Cape Verde is a tropical paradise off the coast of Africa. The islands are popular holiday destinations for Europeans and therefore also for the Dutch. What is there to do? For example, I often heard that Cape Verde would not have much to offer. Nothing is less true. Watch the video and see for yourself that Cape Verde has much more to offer than a few beaches and coves. In this episode you see the island of Sal with the cozy town of Santa Maria, the capital Espargos, the wonderful Olho Azul, the Salinas, Kite Surf Beach and Shark Bay, where the sharks swim between your legs!
This year we travel all over the world and after the Canary Islands and Oman Cape Verde is our third destination. In this episode we start on the island of Sal and the next episode we also visit the island of Boa Vista.

Santa Maria is a town in Cape Verde, on the southern tip of Sal Island. Its long, wide beaches are backed by resorts. Auch fanden wir kleine Babyschildkröten welche wir bis zum Meer begleiten konnten. Die Meeresschildkröten werden in Sal gut beschützt, dennoch gibt es immer noch Wilderer auf der Insel Sal welche jagt auf die Schildkröten machen. Auch weitere Feinde auf der Insel Sal wie Hunde, Krabben und Vögel beschweren die Geburt der Meeresschildkröte. Nur 1 von 1´000 Babyschildkröten überlebt. Jedoch sind die Schildkröten wichtig für das Gleichgewicht im Meer.
Neben den Limonen Haifischen und den unechten Karettschildkröten gibt es auch noch die Salinen zu besichtigen auf der Insel Sal. Diese dienen zur Salzherstellung und gibt der Insel den Namen Sal. In der Salinen kann man baden wie im Roten Meer. Aufgrund des hohen Salzgehaltes geht man in den Salinen in Sal im Wasser nicht unter und kann schweben. Die Kap Verde Insel Sal galt als wichtiger globaler Salzproduzent. Heute wurden die Salinen privatisiert und wird den Touristen zugänglich gemacht auf der Insel Sal in den Kap Verden. Ein tolles Erlebnis in diesem warme Salzwasser zu schweben.

The island of Sal in Cape Verde is not your typical sun holiday destination but you'll soon fall in love with the beautiful beaches and friendly people ????
Cape Verde is not the first place that comes to mind when you think of a sun holiday but that's what makes it so special. It's just off the coast of West Africa. The nearest European country is Spain, with the Canary Islands not too far away.
We went to Sal, or Ilha do Sal, for some Winter sun, visiting in January. It was an ideal break and the weather was fantastic. We flew via Lisbon.
Cape Verde is one of those places people don't know much about. It's made up of 10 islands, gained its independence from Portugal in 1975 and the people still speak Portuguese. They call it Cabo Verde.
The 2 most popular islands for tourists are Sal and Boa Vista. There's direct flights to Sal International Airport from a lot of European countries, especially Portugal. Charter flights to the island are on the increase because of the number of hotels and resorts being built. @tuiukholidays have lots of great package holidays to Sal Island.
Sal is a paradise for adventure sports enthusiasts. It has some of the world's most popular kitesurfing and kiteboarding beaches. We saw lots of people surfing, quad biking and scuba diving too.
Santa Maria is the main tourist town on Sal Island. Santa Maria Beach is beautiful. I really loved it there which is why it shows up in the video so much! There's already lots of hotels along the beach with more being built all the time. Chains like Riu, Hilton and Meliá have already built hotels and apartments on the beach.
We stayed in the Aguahotels Sal Vila Verde and couldn't fault it. It was handy for exploring and close to the Viviero Botanical Gardens. It was a few minutes walk to the centre of Santa Maria. We also had a few days sitting by the pool and eating in the restaurants in the complex.
We got out and did a bit of exploring too. Walking among the sharks in Shark Bay was a really great experience and was the highlight of our holiday in Cape Verde.
We saw the old abandoned salt mines and the Pedra Lume Salt Crater which was great to see. We did a Catamaran tour around the island which was great fun. We really enjoyed that. We also spent a day in Viveiro Botanical Garden & Zoo di Terra. It's like a small zoo and a botanical garden mixed together.
Sal, and Cape Verde in general, is a destination that I imagine will become popular in coming years as more people learn about it as a Winter sun alternative for Europeans. I have been recommending Sal Island to everyone since I've been and can't wait to return.

A short sightseeing on a cloudy day | Santa Maria Sal | Cape Verde
Hi! It's a cloudy day so we did not go far and had a walk closeby Porto Antigo. We went to see the shell cemetery and watched the wing foil surfers then had a burger at Columbus Restaurante and beach. Very good burger and I bet the rest of the food is good too. Must try!
