Monteverde cloud forest is found at an altitude range of 4,000 to 6220 feet above sea level.

Temperatures range from the 50s to the 70s with an average temperature around 64°F.

There is also always a strong wind and a chill in the air so if you brought a long sleeve shirt or sweater and long pants you will want to wear them while you’re visiting this area. The wise advice to layer your clothing is especially good advice here as you will probably be doing lots of trekking so once you build up a sweat you can peel down a layer or two until you are comfortable again.

Better than La Fortuna? Monteverde - Essential Costa Rica Travel Guide

Welcome (and welcome back) to our 4th installment of our Costa Rica Adventures. This time we forgo the trip to La Fortuna (which is an amazing portion of the rainforest and one of the most well-known in Costa Rica) and head to Monteverde. Now when we look at Monteverde, what we are looking at is a combination of the actual town of Monteverde and also the town of Santa Elena which sit adjacent to one another.

However, we will refer to the region as Monteverde. Monteverde hosts 3 separate cloud forests: the Monteverde Cloud Forest, the Children's Eternal Rain Forest, and the Santa Elena Rainforest. The Children's Eternal Rainforest is vast, so vast that it stretches back to La Fortuna. You can technically walk there, would not recommend it.

Outside of their plentiful cloud forests, one very notable thing about Monteverde Costa Rica vs say La Fortuna Costa Rica is the weather. Cooler than many parts of Costa Rica, Monteverde has a climate that could require a jacket at times and even... dare I say a space heater.

Outside of the ever-green region, the delightful local food and very pleasant hospitality... we very much enjoyed our Airbnb:

Monteverde Airbnb:

Catarata Los Murcielagos/Catarata Waterfalls -

El Tigre Waterfalls -

One VERY important note about getting to Monteverde Costa from San Jose Costa Rica or even Guanacaste Costa Rica... while they highly recommend a 4x4 we would say it's almost required. We did get by with a 2x4 (and be careful of listings because that's a 2 wheel drive) but potholes, lack of roads, terrible condition roads and rain made that 2x4 far less than desirable.

This was one stark difference between La Fortuna Costa Rica and Monte Verde, the roads to La Fortuna from San Jose Costa Rica were far more maintained. However don't let that deter you from heading to Monteverde Costa Rica, especially if you're planning a trip to La Fortuna.

A Fairytale? Monteverde Cloud Forest - Essential Costa Rica Travel Guide

Welcome (and welcome back) to our 5th installment of our Costa Rica Adventures. This time we forgo the trip to La Fortuna (which is a fantastic portion of the rainforest and one of the most well-known in Costa Rica) and head to Monteverde.

However, through our travels, the Santa Elena Cloud forest is one of the most serene and beautiful places we've been. It retains an ethereal quality that is rarely found in many parts of the world. We see so many videos and posts about La Fortuna which is beautiful and excellent but if we had to choose a destination again, it might be Monteverde and the Santa Elena Cloud forest.

What to Do in Monteverde, Costa Rica | Travel Guide ????

WHAT TO DO:
Monteverde is one of the beautiful parts of Costa Rica. Only a three to four hour drive from San Jose, Monteverde is known as the “jewel in the crown of cloud forest reserves.” If you only have one weekend to spend in Montevede, try to spend a full day in Selvatura Adventure Park. It is recommended to see the hummingbirds, tour around the famous hanging bridges, and then zip-line around the rainforest. Tip: the tarzan and superman rides are optional, but you should definitely try them out! The second day can be spent by going to Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve or exploring downtown Monteverde.

WHERE TO STAY:
Casa Batsu:
This charming AirBnb is owned by a Costa Rican family - Carlos, Paula and their two children Tiago and Daniel. Our host Carlos is friendly, patient, and knowledgeable. The rooms are comfortable, but the shared communal space is definitely the main attraction. Whats not to love about stained glass windows, a beautiful garden, and daily gourmet breakfasts?

WHAT TO EAT:
Here are some of the restaurants that we really enjoyed:

- Restaurante Celajes at Hotel Belmar
- Rancho Lelo
- Tree House Restaurant and Cafe

Monteverde Costa Rica Travel Guide - Travel Excellence

The town of Monteverde, up in the mountains, overlooks the Gulf of Nicoya in the province of Puntarenas, Costa Rica. Its lush green scenery, cool weather, history and biodiversity all make it a must-visit destination as part of your itinerary when vacationing in Costa Rica.

The arrival of Quakers from the United States decades ago, the local farmers and its unique biodiversity have made it what it is today. The famous Monteverde cheese factory, and the arrival of immigrants from different countries have developed a varied range of restaurants, from pizzerias to Argentinean steakhouses and artisan chocolatiers.

Biologists, birdwatchers and nature lovers wanting to learn about its biodiversity mingle with tourists looking for a break from the warm coasts and Costa Ricans admiring one of their most important protected areas.

The first free thing to do is the ficus tree bridge, very close to downtown Santa Elena with the entrance by the Hotel Felix Room. Youll walk down to a river and right there is an amazing natural ficus root bridge. You can climb up the bridge and it{s a very photogenic and unique spot.

The second free thing to do in Monteverde is the Cerro Plano lookout point. Its right off the main road in front of the CPI Spanish School and is a great place to watch the sunset or enjoy the view of the Gulf of Nicoya.

The third spot is at the Monteverde Volcano Lodge and you'll need a car for this one. They have an incredible view of Arenal Volcano and Lake Arenal, one of the best in the area. You can come up here to take some beautiful photos and videos and they also have a restaurant open to the public if you want to grab a bite to eat with this breathtaking view.

The fourth spot is the hollow ficus tree. This tree is actually completely hollow and is big enough for a person to climb up to the top. The hollowed out tree root system provides easy to find handles and grips and if you make it to the top, you'll be rewarded with a beautiful view of the valley below.

The last free thing to do in Monteverde is the San Luis lookout point. This is another amazing viewpoint that is on the way to the town of San Luis. You can see the surrounding mountains, cloud forest, a waterfall and the Gulf of Nicoya. It's another excellent spot to watch the sunset.
