When you open your bag, do you prefer a neatly organized system that’s easy to navigate or a jumbled mess of creased clothing? If you’re the former, great! We’re going to get along just fine, and you’re definitely in the right place.
First and foremost, packing cubes are used to organize the contents of your bag. But they can also help save space, as a cube will compress your clothes together. There are even specific “compression cubes” that take this a step further, which we’ll get into a bit later. The point is, when you’re cramming your life inside a carry-on sized backpack, you’ll want to save space where you can—and packing cubes are one of the best ways to do that.
And if you’re still thinking packing cubes are a waste of time, we should mention that these nifty things make packing and unpacking way easier. Whether you’re an ultra-minimalist, an “I need absolutely everything for any situation” packer, or something in-between—being able to just swap a few bags in and out of your pack is a dream.
At the end of the day, there is no “best packing cube,” but hopefully this guide will help steer you in the right direction to pick up the best packing cube for you. How to Use Packing Cubes for Carryon Travel: Video 1/5
Slim packing cubes are the ultimate travel organizers because they help you maximize the space in your bag so you can fit all your belongings in an organized and efficient way using minimal space.

In this video tutorial by long term traveler and packing expert Alexandra Jimenez, editor and founder of Travel Fashion Girl, shows you the strategy that helped millions of our readers travel carryon only. I developed this method to help me travel carryon only as a full time traveler.
Instead of just using travel packing cubes for organization, I actually used them for compression by rolling, zipping, and then adding more clothes. Learn more about how to use packing cubes here:
With the Compass Rose Carryon Packing Cubes, we use quality materials to ensure maximum compression. They also have a numbered and color coded system, which helps you organize your belongings in six unique ways explained here:
The above video shows the Compass Rose Packing Strategy Organize by Item.
The capsule wardrobe used in this video is the Maximista 15-Piece Packing List option. You can find the rest of the Travel Fashion Girl Signature Packing Lists here:
In total there were 5 bottoms, 3 dresses, and 7 tops (which fit into three of the packing cubes). Note: I usually travel with around 10 clothing items but I wanted to pack the maximum number of clothes to show you how much you can fit.
I used the numbered Compass Rose packing cube system to organize by clothing type. The #1 packing cube was used for tops, #2 packing cube for dresses and outerwear, #3 packing cube for bottoms, and #4 packing cube for undergarments, silk thermals, and pajamas.
When I travel, I usually organize my clothing by item type as shown in this video. In the rest of this video series, I show you other options such as organizing by outfit, weather, or destination.

If you've never traveled with just a carry-on, we highly recommend it. Why? Because it’s freeing. There’s no need to wait at the airport to get your checked luggage. You can breeze through security quickly. And you have everything you need on you at all times.
In most cases, a smaller carry-on-sized bag forces you to be mindful of what you bring, which means you won’t have to haul around bulky luggage or excess gear. Even if you jam your bag full, it’s still a relatively compact package.
