The remote farm at the edge of the world - BBC REEL

On the southern tip of South America in Tierra del Fuego, is a cattle ranch that is one of the most southerly in the world. It still has gardens and rooms that wouldn’t look out of place in the town in Devon, Britain, that it was named after.

It's called Estancia Harberton and is as remote as it is inhospitable.

The hidden world beneath the ancient Alhambra fortress - BBC REEL

The ancient fortress of the Alhambra has a fascinating history, passing from Moorish sultans to Catholic kings. Today it is one of Spain's most visited tourist attractions and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

However, very few know of the secret world of the Alhambra that lies unseen below the surface - a hidden network of tunnels and dungeons, off limits to tourists, that are still being uncovered and understood by archaeologists today.

The tiny nation waging war on plastic - BBC REEL

Over the years, the tropical island nation of Vanuatu has struggled with its attempts to eliminate single-use plastics, but thanks to an extensive campaign, the country is about to implement one of the toughest plastic bans in the world.

Last year it banned drinking straws, plastic bags and styrofoam, but by December 2019 it will have added all single-use plastics to the list (ahead of the EU next year).

The medieval 'doomsday bunker' hidden beneath a castle - BBC REEL

At first sight, there is little clue to the secrets that lie beneath the Château de Brézé in France. But below the surface of this impressive castle lies a deep network of tunnels and rooms that together form one of Europe's largest underground fortresses.

Much like the billionaires of today, the lords of this castle carefully constructed themselves a medieval 'doomsday bunker' to provide themselves with shelter and protection in the face of invasion or disease.

The daring journey inside the world's deepest cave - BBC REEL

The Veryovkina Cave is the deepest known cave on Earth. It took half a century and about 30 expeditions for Russian cave explorers to reach its record depth of 2,212 metres. Speleologists still think there is more to be discovered.

Memories from a flooded city - BBC REEL

Villa Epecuén was a small town in the Buenos Aires province, founded in 1920 on the shores of a salt lake. The healing properties of its waters made it one of the country’s most renowned holiday resorts.

Following violent rains, in 1985 the lake flooded the whole city. 25 years later the waters retired, revealing a ghost town. 89-year-old local citizen Pablo Novak witnessed the city’s birth and death, andis now the towns only remaining inhabitant.

Japan's mysterious 'keyhole' tombs - BBC REEL

A sense of mystery surrounds the keyhole-shaped kofun tombs in Japan.

Although the iconic Mozu Tombs in Sakai city, Osaka have recently been awarded UNESCO World Heritage status, surprisingly little is actually known about these intriguing monuments, kept under lock and key by the Japanese government.

#OSLO
Longyearbyen (Urban East Norwegian: [ˈlɔ̀ŋjiːrˌbyːən];[1] The Longyear Town) is the world's northernmost settlement (with population greater than 1,000) and largest inhabited area of Svalbard, Norway. It stretches along the foot of the left bank of the Longyear Valley and on the shore of Adventfjorden, the short estuary leading into Isfjorden on the west coast of Spitsbergen, the island's broadest inlet. As of 2002 Longyearbyen Community Council became an official Norwegian municipality. It is the seat of the Governor of Svalbard. The town's mayor is Arild Olsen.[2]

Known as Longyear City until 1926, the town was established by and named after American John Munro Longyear, whose Arctic Coal Company started coal-mining there in 1906. Store Norske Spitsbergen Kulkompani (SNSK) took over the mining operations in 1916, and still conducts mining. The German Kriegsmarine almost completely destroyed the town on 8 September 1943, but rebuilding took place after the Second World War. Historically, Longyearbyen was a company town, but most mining operations moved to Sveagruva during the 1990s, and production ceased in 2017 due to immense financial losses suffered by SNSK since 2014 due to market conditions.[3] Meanwhile, the town has seen a large increase in tourism and research. This includes the arrival of institutions such as the University Centre in Svalbard, the Svalbard Global Seed Vault and Svalbard Satellite Station. Svalbard Airport, Svalbard Church and the Svalbardbutikken department store serve the community. wikipedia

TOP OF THE WORLD - Longyearbyen (Nov 2017) Svalbard

Headed to Longyearbyen November 2017 - The High Arctic. About 600 miles or so South of the North Pole lies Longyearbyen, Svalbard. Technically part of Norway, it's an Island off the continent - independently run, as I understand it from the locals. I will upload separate (longer) videos of our private tour to the Gloval Seed Vault (funded by Bill Gates and his wife). We arrived on Polar Night where it is dark 24 hours a day for about 3 months. Such a remote, fascinating research settlement. Right up my alley!!
