EL YUNQUE NATIONAL FOREST - 2023 [Travel Guide] | Rio Grande, Puerto Rico

This week we attempt to hike “El Yunque”, the highest peak within Puerto Rico. This [Travel Guide] will help you prepare and know what to expect in 2023.

At a distance of 30 miles from San Juan, a visit to El Yunque makes for a really fun day trip while visiting Puerto Rico.

The National Forest where El Yunke is located is HUGE, 29,000 acres of tropical forest and mountains. We honestly did not expect to find this little gem hidden only a 40 minute drive from Puerto Rico’s capital.
We took with us the New DJI Mini 2 and a GoPro Hero 9 and we got some amazing videos that we want to share with you.
The hike to the top is definitely long, close to three hours, but believe me it is well worth it. The view from the top is spectacular, you almost feel you can see the whole Island from up there.

Some tips:
In order to visit the forest you will need to book at least one day in advance through the USA national Parks website:

The price is super cheap, $2 per car. However, you must either own or rent a car to visit El Yunque. Taxis and Ubers are not allowed within the reserve and there is zero public transportation to and from San Juan.
If you want to experience the forest at its best we strongly encourage you to go first thing in the morning. The gates open at 8AM and we showed up at 7:45AM. We had to be up at 6:30 in the morning but it was totally worth it, we were the only people everywhere we went.
We had everything to ourselves, waterfalls and natural pools! People didn’t really start arriving until 11am and by that time we were already on our way down.

There are many trails available to hikers, we wanted to get the full experience so we opted for the longest one. It’s the El Yunque peak trail and it’s supposed to take 2 hours each way.
It rained heavily the night before our visit so the trails were a little muddy and it actually took us closer to 3 hours to the top, all in all about 5 hours for the full trip.

Make sure you take a picture of the TRAILS MAP at the entrance since you’re likely to lose cell signal once you start hiking and without a map it easy to get lost.
Also, make sure you bring enough water and food to last you for a few hours. There are a couple of vending machines near the entrance but outside of that, it’s just nature out there.

Leave us some comments and let us know what you think about our video!

PUERTO'S RICO'S YELLOWSTONE | Exploring El Yunque National Forest + Why Tickets Are Required ???? ????️ ????

El Yunque National Forest is Puerto Rico's premier hiking destination, a short, 45-minute drive from San Juan. The forest spans nearly 30,000 acres on the northeastern side of the island.

El Yunque receives around 200 inches of rain each year, on average. That precipitation feeds waterfalls throughout the forest, which is home to more than 1,000 plant species and animals like the coqui tree frog, Puerto Rican parrot, Puerto Rican boa, and Puerto Rican giant green lizard.

I enjoyed hiking to Mount Britton Tower and the El Yunque summit, plus the Angelito and Los Picachos Trails.

As of April 2023, El Yunque was limiting access to 300 vehicles per day to prevent overcrowding. And so, you had to make a reservation in advance on Recreation.gov. The cost was $2 per car, and it was non-refundable.

One way around the daily limit is to book with an authorized tour operator that uses special permits. Recreation.gov also releases a set number of tickets at 8 a.m. each morning, for the next day, to help people who did not plan ahead.

BEST EXCURSION IN PUERTO RICO - El Yunque!

Puerto RIco is a beautiful island with tons of things to do. On our vacation we booked in our opinion, the best excursion the island has to offer. This is our experience at El Yunque! The only rainforest in the United States, lies on the eastside of the island. Our tour guide led us on a hike through the forest sharing with us the unique plants and trees along with fun facts about our national rainforest.

The main reason we booked this excursion was to experience the natural slides within the water falls. As we made our way into the forest, our guides took us to an open area full of fun! Along with the natural water slides, we were able to cliff jump and also swing from a rope into the refreshing water. The hike was not challenging and the tour guides make sure to help everyone get through to the end. Make sure to bring the right shoes for this excursion. You WILL be getting wet and stepping on plenty of rocks.

I recommend this excursion to anyone traveling to the wonderful island of Puerto Rico! You can not visit and miss out on El Yunque. I hope you enjoy this footage from our vacation. Please let me know what you think or if this video was helpful!

Join us on day four of our Puerto Rico adventure as we take to the El Yunque National Forest for Puerto Rico's muddiest hike, the El Toro Trail. We'll show you why this El Yunque hike is one of the most polarizing in Puerto Rico, as it is either loved or hated by those who are brave enough to attempt it. Stay tuned to the end to see if we make it to the peak and if we think this hike is worth it.

El Yunque National Forest Travel Guide in Puerto Rico for outdoor & nature lovers

El Yunque National Forest is a tropical rainforest in northeastern Puerto Rico. From El Portal Visitor Center, a walkway winds through the surrounding treetops.

We visited El Yunque National Forest on our way to Fajardo which is a port/harbor in the East of the Main Island of Puerto Rico. There are two other islands Isla Vieques and Isla Culebra which have some of the most pristine beaches on this planet.

Keep watching on how we hiked in El Yunque and some of the majestic flora and fauna we came across throughout this island. As I mentioned I saw numerous trees that are found in India like Gulmohar (Flame of the Forest), Asoka Tree, Peepal Trees and so on. Culturally I felt the life of the people, the driving on the roads and warmth of the people was very similar to back home in India. Very friendly people and always helped me find vegetarian food without hassles.

Car Rental: for about $25/day.

El Yunque National Rainforest 2023

Our little family decided to explore part of Puerto Rico. One of the days here we discovered the El Yunque National Rainforest.

El Yunque is the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System but it is also a sacred place in Puerto Rican culture. Many believe its name comes from the Taíno word Yuke, or white earth, a reference to the clouds that gather around the forest's mountainous peak; others believe it derives from Yúcahu, the Taíno deity of fertility. The park has a very diverse ecosystem, with hundreds of unique plant and animal species, including Puerto Rico's famous coquí frog.

Hope you enjoy this look into an amazing view of just part of what this place has to offer. We were sad to find out that about 1/2 the park is still closed due to the hurricane from 2019, but it was still a great visit.

A waterfall that we climbed at El Yunque during our recent visit to Puerto Rico. #elyunque
