The BEST place in the WORLD to swim with whales? Ha'apai, Tonga!!
THE best place on the world to swim with humpback whales... Ha'apai, Tonga!! Mind blowing! After 30 years of travel, definitely one of the most amazing things we've done in our lives! We visited Ha'apai for 8 days in August 2019.
We had to book 2 years in advance. It took two and a half days to get there (from europe). And we had the highest of expectations... but within 30 minutes of our first day swimming with whales in Tonga, our expectations were met. (August 2019)
The whales: the mums are 40 tonnes. And they are super-chilled.
The calves are born 5-7 tonnes (!) and are clumsy, curious and playful.
They spend 3 months in Tonga--as the mothers give birth and prepare their babies for the swim back to the Antarctica.
Ha'apai is a part of an extremely remote group of Tongan islands in the Pacific ocean, near Fiji, where you get a truly unique experience.
The governmental rules in Tonga help protect the whales: maximum of 90 minutes, and maximum of 4 people plus a guide, swimming with these Humpback whales. The whales must then be left alone for at least another 90 minutes before any other interactions. The whales swim guides are protective and considerate of the whales.
Tonga is basic and authentic. (And it has to be said, not cheap) The islands are idyllic.

Ha'apai is 45 minute by plane from the main island of Tonga, Nuku'alofa.
