Tikal Guatemala - Ancient Mayan City & Star Wars Rebel Base | 90+ Countries with 3 Kids

Welcome to Tikal, the impressive ancient town of one of the most powerful Mayan kingdoms!

Guatemala is known for being a region sprinkled with ancient town ruins, and Tikal is maybe one of the most fascinating ones. Today Tikal may be to Guatemala what the Great pyramids are to Egypt. Surrounded by rainforest, it is placed 300 kilometers north of Guatemala city.

It is one of the largest archaeological sites and urban centers of the pre-Columbian Maya civilization. In 1979 it was also declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The researchers estimate that it was populated by around 10,000 to as high as 90,000 inhabitants.

There were many speculations about the origin and meaning of its name, but its precise meaning still remains obscure. It didn’t get the name Tikal until its discovery in the 1840s. Before that, it was called Yax Mutal. Researches translated it as “the waterhole” because Tikal used to be a reservoir for hunters and travelers in the region. Alternative suggestions for the meaning of its name are the place of the voices in the Itza Maya language and First Mutal because Mutul was the name of the kingdom itself.

Even though the name itself remains a mystery, Tikal is still one of the best understood Maya cities, because the tombs of many rulers were discovered and the investigation of their monuments, temples, and palaces helped explain its history.

Tikal - Guatemala

The day began in San Ignacio, Belize. We crossed the border into Guatemala and made our way to the Tikal Ruins. The Mayan site is set in the heart of the jungle, in Tikal National Park, now a UNESCO World Heritage site. Tikal consists of more than 3,000 buildings in all, dating from as far back as 600 BC. Following the ruins, we enjoyed lunch aside Lake Peten Itza before making our way to the town of Flores.

Guatemala: The Mayan City of Tikal

Deep in the Guatemalan Jungle are the ruins of Tikal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Once capital of one of the most powerful kingdoms of the ancient Maya, Tikal was built to honour Great King Moon Double Comb. Lord Chocolate, as he was also known, came to power around 700 AD when the cacao tree was worshipped by the Maya of Central America. The ruins of Tikal are located in the Mayan biosphere a 2400 sq km nature reserve that extends into Mexico and Belize and is one of the most impressive archaeological sites of the pre-Columbian Maya civilization. Tikal Mayan Ruins in Guatemala | Family Travel | Raising Biz Kidz

Tikal Mayan Ruins in Guatemala is a must visit. SO much fun with kids and for the whole family.

Tikal, Tikal National Park, Guatemala, Central America, North America

Tikal is the ruin of an ancient city, which was likely to have been called Yax Mutal, found in a rainforest in Guatemala. It is one of the largest archaeological sites and urban centers of the pre-Columbian Maya civilization. It is located in the archaeological region of the Petén Basin in what is now northern Guatemala. Situated in the department of El Petén, the site is part of Guatemala's Tikal National Park and in 1979 it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Tikal was the capital of a conquest state that became one of the most powerful kingdoms of the ancient Maya. Though monumental architecture at the site dates back as far as the 4th century BCE, Tikal reached its apogee during the Classic Period, c. 200 to 900 CE. During this time, the city dominated much of the Maya region politically, economically, and militarily, while interacting with areas throughout Mesoamerica such as the great metropolis of Teotihuacan in the distant Valley of Mexico. There is evidence that Tikal was conquered by Teotihuacan in the 4th century CE. Following the end of the Late Classic Period, no new major monuments were built at Tikal and there is evidence that elite palaces were burned. These events were coupled with a gradual population decline, culminating with the site's abandonment by the end of the 10th century. Tikal is the best understood of any of the large lowland Maya cities, with a long dynastic ruler list, the discovery of the tombs of many of the rulers on this list and the investigation of their monuments, temples and palaces.

Grand Jaguar Temple Maya Ruins Tikal, Peten, Guatemala 1-4-15

Tikal Temple I is the designation given to one of the major structures at Tikal, one of the largest cities and archaeological sites of the pre-Columbian Maya civilization in Mesoamerica. It is located in the Petén Basin region of northern Guatemala. It also is known as the Temple of the Great Jaguar because of a lintel that represents a king sitting upon a jaguar throne.[1] An alternative name is the Temple of Ah Cacao, after the ruler buried in the temple.[nb 1] Temple I is a typically Petén-styled limestone stepped pyramid structure that is dated to approximately 732 AD.

Situated at the heart of a World Heritage Site, the temple is surmounted by a characteristic roof comb, a distinctive Maya architectural feature. Building Temple I on the eastern side of the Great Plaza was a significant deviation from the established tradition of building funerary temples just north of the plaza in Tikal's North Acropolis.[2][3

Belize day 2: Tikal Mayan ruins (Guatemala)

After having a full day's rest in Hopkins, we set out for the Tikal Mayan ruins in Guatemala. I knew the drive was going to be very long, so I wanted to go here first to get the drive over with. It ended up taking 9 hours roundtrip (1 hour at the Guatemalan border). The reason I chose Tikal over the other ruins is because Tikal is a big cluster of Mayan temples. The other ruins that I looked up in Belize only had one temple, so we decided that if we're going to see some Mayan ruins, might as well see the biggest one.

The drive was EXHAUSTING, but it was definitely worth it!
