Top 10 Biggest & Busiest Airport in the World
The COVID-19 pandemic had a substantial impact on the aviation sector since 2019, due to the implementation of travel restrictions around the world which is being done as necessary and as often as possible in a united effort to prevent the spread of the corona virus. Although traveling is no longer simple these days, let us take this opportunity to learn about the top ten (10) largest airports in the world.
The world's airports, large and small, were inactive and slow for the majority of 2020, although they gradually resumed operations in 2021, shortly after some countries began to lessen travel restrictions. This is primarily due to the fact that the virus's spread was somehow controlled and managed to the point where the risks were minimized at the time. In addition, a growing number of people are becoming vaccinated.
Despite the obstacles provided by the COVID-19 outbreak, passenger traffic in the aviation sector has steadily increased in recent years. To accommodate the predicted increasing number of travelers, airport infrastructure is being enhanced and expanded. The busiest airports in the world are also the largest. The world's top ten largest and busiest airports are listed below.

10. Dubai International Airport.
Dubai Airport is home to the biggest duty free shopping centre in the world
Dubai International Airport recently stole the crown from London’s Heathrow as the busiest airport in the world. Not only is it home to the giant jet loving Emirates airline, it also boasts the biggest duty free shopping centre in the world. There are also two open air gardens, spas, gyms and a swimming pool.
9. Frankfurt Airport
Another solid entry from the Germans, Frankfurt (FRA) is the largest airport in the country and third biggest in Europe. Voted 10th favourite by Skytrax and also 10th by Conde Nast, this massive airport has plenty of perks to make transits and stopovers a sheer pleasure.
8. London Heathrow
Despite issues with ridiculous immigration queues and the beleaguered 3rd runway, Heathrow remains one of the most important airports in the world. Voted 8th by Skytrax contributors and 9th by Conde Nast, it remains Europe’s busiest airport by passenger numbers.
7. Vancouver International Airport
Vancouver has been named the top airport in North America, although it only ranked 14th in the overall Skytrax awards. It was the 7th favourite for Conde Nast readers though, chosen for its unique location, situated on an island off the downtown area. A skytrain connects the airport with the city.
6. Munich Airport
As the hub of Lufthansa, Munich Airport (MUC) is a key gateway to central Europe but is actually a place you could hang around a while too. Over the year, the airport hosts a range of seasonal events including winter ice skating, Christmas markets and, of course, Oktoberfest.
5. Hamad International Airport, Doha, Qatar
Scoring 86.99 out of 100 in the Travel+Leisure awards, Hamad International also claimed the 5th best airport in the world title for 2018 from Skytrax. As far as wow factor goes, the building itself is incredible, boasting jaw dropping luxury and being called one of the most ‘architecturally significant’ terminals in the world.
4. Hong Kong International
Scooping 4th best airport from Skytrax and also from Conde Nast and Travel+Leisure’s similar survey, Hong Kong offers a sparkling airport experience to rival other Asian gems. Home to five star airline Cathay Pacific, the airport serves more than 100 airlines connecting passengers to around 180 destinations.
3. Tokyo Haneda
Tokyo Haneda airport was also named as the ‘world’s cleanest airport’ in the Skytrax survey and came in 3rd in the overall best airport category. It also scooped ‘best domestic airport’ for 2018 from Skytrax too. Handling around 86m passengers a year, it’s the third busiest airport in Asia and 4th in the world.
2. Incheon International, Seoul, South Korea
Rolling in at second place in the Skytrax customer voting, Incheon is the busiest airport in South Korea. It found the third spot in the Conde Nast awards too, gaining points from premium travellers for its spacious VIP lounges. Amenities include a skating rink, a spa and its unique ‘Cultural Street’ featuring local food and performances.

Winning the Skytrax ‘world’s best airport’ for the sixth year in a row, Singapore has worked hard to create a glorious airport experience that is the jewel in the crown of Southeast Asia. Welcoming more than 5,000 flights per week from over 200 international destinations, Changi is a key hub for connections all over the world, as well as being a beautiful gateway to the wonders of this region.

The world's busiest airports by passenger traffic are measured by total passengers (data from Airports Council International), defined as passengers enplaned plus passengers deplaned plus direct-transit passengers.
Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport has been the world's busiest airport every year since 2000; with all airports combined London has the world's busiest city airport system by passenger count. As of 2019, six countries have at least two airports in the top 50, with the United States at 15 and Greater China at 11; the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, Spain and India have two airports each. In terms of regions, North America has 17 airports in the top 50, followed by East Asia at 14, Europe at 9, Southeast Asia at 5, West Asia at 2, South Asia at 2 and Oceania at 1.

Acting as the primary international airport serving Atlanta, Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport is the busiest airport in the world by passenger numbers and second busiest by aircraft movements.

2. Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK)
Built to resemble a dragon, Beijing Capital International Airport is the primary international airport serving Beijing and is home to the second largest passenger terminal in the world.

3. Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)
Located along the West Coast of the U.S., Los Angeles International Airport is a gateway to multiple international destinations, particularly Asia and the Pacific.

4. Dubai International Airport (DXB)
Dubai International Airport is the primary international airport serving Dubai and is used as a service hub for the majority of local airlines.

Top 10 Busiest Airports in the World 2022 (2019)
This is the top 10 list of the busiest airports in the world by the total of passengers in 2019.
The world's busiest airports by passenger traffic are measured by total passengers (data from Airports Council International), defined as passengers enplaned plus passengers deplaned plus direct-transit passengers.
The list is almost the same as the last year with exception of Hong Kong International Airport which went out of the top 10. It's been replaced by Dallas Fort Worth Airport which came up from 15th to 10th place.
