From its stunning nature, to its delicious food and the very kind people who live there, it is a perfect choice for anyone who wants to see Europe off the beaten track. No hate no shade, I loved Skopje but just couldn't shake its weird vibe.

SKOPJE, North Macedonia | Matka Canyon and FREE Walking Tour!
Skopje, North Macedonia | A day trip to Matka Canyon and Free City Walking Tour
Skopje has to be one of the most unique and unusual cities we have ever visited!
On our first day in Skopje we took advantage of the FREE city walking tour. We think taking a walking tour is essential when first arriving in a new city. There is always so much to learn and you are immediately connected with a local who can usually give you some good advice for enjoying your trip. Here is the link to the free city walking tour we did, if you're interested.
While we enjoyed learning about the rich history of Macedonia, we were a tad more excited to head out of the city and back into nature! If you're in Skopje, you cannot miss a trip to Matka Canyon. This peaceful paradise is only a short 30 minutes bus ride outside of the city. The canyon offers many activities such as hiking trails, kayaking, and a boat ride to Europe's deepest underwater cave, Vrelo Cave. After a quick brunch at one of the restaurants on site, we opted for the serene boat ride and a tour of the cave for just $8 a person. This was definitely a highlight of our time in Macedonia!

A story about Skopje, the capital of North Macedonia.
Sometimes the best countries are the most surprising.
North Macedonia certainly falls into that category.
You can fly to Skopje from Istanbul.
The country is home to around two million people.
The people are mainly Orthodox Slavs, although an ethnic Albanian minority makes up around a quarter of the population.
It is one of the poorest countries in Europe with an average salary of 400 euros.
Two historic personalities are a source of pride: Mother Teresa and Alexander the Great.
Mother Teresa was born in Skopje under the Ottoman Empire and was of Albanian origin.
The Albanians also claim her as their own.
Alexander the Great, meanwhile, has been the focal point of an identity battle with Greeks over who can claim to his heritage?
Macedonia is the cheapest country I’ve experienced in Europe.
Many guides say that Bulgaria is the cheapest, but I found North Macedonia to be even cheaper!
The hotels cost around $10
Meals were from $3 to $5
The country formerly known as the Republic of Macedonia officially changed its name to the Republic of North Macedonia in 2019.
Initially, after declaring independence from Yugoslavia in 1991, the country chose the name Macedonia, but it severely strained relations with its neighbour, Greece.
North Macedonia is not as well-known as it should be, and it’s in a position to grow immensely — so much that it could even become the new hotspot of the Balkans.
Most people spoke good English.
If you want to get off the beaten track in Europe – this is the place.
You’ll see neo classical buildings and fountains everywhere, funded by the previous government.
Luckily, its Ottoman old town and modern areas are untouched and remain charming and authentic.
I found North Macedonia absolutely fascinating — and one that deserves to be visited more.
A word of warning first: keep your credit card handy! After watching this you’ll want to book the next flight out of here to check out this fantastic place in North Macedonia for a few days!
