AVOID These Scams In Istanbul ????????
With peak travel season coming to Istanbul and Turkey, make sure you avoid these scams in Istanbul to keep you safe and protect your money. The lemon street vendor tried to cheat his way more than once into fooling me into buying more items than I originally wanted. Showing he only has big bills and no small change is an easy way street scammers in Istanbul try to cheat you into buying more items than you originally want. Also big hotels such as this Crown plaza IHG are doing false advertisement. Hotels should inform their guest that certain facilities are not working before booking. Most big chain hotels I checked in Turkey warn you on their website that their Hamman and gym is closed which is why I didn't stay with them and chose this hotel which I thought had everything up and running but apparently not. This is false advertisement at its finest and management didn't even care at all when I talked to them about the issue. Istanbul is a great place to visit, rich in food and culture however, keep your eyes open and stay alert to avoid silly scams in Istanbul.

When visiting a mosque, you shouldn't leave your shoes at the entrance. They could be stolen or someone could take them by mistake. Always have a very light plastic bag in your pocket.
0:51 - *CHECK EVERY TIME THE PRICELIST*
To avoid paying more than the expected price, always check the price list or menu prices before ordering.
In tourist areas prices tend to be overly priced and this could cause some problems when it comes to paying the restaurant bill.
Sometimes they’ll bring appetizers.
Ask if they are included in the menu or not.
If you don’t ask, they’ll charge you extra money for that.
For this, don’t eat close to touristic places.
Go a bit farther from the sights and you will find really nice and cheap places to eat.
1:31 - *DON’T EAT FROM STREET*
Don’t eat food from street stands or kiosks selling meat in sandwiches etc. it may not be healthy or hygienically prepared.
Also, don’t buy or eat food such as simit rings and other bakery products from street sellers as they are often hard and are not sold in hygienic conditions.
1:52 - *DON’T BUY PERFUME, CLOTHES, SHOES, BAGS ETC. FROM STREET SELLERS*
They are mostly smuggled or not genuine.
2:07 - *ISTANBUL CITY CARD*
One of the easiest and cheapest methods of travelling around Istanbul by public transport (bus, ferry, tram...) is to get an Istanbul Card. You can get it and put credit on it from the machines. When you enter a bus, tram or ferry you just simply run it across the machine by the driver and it automatically devaluates the card for the price of a bus ride.
*** Important announcement ***
Now you can use public transportation vehicles without Istanbulkart or Istanbul City Card, only with your contactless credit card. Of course, Istanbulkart or Istanbul City Card is cheaper. But it is also a great advantage to be able to use the contactless credit card when those cards are not available.
2:42 - *DO NOT APPROACH THE FISHERMEN*
Fishing hooks and weights have even caused serious injuries to some people, due to careless fishermen.
3:07 - *AVOID TAKING TAXIS*
Avoid taking taxis as much as possible. There are a lot of tourists who scammed and attacked by taxi drivers. Use public transport vehicles.
3:27 - *IF YOU NEED A TAXI*
If you need to take a taxi, be very careful. Insist that the taximeter must be started. They’ll not start it to get much more money.
Check the route with Google maps. They will try to take you by a very long route.
In an emergency call 112.
Be very careful when giving and getting your money back. They can try to trick you with very quick acting while giving you your change.
4:00 - *HIRE AN ELECTRIC SCOOTER*
Instead of taking taxis you can hire electric scooters.
Please be careful on wet roads and avoid high speed.
4:53 - *NIGHT CLUB SCAM*
It happens mostly in Taksim area, especially at Istiklal Avenue. Some people are approaching especially solo male travellers and try to start a conversation. After a conversation they invite you to drink a beer. After getting your trust they invite you to go to a night club or bar. Then after a while maybe nice women will join you. Then they slowly disappear and you’ll be there alone. The real surprise of the night is to get bill with hundreds or thousands of USD. If you’ll not pay they’ll force you and put you in a very dangerous situation.
For this, avoid talking to strangers, don’t accept their fake friendship requests, keep going. Be very very careful in clubs.
5:45 - *DON'T GO TO DESOLATE, SECLUDED PLACES*
Avoid going to such places.
6:14 - *IN EMERGENCY CALL 112*
In emergency situations call 112 directly (without the international code for Turkey +90) on your mobile phone 7/24. There is always someone available who can speak foreign languages. They can redirect you to other services (police, ambulance...).

How to avoid tourist scams when you travel
Many countries have their particular set of scam artists and touts, which focus on tourists. Scam artists and touts can come in all shapes and sizes. Never underestimate the elderly or children. Also, there are many different levels of scams. The majority of them are swindlers, looking to part you from your money. But enter questionable or secluded areas alone with a scam artist and you could widen the potential of that crime. In extreme or desperate cases, the crime can turn towards violence, like in the case of Sarai Sierra, who was found dead in Turkey.
Do research in advance. Read your guidebook for tips on common tourist scams for the country you're traveling to. Research alone will help greatly. The rest is up to you and how much of a street smart traveler you can be.

How to Deal with Travel Scams
If you haven't checked out my travel safety tips, please do so and keep in mind... while our naivete of a foreign culture may not help us avoid getting into a scam, we can avoid going deeper. In my video How to Deal with Travel Scams, I only gave one example of a scam I commonly found in my travels as well as, a few personal examples and how I deal with them. The ones I've just shared above with you are off-video.
1. Extract yourself ASAP. (Start thinking of how you're going to get away)
2. Be Firm
3. Never go into dark or secluded areas where people can't see you or hear you scream.
4. If you do go into those places, excuse yourself. Think of an excuse to leave immediately~
5. Scan your environment to see who might be able to help.
