The Wild Nature in the Mountains of South Tyrol

x

The Pale Mountains of South Tyrol | The Alps from above (9/10)

South Tyrol and Trentino are Italy’s northern provinces. The journey from a bird’s eye view leads from Val Venosta in the North of Bolzano across the Dolomites in the East. Most farms have been built high up in the mountains - on scenic locations that can only be reached by road for a few years. Surgery nurse Astrid Jung likes to spend her holidays on the Tuerkhof farm - to work as a farmhand. And veterinarian Marion Tartarotti takes care of the animals that cannot be transported down to the valley. The Hochjoch glacier is where the climate changes in this world of ice are being studied.

Further south, the view from the air opens up on the vineyards on Lake Kaltern. Elena Walch, a trained architect, has become one of the most successful winemakers of the region. Near Pinzolo, Filippo Zibordi is hot on the trails of an animal species that has almost been extinct in the Alpine region: the brown bear. He studies their mating behaviour and makes sure their caves are protected. Lake Garda lies in the South of Pinzolo. It forms a hollow in between 2.000 meter high mountains. During the nights, the air cools off drastically, thus generating winds that offer the perfect conditions for kite surfers such as Chiara Piccoli.

Overnight in the Most Secluded Hut of Dolomites | MARMOLADA

Download the GPX track:

Hey! Welcome to a new adventure!
In this video, I'm reaching the top of Marmolada, the queen of Dolomites (highest mountain of Dolomites - 3343m)

With the first little snowfall of the year, the track was a little bit more complicated than usual, and I had to climb the via ferrata slower than I expected.
But the hospitality of Carlo Budel at Capanna Punta Penia was amazing. The view of Dolomites from up there is extraordinary.

Dedicated to the victims of Marmolada glacier collapse in July 2022. Rest in Peace.

Hiking Hut to Hut | Italian Dolomites | Alta Via 1

Alta Via 1 is a famous through hike in the Dolomites in Italy. Typically done in 7 to 10 days, it is about 75 miles long with many mountain Rifugios (refuges) along the way. We hiked it all in 7 days, here are some of our tips!

We planned this trek just THREE weeks before we left! We got very lucky getting the Rifugios we wanted based on our timeline. It probably helped that we were doing this at the end of the season as some huts were already closed or closing. Everything worked out and we were blessed with PERFECT weather. It did not rain on us once! Can’t think of a better way to experience the Dolomites than to hike through it.

7 days
75 miles
23,000 ft elev gain
20 pounds of pasta and cheese ????

Takeaways:

????DO book your huts in advanced. Some got turned away. This gave us peace of mind knowing we had a secure place to sleep each night.

????DO bring cash as some places don’t accept cards.

????DO download a gpx of the trail/have a map. It is pretty well signed throughout but always best to have this handy.

????️DO learn some basic Italian & German. We were surprised at how many spoke German more so in the northern half of the trail.

????DO stay at Lago di Braies the night before the trek. It’s a little spendy but it was worth it since the trail started right there! Plus I mean we’ve all seen views of the lake, it’s beautiful.

????DONT bring a lot of snacks, we didn’t eat one protein bar. Unless you have a specific diet to follow, there are Rifugios sprinkled along the trail to stop at for food.

????DONT overpack, you can wash & rewear clothes.

????DONT forget to pack a sleeping bag liner, hut sandals & ear plugs

???? DONT rush. Take your time, soak it all in. Talk with other people at the huts and on the trail.

Austrian and Italian Alps

Rick Steves' Europe Travel Guide © 2020 | In the Alps of Austria and Italy, we celebrate both nature and culture. After conquering the Zugspitze, we tour Innsbruck, visit a remote farm in Austria, and join in a Tirolean village festival. Then we cross the Alps into Italy and tour a uniquely well-preserved medieval castle before joyriding deep into the rugged Dolomite Mountains. After an unforgettable hike, we catch our breath in Europe’s largest high-altitude meadow, then enjoy some more alpine folk music. #ricksteves #austrianalps #italianalps

The WILD SIDE of DOLOMITES - Monte Cridola, Dolomiti Friulane

In this episode, I'm adventuring in the Dolomiti Friulane, a wild area in the eastern side of Dolomites. The goal is to reach the top of Monte Cridola, a 2581m peak that is famous for its many towers and pinnacles. It's a place I have always dreamed to visit, so I was really happy to finally explore this incredible landscape!

After almost 4 hours of hike/climb on unstable terrain (1400m D+), I found a great place to set my tent and enjoy the incredible scenaries all around. Even though I didn't reach the top (my backpack was too heavy for climbing and there was some snow left in the culoir) the view was insane!

NOTE: the last part of the ascent is an easy alpine route up to 2nd grade climbing. Please approach this kind of routes ONLY if you have some mountain experience or with a guide.

I've been very lucky to find great light conditions both at sunrise and sunset, that allowed me to capture some great photos and some very nice aerial videos.
Hope you enjoy them :)

Glaciers and Rolling Hills in Tyrol | The Alps from above (5/10)

The fifth episode leads us across Eastern Tyrol. Shortly after sunrise, there is only one person on the road here: musher Martin Eigentler with his 24 Huskies. In winter the European champion takes part in races all over the world.

A loud roar disturbs the idyllic quietness in Wildschoenau: Conrad Gruber tunes powerful sports cars, and ups their power to more than 800 PS. The journey leads us to High Tauern National Park. The summits are covered with ice and snow, even in summer. But due to global warming the alpine glaciers are melting. Scientist want to find out which dangers impend, when millions of litres of meltwater tear down rocks on their way to the valley. In the Tuxan Alps Himalayan sherpas get trained as lodgekeepers in Tyrolean huts. In the Karwendel massif Hermann Albrecht and his son Bernhard bore for precious rock oil. The journey ends in Innsbruck, where the foundry Grassmayr have been manufacturing bells since 1599.

Towering Heights between South Tyrol and Austria | The Alps from above (6/10)

In the sixth episode the journey leads among the peaks in Tyrol’s west, crossing the border to South Tyrol near the Oetz valley. Starting point is Innsbruck’s Alpine zoo, where zookeeper Michael Winkler takes care of the brown bears and wolves. The helicopter crosses the Brennero pass. In summer the toll stations here become a bottleneck for holidaymakers heading for Italy.

For generations the Gurschler family has driven sheep of the close-by farms to the summer pastures of the adjoining Oetz valley. The hike over the glacier is dangerous, and rising fog makes it difficult for them to get all the sheep safely to their destination. A few kilometres further off in Soelden, Michael Gritsch maintains one of the most modern cable cars in the world. In his revision he checks every reel, every rope – whilst standing on a moving cable car. At the height of 3000 meters two young people offer a place to spend the night – at the Muellerhuette. The hut is only accessible in summer. The route leads on to Pitz valley where Kassian Erhart is searching for melodious stones to turn into instruments. At the Inntal valleys two beekeepers make honey from mountain blossoms. Bees all over the world are in danger: because of parasites, germs and pesticides. People like the bee keepers can help the colonies to stay in good health.

South Tyrol: Italy's mountains and glossy lakes | Condé Nast Traveller

At Lago di Dobbiaco, the peaks of Italy’s Dolomites climb from the horizon, acting as a backdrop to the countryside of South Tyrol. This is one of the most beautiful corners of Italy: its rolling fields create produce that supply the region’s 26 Michelin-starred restaurants (making it the starriest province in the country), while the jagged mountains and glossy lakes are a base for skiing, hiking and wild swimming. At Skyview Chalet, utilitarian wooden cabins have floor-to-ceiling windows with views over the surrounding forests and hills. Subscribe to Condé Nast Traveller ►►

Italy, Dolomite Alps, Trekking day, Schlern - Sciliar, South Tyrol

The Schlern - Rosengarten Naure Park, in italian Sciliar-Catinaccio Nature Park owes its name to South Tyrol’s emblem, Mt. Schlern in the western Dolomites, and to the legendary Rosengarten Group.

Together with the Siusi Alp, Europe's largest Alpine pasture covering an area of 56 sq km, the Sciliar-Catinaccio Nature Park - Naturpark Schlern-Rosengarten in German, Parco Naturale Sciliar-Catinaccio in Italian - is a coherent area in respect of natural conditions and landscape. The Sciliar Nature Park was founded in 1974 around the Sciliar Massif, which gave it its name - with the two peaks Cima Santner and Cima Euringer it is considered to be the landmark of South Tyrol.

Pragser Wildsee: Walking around the beautiful Pragser Wildsee | South Tyrol Italy -Dolomites

16.June 2020: One day after the border from Austria to Italy has been opend after the Corona-lookdown I visited this beautiful lake. There were some tourists - mainly from Italy, but not overcrowded. Very relaxing.
This Lake (Italian: Lago di Braies; German: Pragser Wildsee) is a lake in the Prags Dolomites in South Tyrol, Italy.

The Dolomites (Le Dolomiti), The Stelvio Pass (Passo dello Stelvio / Stilfser Joch) and The Vizze's Valley in Tyrol (Val di Vizze, Tirolo). filmed in 4K Ultra High Definition.

TOP Gear defines Italy's Stelvio Pass:: One of the World's greatest roads. The Stelvio Pass (Italian: Passo dello Stelvio) is a mountain pass in northern Italy, at an elevation of 2,757 m (9,045 ft) above sea level. It is the highest paved mountain pass in the Eastern Alps, and the second highest in the Alps.

The original road was built in 1820–25 by the Austrian Empire to connect the former Austrian province of Lombardy with the rest of Austria, covering a climb of 1,871 m (6,138 ft) The engineer and project manager was Carlo Donegani (1775–1845). Since then, the route has changed very little. Its seventy-five hairpin turns, 48 of them on the northern side numbered with stones, are a challenge to motorists. Stirling Moss went off the road here during a vintage car event in the 1990s, with an onboard video of his incident being shown on satellite TV.

Before the end of World War I, it formed the border between the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Italian Kingdom. The Swiss had an outpost and a hotel (which was destroyed) on the Dreisprachenspitze (literally, Three-Language-Peak). During World War I, fierce battles were fought in the ice and snow of the area, with gun fire even crossing the Swiss area at times. The three nations made an agreement not to fire over Swiss territory, which jutted out in between Austria (to the north) and Italy (to the south). Instead they could fire down the pass, as Swiss territory was up and around the peak. After 1919, with the expansion of Italy, the pass lost its strategic importance.

The Dolomites well deserve to be in the UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites. It's a mesmerizing, ancient and mystical location, where you can enjoy nature at its best. It is one of those places that makes you understand why Italy is such a famous place for tourism.
The Dolomites are part of Unesco's World Heritage Sites. The Dolomites (Italian: Dolomiti are a mountain range located in northeastern Italy. They form a part of the Southern Limestone Alps and extend from the River Adige in the west to the Piave Valley (Pieve di Cadore) in the east. The northern and southern borders are defined by the Puster Valley and the Sugana Valley (Italian: Valsugana). The Dolomites are nearly equally shared between the provinces of Belluno, South Tyrol and Trentino.
There are also mountain groups of similar geological structure that spread over the River Piave to the east – Dolomiti d'Oltrepiave; and far away over the Adige River to the west – Dolomiti di Brenta (Western Dolomites). There is also another smaller group called Piccole Dolomiti (Little Dolomites) located between the provinces of Trentino, Verona and Vicenza (see map).
The Dolomiti Bellunesi National Park and many other regional parks are located in the Dolomites.
The Dolomiti is a World Heritage Site!

The municipality of Val di Vizze is located in the homonymous valley and is surrounded by the majestic scenery of the Zillertal Alps.
Val di Fleres is one of the northernmost municipalities of South Tyrol and borders directly on Austria. The 23 km long genuine valley (943 – 3.509 m) stretches from Prati via Fleres di Dentro up to the high Alpine scenery of the Passo di Vizze (2,246 m). Bounded by the mountains of the Tux mountain ridge in the north and the Monti di Fundres in the south, the valley stretches into the heart of the Zillertal Alps, the highest sommit of which is the Gran Pilastro (3.509 m).

No matter if you choose the Alta Via Venna alla Gerla, the Rifugio Gran Pilastro or the Passo di Vizze or Passo di Fundres, there are plenty of hiking and mountain biking destination. The so-called Gliedergang at the head of the valley, however, is rich in minerals such as the Blue Beryll, their collection is, however, strictly forbidden.
