlantic Ocean, are a haven for wildlife lovers. Here, the air rings with the raucous calls of over a million penguins, who call the Falklands home, their black and white coats a vivid contrast against the earthy tones of the landscape.

This isn't just a place; it's a scene from a David Attenborough documentary come to life, where elephant seals bask lazily on the shores while dolphins and whales play hide and seek in the surf.

The Falkland Islands are not just about wildlife, though. Step into Stanley's quiet, charming town with its colorful roofs and Victorian architecture, a testament to the islands' British roots. Explore remnants of the 1982 conflict at the local museums, a poignant reminder of the island's turbulent history.

And let's not forget the sweeping grasslands and dramatic skies, painting an alluring backdrop for adventurers like us. This is a place where you can truly escape the buzz of the city and immerse yourself in the raw beauty of nature.

So, buckle up, fellow explorers, as we embark on this exciting journey to the ends of the Earth! Remember, if you're not part of Molu's Vlog family yet, hit that subscribe button and join us as we uncover the world's hidden gems. See you in the Falklands!

One Day In Port - Stanley Falkland Islands

On P&O Aurora - South America Grand Tour 2023

Best Places to Visit in Falkland Islands

Best Places to Visit in Falkland Islands
Covering an area of around 7,500 square kilometers in the southern part of the Atlantic Ocean, the Falkland Islands - Islas Malvinas to the Argentinians - encompass some 778 islands. Despite the fact they're only 483 kilometers off the coast of Argentina and 12,000 kilometers from England, the islands are a British Overseas Territory. The two largest islands in the archipelago, West Falkland and East Falkland, are where you'll find the majority of this tiny country's 3,000 or so residents (most of them of British descent).
Despite its remote location - or perhaps because of it - these cold, hilly islands attract a surprising number of tourists. Served by direct flights from the UK and South America, as well as visited by many cruise ships, the Falklands are perfectly situated to tap into the growing demand for tourists visiting the Antarctic. The Falklands' main attraction is undoubtedly its wildlife; it boasts numerous species of birds and marine mammals, along with a number of great tour options that will get you up close to them. Other popular Falkland Island activities include fishing, trekking, hiking, climbing, kayaking, and mountain biking. Find the best places to visit with our list of the top-rated tourist attractions in the Falkland Islands.

How British Are THE FALKLAND ISLANDS?

Red Telephone Booths? English Speaking? Fish 'n Chips?

That's the Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas) in a nutshell -- THEY ARE SHOCKINGLY BRITISH, more so than anywhere I've been in Great Britain. I cannot tell you how bizarre it is to be 8,000 miles away from the U.K., and feel this strong of a British influence in the small archipelago called the Falkland Islands.

As many of you may know, the history of the Falkland Islands is complicated and bloody... The sovereignty of the islands is part of an ongoing dispute between the U.K. and nearby Argentina, as it was fought out over a brutal 10-week war in 1982, which ultimately led to Argentina surrendering. The conflict still exists today, more than you might imagine.

I made this video to teach you a little about the history of the Falkland Islands, as well as show you some things I've discovered and learned over the last 3 days I spent here with Hurtigruten. Have I mentioned that the nature and wildlife in the Falkland Islands is breathtaking?!

Just out of curiosity -- did you already know about the British influence of the Falkland Islands? Or is this all news to you?
