Exploring Japan's Lost Heritage on Sakhalin - Russia's Largest Island

Welcome to a fascinating journey to Sakhalin, the largest island in Russia, once known as Karafuto ( 樺太庁) during its Japanese colonial era. Join me as I delve into the captivating tapestry of this island's unique heritage, intertwining Japanese and Russian influences that have shaped its history, culture, and landscapes.

My exploration begins with a thrilling excursion into the remnants of the island's rich industrial past. I'll take you along the abandoned railway lines that were once the lifelines of Sakhalin's economic growth, transporting coal, timber, and dreams of prosperity across vast terrains.

Step back in time as we wander through the echoes of Sakhalin's history. Ruins of ancient Japanese temples and sanctuaries stand testament to the island's rich cultural heritage. We'll delve into the tales of the past, learning how the blend of traditions has shaped Sakhalin's identity.

As we journey deeper, we'll unveil the abandoned industrial facilities that once thrived on this rugged land.

Sakhalin's allure goes beyond its historical and industrial aspects. We'll immerse ourselves in its breathtaking natural beauty – from deep bushes and incredible waterfalls to vast bays and rugged coastlines.

My expedition to explore Sakhalin's Japanese heritage promises to be an unforgettable experience, unraveling the captivating tales of two cultures intertwining on this vast canvas. The longest ride in a Truck | Hitchhiking in USA

This is the 20th video of my 'American trip - 2018' where I tried to check how easy is hitchhiking in USA! In this video you will see me starting the trip from Alabama and reaching Texas in just one ride. This was the longest ever ride I had in the US. Thanks to Jovani, a Cuban-American trucker for the lift. It took almost a day to reach the truck stop in Terrell, the final point in the Texas. Watch this video to know about the camping grounds for RVs in America, to see the landscapes of Alabama, Mississippi & Texas, to see how are the truck stops in these areas and to see how is Interstate 20, i.e. i-20!

GEORGIA’S MOST DANGEROUS ROAD ????????

In this video we will take you to Tusheti National Park which is only accessible by helicopter or by hitchhiking a 4x4 vehicle on what is considered one of the most dangerous roads in the world and the by far deadliest in Georgia. Many people told us not to go there or at least take a guide, but hitchhiking there turned out to be the most amazing experience and finally big adventure again after a relaxing week with amazing Couchsurfing hosts and friends in Tbilisi. If you’ve got any questions about how and when to hitchhike to Omalo, Tusheti, make sure to let us know in the comments:)
Next up we will go on a multi-day hike in Svaneti region which was to become our highlight of Georgia and a definite recommendation to every low-budget traveller visiting the Caucasus!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Welcome to our Hitchhiking Diary everybody! Thanks for stopping by our channel.

Therefore we can avoid most of the costs that make travelling expensive.
Our content ranges from crazy adventure travel vlogs, valuable travel advice on how to move around safely and cheaply, some interviews of interesting people that we meet on the road, to videos of us just enjoying this beautiful planet and being thankful for every day we can spend on it.

Stranded In Russia's Creepiest Village

???????? People often ask how I get around Russia, well often I hitchhike from town to town. Sometimes it goes well, sometimes it doesn't, and sometimes I discover a weird place I'd rather not be in...

TRANS-SIBERIAN JOURNEY ON A BUDGET! (From Europe to Asia)

We are leaving Kazan and we are continuing are journey on the Trans-Siberian Railway through the cities of Perm, Kungur, Ekaterinburg, Tyumen, Omsk and Novosibirsk!
We had the chance to visit the huge Kungur Caves, see our local friends in Tyumen, visit the incredible churches and visit the capital of Siberia: Novosibirsk.
As we decided to move to Russia, we chose to board the transsiberian from Moscow and visit as many cities as possible before we decide in which city we will settle down.
We will share all of our adventures throughout our videos.

Stalin's failed GULAG: The Trans-Polar Railway (Construction No. 501)

The Trans-Polar is also referred to variously as Dead Road, and Stalinbahn, is an incomplete railway in Northern Siberia. The railway was a project of the Soviet Gulag system that took place from 1947 until Stalin's death in 1953. Construction was coordinated via two separate Gulag projects, the 501 Railroad beginning on the River Ob and 503 Railroad beginning on the River Yenisey, part of a grand design of Joseph Stalin to span a railroad across northern Siberia to reach the Soviet Union's easternmost territories.

The purpose of the railway was threefold: to facilitate the export of nickel from neighboring Norilsk; to provide work for thousands of post-war prisoners; to connect the deep-water seaports of Igarka and Salekhard with the western Russian railway network. With the Soviet industry relocated to western Siberia during World War II, it was seen as a strategic advantage to use the northward-flowing river systems to deliver supplies to Arctic Ocean ports. Salekhard was on the Ob River, downstream from Novosibirsk and Omsk, and Igarka was on the Yenisei. Connecting these two rivers was beneficial for transferring goods between cities and regions.

A rebuilt section of the railway between Nadym and Novy Urengoy on the east bank of the Nadym River is still in operation, as is the extreme western section connecting Labytnangi and the railway to Vorkuta. The section from Salekhard to Nadym is planned to be rebuilt, including a new bridge over the Ob to connect Salekhard to the rest of the Russian railway system via Labytnangi.

Me and my friend Kenji hitchhiked along the Trans-Polar Railway and explored some of the abandoned labor camps located next to the railway. We started out our journey in Novyy Urengoy and finished it in Salekhard. Along our way, we visited 2 forced labor camps of GULAG.

Enjoy!
