Zagreb to Split Train

Part 2 of our journey between Germany and Italy by train.

A day train from Zagreb to Split in Croatia. We used the excellent information on the Man at Seat Sixty One website when we planned the trip. The tickets cost €32 Euro each (£27 GBP) The trip was scheduled to take six and a half hours but it ended up about 90 minutes late. When we got on the train at Zagreb the conductor tried to explain that we would have to alight in the mountains and use a bus service between station as there were track works further down the line (the message was lost in translation but we soon found out what she meant!). The bus took about 60 minutes and then we boarded another train for the final part of the journey to Split.

BUDAPEST to SPLIT, CROATIA IN 1 DAY - Stunning train journey!

We went from Budapest to Split in one day using both bus (Flixbus) and train (using our Interrail pass) The bus time was 5 hours from Budapest to Zagreb and then we took a 6 hour train ride from Zagreb to Split. It was a long day of travel but we managed to see a tiny bit of Zagreb and train journey through the Croatian mountains was the one of the most beautiful train rides we have been on!

To book a reservation on a high speed train, Interrail require 8 working days and a printed ticket. We managed to reserve a seat for a high speed train the day before on this website -

Just make sure that you only buy your reservation and not a ticket if you already have a Interrail/eurail pass.

Journey compilation: Euro night train 820 from Split, Croatia to Zagreb, Croatia

While train travel is widespread in Europe, overnight sleeper trains are still a bit of a novelty. With people preferring buses and flights most of the time, sleeper train travel is restricted to a few international European routes and, in rare cases, within the same country. This is one of the very few remaining sleeper train journeys I made between two of Croatia's biggest cities: Split and Zagreb. The approximately 400km. journey is covered in 8 hours. Quite slow, but very quaint and comfortable. Travelling in old sleeper trains provide a unique experience in itself and not to mention the practical benefits such as saving money on hotels and more available time for sightseeing! #HZ #Railfanning #Railfan #HZPP #Sleepertrain #Euronight #Croatianrailways#Split #Zagreb #Croatian #Schlafwagen#EN #Hrvatskeželjeznice
