Traveling Japan with only an instant translator | ili

Explored Asakusa, Tokyo with ili, an instant translator!
Was a very interesting and fun experience testing it out in real life travel situations :D
The one I used here was English to Japanese, however there are many other languages so check out their website for more information!

Many of you ask me if it's okay to travel to Japan even though you speak no Japanese and the simple answer is YES! With basic English and gestures you can get around Japan, however for those of you still worried about the language barrier than try out ili when you're travelling next time :)

My itinerary for this video:

Asakusa, Tokyo
- Kimono rental @Vasara
- Asakusa street food along and around Nakamise Street
- Asakusa temple @Sensōji, also known as Asakusa Kannon Temple
- Back streets of Asakusa @Hoppy Street
- Asakusa rickshaw ride

Walking from Tokyo to Kyoto w/ ili Translator

I was curious to see how Japanese people would react if I asked them for directions from Tokyo to Kyoto by foot. So I decided to test out ili as well and see how it would go. The Japanese people were all very kind and truly tried to show me where Kyoto was. I’m especially thankful for Masa, who really went out of his way to help me.

Quick Trip to Sendai w/ ili Translator

Sendai has been the furthest north that I’ve been to in Japan. I was curious of how it would be, as not many travelers actually travel to the Tohoku region, which is north of Japan, and the closest region to Hokkaido. In my short time there, I quickly realized that I was the only Westerner there. Even when I went to the Travel Service Center, I didn’t see any Westerners, so that was a bit different.

I found the Japanese people in Sendai to be just as kind and respectful as the many Japanese people I’ve encountered in Tokyo. I was just surprised by the Japanese man who went out of his way to help me get to Jozenji (the City of Tress) in Sendai. I found Jozenji to be incredible. I could only imagine how it would look like during the spring season.

Before going to Tokyo, I had to make a stop over at Utsunomiya and have my last set of pan-fried dumplings at MinMin. The absolute highlight? Running to catch the Shinkansen to Tokyo! (Duration 5:24)

My Experience using the ili Translator [Review]

After testing out the ili translator and doing 12 videos that showcased my experience with ili, I’ve come to enjoy using it. Do keep in mind, ili is a great product, but not a perfect one. She will translate most traveled related terms accurately, but there are times when she won’t, so don’t expect perfection here. The biggest advantage to ili is that there’s no Wi-Fi needed and the translations are instant.

But the main question: would I recommend ili and should you get it? In the most simplest way, here’s how to answer that question:

If you don’t know any Japanese, don’t like playing charades/butchering the language, and just want to focus on having a streamlined communication experience, then that’s easy. You’ll enjoy ili.

If you know basic Japanese or find the language barrier to be fun/challenging, then you may not find ili as a good fit for you. Hopefully, the video experiences using ili has been helpful and valuable to you.

My Work:

Reviewing the ili Translator

During my recent trip to Japan in January, I worked on a long video project that lasted more than a week. I was specifically testing out Logbar ili translation device called ili. The device is meant for travel related purposes and can translate English into Japanese, Chinese, and Spanish. It can only translate English to one of those three languages and isn’t meant to be used for 2-way conversation.

Lobar was looking for someone to vlog their experience in Japan using ili and I was interested in testing it out and advancing my filmmaking skills. Thus, the 13-video project began. Over the next 13 days, you'll see how the device actually works in real life situations and can decide if it's worth obtaining during your travels. This is the first video, which introduces the ili translator.

My Work:

Testing out the ili Translator w/ a Japanese Local

During my time testing out ili, I was unable to confirm if all the translations were accurate since I don’t speak Japanese fluently. Thus, the reason why all my videos with ili include a “Attempting to Ask” text when ili translates. So I decided to contact my Japanese friend, Eri, and test ili with her to see how accurate the translations are.

Travel Kyoto & Nishiki Market w/ ili Translator [Day 1]

If you’re visiting Japan, then Kyoto is definitely a must place to visit! It was fun using ili in Nishiki Market, especially when I met the couple from the U.K. (duration 1:58). By far, the best moment was the street performer, Juuichi (duration 3:44), just singing her heart out on the streets of Kyoto. She was absolutely amazing. Oh, and I can’t forget to mention the geisha I saw at the Gion district. Even though it was for a brief moment, it was worth seeing.

Travel Kyoto, Inari Shine, & Gion Corner w/ ili Translator [Day 2]

My second day in Kyoto was def packed. You can’t go to Kyoto without visiting Inari Shrine, it’s just magnificent to see the Tori Gates. But, let’s answer the most important question: how do you see a geisha in Kyoto? Here’s the answer: If you got to the Gion Corner, they offer Japanese traditional performing arts, which includes a Kyo-mai performance by Maiko.

Now, maiko’s are an apprentice geisha, but they look pretty much identical. Personally, I can’t tell the difference between the two. So a traditional performance by a maiko/geisha is fine with me. As of when this video was recorded (Jan 2018), the performance time begins everyday from 6:00pm to 7:00pm and cost 2,500 JPY for foreign visitors. I can’t recommend I enough!
