A Tourist's Guide to Nuku'alofa, Tonga
Part 5 of my South Pacific Trip.
After a night in an airport hotel in Fiji, I jet off to the Kingdom of Tonga. The capital, Nuku'alofa is a sleepy town with a fair smattering of palm trees, foraging pigs and piglets and plenty of (friendly) stray dogs. There's also some big fruit bats.
My full day in Tonga happened to be a Sunday, a day where everything closes except for the churches. So I visit one and listen to some singing before catching a ferry over to Pangaimotu Island.

Tonga, officially Kingdom of Tongan Fakatu'i 'o Tonga, also called Friendly Islands, is country in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. No One Goes to Tonga for a Tropical Vacation - Why Not?
Tonga doesn't receive much tourism these days, but we found a convenient and affordable island resort named Big Mama's (Pangaimotu Island) right off the main island. It's a cheap tropical island destination that is honestly underrated!
For $25 USD, they will ferry you over to the island, feed you lunch, and ferry you back. While on the island, you can snorkel/dive around massive shipwrecks, go for swims in calm waters, tan on the sun deck, play volleyball, lounge in a hammock - basically all the tropical island type of activities that anyone would want to do.
On top of that, they have drinks, of course, which is always a great addition!

Tonga Expedition Part 1. How to get to TONGA
Hello Everyone!
Finally, we are in Tonga!!
We are on the Expedition to swim with Humpback Whales in Vava'u, Tonga!
We've been waiting for this day forever!!
Swimming with Humpback was one of our long long bucket list, and we are finally doing it!
Getting to Tonga was not easy, we were very sleep deprived with early morning flight from Sydney, and a short over-night layover in Fiji.
We were also informed that the airline is very strict on their weight restriction, and there is good chance your luggage may not make it due to the weight/fuel limits. (they cannot refuel in Tonga)
So it was rather nervous and stressful journey getting there, but we arrived just fine with our luggage together ????????
We can't wait to share our adventures out in the ocean with whales!!

Tonga Travel
Tonga, officially the Kingdom of Tonga, is a Polynesian sovereign state and archipelago comprising 169 islands of which 36 are inhabited.[1] The total surface area is about 750 square kilometres (290 sq mi) scattered over 700,000 square kilometres (270,000 sq mi) of the southern Pacific Ocean. It has a population of 103,000 people[8] of whom 70% reside on the main island of Tongatapu.
Tonga stretches across approximately 800 kilometres (500 mi) in a north-south line. It is surrounded by Fiji and Wallis and Futuna (France) to the northwest, Samoa to the northeast, Niue to the east, Kermadec (part of New Zealand) to the southwest, and New Caledonia (France) and Vanuatu to the farther west.
Tonga became known in the West as the Friendly Islands because of the congenial reception accorded to Captain James Cook on his first visit in 1773. He arrived at the time of the ʻinasi festival, the yearly donation of the First Fruits to the Tuʻi Tonga (the islands' paramount chief) and so received an invitation to the festivities. According to the writer William Mariner, the chiefs wanted to kill Cook during the gathering but could not agree on a plan.[9]
From 1900 to 1970, Tonga had British protected state status, with the United Kingdom looking after its foreign affairs under a Treaty of Friendship. The country never relinquished its sovereignty to any foreign power.[10] In 2010, Tonga took a decisive path towards becoming a constitutional monarchy rather than a traditional absolute kingdom, after legislative reforms passed a course for the first partial representative elections.

Nukuʻalofa is the capital of Tonga. It is located on the north coast of the island of Tongatapu, in the southernmost island group of Tonga.
Nukuʻalofa features a tropical rainforest climate under the Köppen climate classification. The area does experience noticeably wetter and drier periods during the year, but it does not have a true dry season month where monthly precipitation falls below 60 millimeters (2.4 in).
