TOP Things to do in Guatemala City ????????

In this travel vlog, we spent 48 hours in Guatemala City. Most tourists who visit Guatemala choose to skip Guatemala City and make their way directly to Antigua, Guatemala. Most tourists skip Guatemala city because of stereotypes about how dangerous it is. While parts of the city are indeed dangerous, doing some research and staying in the safer neighborhoods makes this city worth visiting.
On day 1, we visited the national palace of culture to understand the history of the country a bit better. This palace is actively used by the country's president and is really worth visiting given that a guided tour costs only $7. We also visited Guatemala City's best mall - Oakland Mall which is better than any mall I have seen in Canada.
On day 2, we visited the La Aurora zoo and the Esquilandia amusement park. The amusement park was old and a bit small but it had it's own charm given that we were one of the few people there and had all the rides to ourselves.
On day 3, we visited the Central Market of Guatemala which was an amazing place to try the local food and see the day to day life. We found the market in Guatemala city to be very different from the markets in Colombia.

What to do in LAKE ATITLAN Off the Beaten Path | JAIBALITO HIKE | Guatemala Top Things to Do and See

What to do in Lake Atitlan Off the Beaten Path? In our travel Guatemala series: Lake Atitlan Guatemala Top Things to Do and See, you find everything you need to know about Jaibalito and how to travel Guatemala 2020, what to do in Guatemala Lake Atitlan and all the beautiful places you should visit around this Guatemala volcano lake.

Expect amazing views of this stunning Guatemala lake and the volcanoes! Lago Atitlan is renowned as one of the most beautiful lakes in the world. If you ask yourself if you should go to Guatemala our answer is YES! Our Guatemala Travel Vlog series show you where to go in Guatemala.

Join us on the most beautiful Guatemala hike of Lake Atitlan. We start in Jaibalito Lake Atitlan, a cute and colourful village. We hike from Jaibalito to Santa Cruz La Laguna, another Mayan village at Lago de Atitlan Guatemala.

We are spending more than a month on beautiful Lake Atitlan Guatemala.
It is the deepest lake in Central America and it is situated around 1500 m above sea level. It lies in a caldera, formed by a volcano eruption around 84000 years ago. Lake Atitlan is surrounded by three majestic volcanoes.

During our time here we are exploring many of the Mayan villages dotted around the lake, for example Santiago Atitlan, San Pedro La Laguna, Santa Catarina Palopo, San Juan La Laguna, Panajachel and San Marcos La Laguna.

As our Airbnb between San Juan La Laguna and San Pedro La Laguna we walk to the port of San Pedro where we take the public lancha to reach Jaibalito Guatemala. The lancha makes a stop in San Marcos La Laguna on the way to Jaibalito.

Jaibalito is the smallest and most remote of the #lakeatitlan villages and also the least developed. The view of the volcanoes from the dock in Jaibalito is gorgeous! It is only accessible by boat or on foot. There are many colourful murals in Jaibalito. We eat at the little local Guatemalan restaurant Cafe El Escondido, also called Restaurante El Escondido.

Don't miss this Lake Atitlan hike. The walk from Jaibalito to Santa Cruz La Laguna is lovely! The view over the lake and Volcano San Pedro, Volcano Tolimán and Volcano Atitlán is stunning!

After an hour hike we reach Santa Cruz La Laguna. You have a panorama Guatemala volcano view.

In the next episode we will show you Santa Cruz La Laguna Lake Atitlan.

The absolute 5 top places of Guatemala

I would like to share with you the top 5 places in Guatemala to visit if you only have 2 weeks. I have spent so far 6 months in Guatemala, exploring it to the fullest.

After your arrival in the Capital City of Guatemala take a bus straight to Antigua (the normal chicken buses run till about 6pm. but you might not want to wait till the last one:).

Antigua is a brilliant vibrant city. It might be a bit touristy and overprices, yes… But! It is still worth it. I encourage you to also travel off season, like me. That has many more advantages than disadvantages.

If you are into hiking, I would recommend climbing up the Acatenango volcano, with the view over Fuego. Fuego is one of the 3 active volcanoes in Guatemala (the others being Santiaguito (2,550 meters - 8,366 ft) close to Xela, and Pacaya (2,552 metres - 8,373 ft) close to Antigua). It has a big, devastating eruption (very sad for all of us, since many people lost their lives:( )on the 3rd of June 2018. Since then the eruption pattern changed. The footage of Fuego in the video was taken by me, just 2 weeks before the big eruption. And I know that it doesn’t look like this any more. It is still a great hike, but I just want you to manage your expectations accordingly.

How exactly to organize an Acatenango tour:

And all the Fuego eruptions you can see in the following one:

And to go to Pacaya in the early morning. And since you have to go there with a guide anyway, well… I paid 60 quetzales for the Pacaya tour (with transport and guide).

From Antigua, go to the Atitlan Lake. On the Atitlan Lake there are 13 villages that have a direct access to the lake. Plenty of information about the Atitlan villages, as well as the 5 day hike around the Atitlan Lake you can find under the following link - and see the description under each of the videos:

From Atitlan Lake you should go to Semuc Champey. It is a very tiring journey so you definitively should rest before! For this stretch - take the shuttle!

In Semuc Champey and around the Lanquin area there are plenty of hiking options. But what you should not miss out on, is of course - the waterfalls and pools of Semuc Champey. The entrance is 50 quetzales for foreigners.
I would probably stay close to Semuc Champey (and not in Lanquin), so that you can go early in the morning and avoid the crowds. When I arrived there around 8.00 am there were not many people around and I was able to enjoy it much more than when all the tour groups arrived. Ahh, and in Semuc Champey it rains a lot.

So - go early, hike up to the Mirador, then go down to the pools.

Take a padlock with you, so that you can safely lock your belongings when you will be splashing and swimming in the pools. While choosing where you put your stuff, make sure you chose the locker which is undamaged!

You can visit the Kanba caves on the same day. the last guided visit is at 3pm. It costs 60 quetzales and is well worth it! You have to go with the guide, and actually for this type of situations, I do fully agree it is organized this way.

After the cave experience, go for tubing - that is just 10 quetzales more. You won’t be that long on the tube, but in my opinion, that is long enough for the experience.

After Semuc Champey go to Flores. Flores is an island in the Peten state, close to the Tikal ruins. I think you might want to stay there the afternoon you arrived from Semuc, walk around the island, try some food on the bridge food stalls (las Mesitas) - 3 tostadas or mini portions of salads for 5 quetzales. Enjoy the spectacular sunset and go to the other side of the lake - San Miguel to the lookout point. Also, you can use the afternoon to plan your tour to Tikal. I personally would do it with a tour. So, for the morning tour with a guide you can pay 70 quetzales, 60 without the guide. The local transport in the morning to and from Tikal will cost you at least 40, plus a transport to the Santa Elena bus terminal if you don’t want to walk at 5 am in the morning… So - in this case - the option with the guide is a good one, cause you will get the basic understating from the area and s/he is going to accompany you till 10-11am. And after that - you can just walk around the ruins by yourself. Till the last transport (which tends to be around 4-5pm). Which is great.

If you can stay more time in the area, I would go to el Remate. It is a much less popular and has much more beautiful surrounding than Flores, is closer to nature (plenty of howling monkeys there).

If you have any questions, let me know in the comments below. I am always very happy to answer any of your doubts. Cause I want you to have a fabulous time, even if you are very limited time in Guatemala!

Guatemala is the Mayan heart of Central America. There are dozens of historical sites to explore in this country, but there are other charms here as well, such as the colonial city of Antigua, the lively market of Chichicastenango, the incredible ancient ruins of Tikal, and many awesome volcanoes and lakes. All that plus dense jungles, colonial cities, and relatively inexpensive food makes Guatemala one of the best places in the region. This travel guide can help plan your trip there and avoid the hordes of tourist who are slowly discovering this inexpensive and wonderful country.

Top 5 Things to See and Do in Guatemala

1. Take in Lake Atitlán
This lake is framed by three volcanoes and offers arguably the best spot to watch the sunset in Guatemala. On the northern coast of the lake lies the tourist village of Panajachel, a good base to arrange lake and volcanoes tours as well as to enjoy the many restaurants, bars, and nightlife in a beautiful lakeside setting.

2. Head to Antigua
This picturesque colonial city sits in a highland valley between three volcanoes and is full of characteristic colonial Spanish architecture, from its cobbled streets, churches, and houses, to its ruins, and parks. Head to the Plaza Mayor (central square) to take in its amazing gardens, palaces, and cathedral.

3. Stroll Tikal National Park
Guatemala’s most famous cultural attraction. I loved these ruins — they made me feel like Indiana Jones. Come early and stay late as the park empties out in the afternoon when the tour groups leave, and you can have the place all to yourself. I also recommend sleeping over in the park to catch the sunrise. Admission is 150 GTQ.

4. Visit Semuc Champey
Semuc Champey consists of a 1,000-foot long limestone bridge over the Cahabòn River. Take a candlelit tour through the Kamba caves, go tubing down the Cahabòn, or swim in the turquoise pools along the bridge. FYI, the caves are privately owned and can only be visited with a guide. Most tour operators have day trips to both sites for 150-225 GTQ.

5. Chichicastenango Market
Most people who come to Guatemala visit Chichicastenango — the largest native market in North America. Every Thursday and Sunday is market day in “Chichi” when thousands of Quiche Mayans come to town to buy and sell handicrafts, flowers, poetry, trinkets, and textiles.
