Belize: History & Culture

Belize. It’s a place where life slows down.
Find out more at:

Walking through this Central American country is like walking through time. From its glittering shores to its dense rainforests, people have lived here for thousands of years.

The earliest people to settle in Belize were the Mayans, in around 1500BC. Their two thousand year-old temples still stand today, waiting for you explore them Indiana-Jones style.

Today, Belize is a vibrant and exciting mix of backgrounds and cultures.

These English-speaking towns are relaxed and friendly, but there’s no urgency or stress here. It’s a diverse explosion of colour and joy. A place where just going to the market can bring a smile to your face.

This diversity is reflected in the country’s cuisine that bursts with taste and flavour. With Mayan, Caribbean and Mexican influences, food is a way of life here, and wandering the streets can be a culinary adventure.

In the more rural parts of Belize, you can experience the food of the Mayas, and learn how to make the best chocolate you will ever eat.

Organic chocolate and bananas are all part of a blossoming food economy and travel experience.

Belize is changing quickly. Its economy and accessibility is growing, and it’s becoming a dream destination for visitors looking for reef, rainforest, and fascinating culture.

But no matter what you are looking for, it’s safe to say that Belize offers the fun side of life.

Belize and the Maya History

Although Belize's Maya occupation began as early as 1500 BC, it was during the Classic period of 250 AD to 900 AD that the population is thought to have exceeded one million people. Archaeological remains of the ancient Maya include pottery, skeletons, stelae, and tall palaces, temples, and ceremonial centers.

As my time in Placencia, Belize continued, I headed out to get some breakfast and learn how Mayan chocolate is made with my friend at Taste Belize!

???????? Grenada Travel Series:
???????? Taste Belize:

DE’TACH: Here, I tried a Belizean breakfast, fry jacks! Mine was stuffed with scrambled eggs, refried beans, ham, and bacon. We also had traditional non-stuffed fry jacks and Johnny cakes.

MAYAN VILLAGE: At this Mayan village, they have over 3000 trees on a 10-acre plot. Belize grows some of the best cacao in the world!

CHE’IL MAYAN CHOCOLATE FACTORY: At this local chocolate factory, I learned how to grind cacao nibs into a chocolate paste, make chocolate bars, and even tried a cocoa drink and a “chocolate martini!”

SOUTHERN HIGHWAY SNACKS & CAFÉ: Here, I had an amazing chicken tamale with some habanero salsa. It was inexpensive but flavorful and made for a great snack
