The French Caribbean Island Guadeloupe looks from above like two butterfly wings. Its two islands Grande Terre and Basse Terre are separated only by a narrow channel. The modern infrastructure and the good food are mixed with the local culture. Gwoka is the music of Guadeloupe, which is reminiscent of slavery.

Located on the lesser Antilles, Guadeloupe is the French part of the Caribbean and belongs to the European Union. It consists out of different islands: Grande Terre consists of limestone with long beautiful beaches, Basse Terre is a mountainous island with extensive rainforest and the volcano, la Soufrière. There are also the smaller islands of Marie-Galante and La Désirade, the Îles de la Petite Terre and the Îles des Saintes.
When Christopher Columbus came to Guadeloupe in 1493, the existing populations were the Caribs. But Christopher Columbus did not stay, because the Spanish wanted to discover larger islands. The smaller island in the Caribbean were colonized by the British and French, so in 1635 Guadeloupe by the French. It was mainly farmers from Normandie, Brittany and Charente settled on the island and cultivated Coffee and sugarcane plantations.

With the French revolution, slavery was abolished in 1794, but it was reintroduced by Napoleon in 1802 because of the cheap labour and lasted until 1848.

The civilization today is creole, a melting pot: French, the descendants of black slaves, Indian immigrants, Syrian-Libanese immigrants and nowadays Chinese immigrants. Creole cuisine is a mixture of European food with African ingredients, oriental flavours and products from the Caribbean.
Gwoka is the traditional music on Guadeloupe, but not only music and danse, but also the joy of life and a reminder of the time of slavery

-------
Caribbean Moments shows a different side to the Caribbean. Everyone visualises sand, sunshine and palm trees – but hardly anyone really discovers what lies behind them. In fact an unbelievable variety of cultures, music and religions has developed as a result of the different influences – African, Indian, English, French and authentically Caribbean.

This documentary series attempts to portray the people - be they the Rastas, who have a lot to say about their mission, the Amerindians in Trinidad, who still have their own Queen, or the Black Caribs – a mixture of escaped slaves and Caribs.

In addition, of course, there’s a huge variety of music: steelpan, parang, calypso, soca and chutney soca shape Trinidad, whilst other islands are especially scenically beautiful, such as Dominica, which is actually a single rain forest and which seduces with its abundant vegetation. Here too are the true Caribs, who occupy themselves with traditional boat building in the same way as their ancestors did centuries ago.

The films were produced in 6 parts to create a documentary series that shows what lies beneath the surface.

MARTINIQUE: Caribbean Paradise Travel Video

MARTINIQUE: Caribbean Paradise by Kris Karch Visuals

Last month I had an opportunity to spend two wonderful weeks in Martinique - beautiful Carabbean island. It was on my bucket list for a long time and thanks to the new budget airline - Level, it finally became possible to get there cheaply! I was amazed by the island from day one - beside it's beauty, it's not yet crowded by turists, local people are really kind and waht's important for me, it has perfect surf spots that are still not popular (it will change soon, believe me!).

Locations used in the video:
- Mount Pelee (volcano)
- Caravelle Peninsula
- Cap Salomon
- Fort-de-France
- Diamant
- Sainte-Anne
- Morne Rouge
- J.M Rhum distillery
and more.

Big thanks to Vanessa and whole SURF UP Martinique surfhouse for letting us boards and taking care of us while surfing! Go visit their website:

MAP OF MARTINIQUE

greetings my friends. This is a map of Martinique. Part of the archipelago of the Antilles, Martinique is located in the Caribbean Sea about 450 km northeast of the coast of South America and about 700 km southeast of the Dominican Republic. It is north of St. Lucia, northwest of Barbados and south of Dominica. Martinique is the 3rd largest island in The Lesser Antilles after Trinidad and Guadeloupe. It stretches 70 km in length and 30 km in width. The highest point is the volcano of Mount Pelée at 1,397 m above sea level. There are numerous small islands, particularly off the east coast.

also , the Caravelle Peninsula and Martinique's Atlantic coast can be
seen from the Phare de la Caravelle.
The Atlantic, or windward coast of Martinique is difficult to navigate by ship. A combination of coastal cliffs, shallow coral reefs and cays, and strong winds make the area notoriously hazardous for sea traffic. The Caravelle peninsula clearly separates the north Atlantic and south Atlantic coast.

The Caribbean, or leeward coast of Martinique is much more favourable to sea traffic. Besides being shielded from the harsh Atlantic trade winds by the island, the sea bed itself descends steeply from the shore. This ensures that most potential hazards are deep underwater, and prevents the growth of corals.

The north of the island is especially mountainous. It features four ensembles of pitons or (volcanoes) , and mornes, or (mountains) , the Piton Conil on the extreme North, which dominates the Dominica Channel; Mont Pelée, an active volcano; the Morne Jacob; and the Pitons du Carbet, an ensemble of five extinct volcanoes covered with rainforest and dominating the Bay of Fort de France at 1,196 m. Mont Pelée's volcanic ash has created grey and black sand beaches in the north , (in particular between Anse Ceron and Anse des Gallets), contrasting markedly from the white sands of Les Salines in the south.

the Grand Anse beach, a haven for sea turtles, in the southwest peninsula .
The south is more easily traversed, though it still features impressive geographic features. Because it is easier to travel to, and due to the many beaches and food facilities throughout this region, the south receives most of the tourism. The beaches from Pointe de Bout, through Diamant (which features right off the coast of Roche de Diamant), St. Luce, the department of St. Anne and down to Les Salines are popular.

#martinique #caribbean #caribe #caribean #mapschool #mapsolo #petamap #cartemap #mapamap #kartemap
