Alcatraz: Escape to the Wiregrass (Part 3)

Was a supposed photo of the Anglin brothers really taken in Colombia and not Brazil? Did at least one of the escapees make it back to Florida in the 1980s? Was Frank Morris spotted in New Orleans? These and other questions are the focus in Part 3 of Two Egg TV's special 3-part documentary, Alcatraz: Return to the Wiregrass.

HARRY POTTER STUDIO TOUR LONDON | COMPLETE WALK THROUGH

Take a full walk through tour around the Harry Potter Studio Tour in London and see all the props and sets from the movies. Filmed during Hogwarts in the Snow.

Subscribe:

Warner Bros. Studio Tour London is a behind-the-scenes walking tour featuring authentic sets, costumes and props from the Harry Potter film series.

Walk in the footsteps of Harry Potter and explore the wonders of the Wizarding World.

Serving as the backdrop to some of the film series’ most iconic scenes such as the Yule Ball and the Battle of Hogwarts, the Great Hall was first built for Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone in 2000 and was used as a key set for six more films. The spectacular Great Hall includes the costumes of students from each Hogwarts house plus two large tables which are set for dinner; at the top of the room is the teachers' table where the Hogwarts Professors sat. The Great Hall is home to some of the beautiful hand crafted props created for the Harry Potter film series including Professor Dumbledore’s lectern and the House Points Counter. Though rarely seen on screen, it is rumoured that when the House Points Counter was first built it caused a national shortage of Indian glass beads.

The Forbidden Forest seen in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was a combination of location and studio shooting. This moved entirely to the Studio for Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets in order to house Aragog’s lair and continued to grow throughout the film series. While shooting for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, scenic artists created backdrops that were up to six hundred feet in length. The Forbidden Forest seen at the Studio Tour is filled with 19 trees each with a diameter of over 12 feet.

The Diagon Alley set constantly changed throughout the film series. Since its construction, walls have shifted, shop fronts have moved and entire buildings have been carefully tweaked, leaning just slightly, to create the street that is seen in the films. Many of the Diagon Alley set pieces were also re-dressed for use in the village of Hogsmeade for Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. The original design of the street combined the rich details from the Harry Potter books with inspiration from the streets described in the works of Charles Dickens. Diagon Alley is home to not only Gringotts Bank, Flourish and Blotts and Mr Mulpepper’s Apothecary but also the dusty Ollivanders wand shop, where Harry’s wand famously chose him. The shop was home to more than 17,000 individually labelled wand boxes during filming.

HOGWARTS IN THE SNOW

New for 2021, the trees and woodland in the Forbidden Forest have been given a festive makeover, draped in layers of filmmaking snow, as well as the cobbled stones and magical shop fronts of Diagon Alley, Hagrid’s Hut and the Hogwarts castle model.

Once again, the enchanting Great Hall is dressed for the occasion with wreaths, garlands and trees topped with witches on miniature broomsticks. The long dining tables are dressed as they were for the seasonal feast in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, complete with Special Effects flaming Christmas puddings and prop versions of the mouth-watering roast turkeys and hams studded with cherries.

2022 will conclude with the return of the Yule Ball for Hogwarts in the Snow, as the Great Hall is transformed with the icy silvers of the iconic Yule Ball scene. The Gryffindor common room will be dressed for the season and a blanket of filmmaking snow will cover the Forbidden Forest, Diagon Alley and the magnificent Hogwarts castle model.

Swann Galleries Auction Preview Art Nouveau Posters Part 1

On Wednesday, December 17 Swann Galleries will offer an outstanding private collection of 11 posters by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, and seven by Alphonse Mucha as part of their annual auction of Rare & Important Art Nouveau Posters. The posters are from the collection of Bob and Peggy Marcus, who assembled their collection over the course of 30 years. They continually sought out the finest examples, always with an eye on condition.

This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to acquire these extraordinarily rare and important works in exceptional condition, said Nicholas Lowry, Swann President and Poster Specialist.

The auctions top lot is a copy of Lautrecs Moulin Rouge, La Goulue, 1891, the artists first poster, in the very rare three-sheet version, and with the original top banner. Likely the single most important poster in the history of graphic arts, the enormous color lithograph advertises a performance by can-can dancer La Goulue at the famous cabaret. When the poster was first released, dealers found the size unmanageable and discarded the top banner, making versions with the original top virtually unavailable. The provenance goes back to Lautrecs own estate, after which it passed on to his close friend, art dealer Maurice Joyant, and then descended to his heirs. (Estimate: $250,000 to $350,000).

Other featured works by Lautrec include The Chap Book, with an image of one of Lautrecs favorite haunts, the Irish-American Bar at 33 Rue Royal. Not mounted on linen, this example in its original paper state is basically in the same condition as the day it was printed ($50,000 to $75,000); Salon des Cent, a poster also referred to as La Passagère du 54 or Promenade en Yacht, inspired by a beautiful young woman Lautrec met in the summer of 1895 when he was traveling by ship to visit his mother. The image was created from a photograph taken aboard the ship ($50,000 to $75,000); and La Loge au Mascaron Dorè [The Box with the Gilded Mask], which offers the artists only head-on view of a theater box—all others were shown from the side. This example is the works first state, which was printed in a run of only 100, with very wide margins, signed and numbered by the artist ($40,000 to $60,000).

Among the Mucha highlights in the collection are an exquisite 1896 image for Job rolling papers, which features the long, luxuriant tendrils of a young womans hair intertwining with the smoke from her cigarette, a recurring motif in Muchas posters ($20,000 to $30,000); Zodiac, 1896, an example of the full maturity of the artists style, with every one of his signature design elements represented, this is the original version of the image, published as a calendar by Champenois ($15,000 to $20,000); Reverie, 1897, one of Mucha's most popular designs, this version with no text was sold to collectors and connoisseurs ($15,000 to $20,000); and a previously unknown variant of the Times of the Day, a calendar used to advertise a Parisian store specializing in signs and window shades ($12,000 to $18,000).

Notable works by Mucha among the material from other consignors are the celebrated Bières de la Meuse, 1897, considered a classic in its own time ($30,000 to $40,000); Monaco, Monte-Carlo, a lush and symbolic image, 1897 ($20,000 to $30,000); and Flirt, a romantic advertisement for Lefevre-Utile biscuits, 1899 ($8,000 to $12,000).

Belgian Art Nouveau is represented by a small run of works by Privat Livemont, including his masterpiece Absinthe Robette, Brussels, 1896 ($12,000 to $18,000); and Adolphe Crespins poster for the famous architect and designer Paul Hankar, Brussels, 1894 ($8,000 to $12,000).

Desirable Italian posters include Leonardo Bistolfis Prima Esposizione Internazionale dArte Decorativa Moderna, Turin, 1902, depicting muses dancing in a field ($10,000 to $15,000); and Giovanni Matalonis La Tribuna Roma, for a Rome newspaper, 1897 ($4,000 to $6,000).

The auction also includes several works by Jules Cheret, among them Palais de Glace, depicting elegant ice skaters, Paris, 1896 ($12,000 to $18,000), and a set of four panels representing The Arts, a triumph of color lithography ($40,000 to $60,000); Théophile-Alexandre Steinlens Lait Pur Stérilisé, 1894, featuring his signature cats ($20,000 to $30,000); Maurice Biaiss La Maison Moderne, 1900, promoting a store devoted to the Art Nouveau finery of the day ($8,000 to $12,000); and two of OGalops posters for Michelin picturing the iconic Bibendum, aka the Michelin Man, Nunc est Bibendum / Le Pneu Michelin Boit lObstacle, circa 1898 ($6,000 to $9,000), and Le Coup de la Semelle Michelin, 1913 ($5,000 to $7,500).

Rounding out the sale are works by Cappiello, Grasset and Pal. There are examples from the German Secession; American works by Bradley; and posters promoting champagne, chocolate, and much more.

- Though not as famous as the Nazca Lines and Geoglyphs, those at nearby Palpa are perhaps equally intriguing. Made by the Paracas culture possibly as much as 1000 years prior to the Nazca Lines, there are more than 1600 Palpa Lines and Geoglyphs. We'll be visiting these in October: (see above link).
