Amtrak's Next-Generation of High-Speed Rail
At Amtrak we know the future of the Northeast Corridor depends on the investments we make today, which is why we are excited to announce the upcoming arrival of the next-generation of high-speed rail. The new trainsets will replace the current Acela Express equipment and begin service in 2021.
For this project, we are pleased to be partnering with Alstom, a leading global provider of innovative systems and equipment in the railway sector. Alstom will be building these new trainsets in New York State, with 95% of the trainset’s components being made in America, and parts coming from 350 suppliers in 30 U.S. states.

Just over 100 years ago the first steam engine powered trains took to the rails travelling at about 30 miles an hour was considered fast in the early days. Today, although some steam engine powered trains still exist they are historic pieces used mainly for special tours or museums. Electric powered trains replaced the steam engine and today we have high speed trains travelling at just under 400 mph. in the near future this will also be replaced and considered slow. whatever next??? Shinkansen (Japan): 443 km/h (275 mph)
KTX (South Korea): 421 km/h (262 mph)
ICE (Germany): 407 km/h (253 mph)
AVE (Spain): 404 km/h (251 mph)
ETR (Italy): 362 km/h (225 mph)
Eurosprinter (Europe): 357 km/h (222 mph), the world record for conventional electric locomotives
Incredibly, United States are not in the list, having the record for the highest speed by a train in the USA only at 171 mph (275 km/h), achieved by the UAC TurboTrain (Acela Express)

High speed train of the future
A maglev train inside a semi evacuated (airless) tube allows for maglev trains to travel up to 2000 mph because there is little air resistance. The GM Sequal and hy wire could easily convert tops and get on a new skateboard on the track. And with all that extra space inside the GM cars a turbine could be places in the car top to generate a lot of electricity.
