MOST CHARMING CITY IN EUROPE? (BRUGES, BELGIUM TOUR) | Eileen Aldis

Bruges, Belgium might just be the most charming city in Europe. If you closed your eyes and imagined a picturesque, fairytale, travel-back-in-time, absolutely breath-taking European city I'd guess that Bruges is pretty close to what's in your head. It's what European vacation dreams are made of. A veritable time capsule of medieval architecture, It's easy to understand why it's a UNESCO World Heritage City. It is rare to see so many streets of buildings all so well preserved. Walking around is like being transported back in time and history here is on another level. This town hall? It was the seat of government for more than six hundred years. This old hospital? It's been a hospital since the 1100s (and only stopped in the 1970s). The reason why Bruges is so well preserved has a twist: the city was too poor to renovate and rebuild. Bruges has experienced periods of great wealth, great poverty, and great wealth. During the down times, citizens didn't have the cash to make 'improvements' to their houses and to this scarcity we owe a great deal! Ironically, the current citizens of Bruges benefit from their forebears' inability to knock things down and rebuild. Bruges is now a huge draw for tourists from around the world who flock to see the same buildings people were too poor to change. Huzzah! This is why I love history!

Our day in Bruges started at the Folklore Museum. It's only 4 Euro and you can get a nice overview of life in the city in the 19th and 20th centuries. Don't forget to look for the black cat who lives there. He's rare to see and is one of a long line of black cats who call the museum home. We then walked (you can walk everywhere) to the Burg Square where you'll find the Stadhuis (town hall) and a little further on is the Grote Markt. The latter is the main square where you'll find see the Belfry (Belfort) and dozens of tourists. Bruges is known for two things: an abundance of beauty and an abundance of tourists seeking it. But no one cares because you're so stunned at the charming city around you. We walked on to the Church of Our Lady where the altar piece is a Michelangelo sculpture of the Madonna and Child. Made of Carrara marble, it's been stolen twice and is now safe again to view at the church. Across the street is Sint-Janshospitaal - the one that was a hospital from the 1100s to the 1970s. Now you'll find religious art and - my favourite - examples of old ambulances. A visit here makes you really appreciate modern medicine. It started to rain and we were getting hungry so we headed to the Friet Museum (Fry Museum). How could we visit Belgium without doing a deep dive into the history of fries?! We wanted to find out why so many people mistakenly call them 'French fries' - we also wanted to eat fries. Check and check. It stopped raining so we ended the Bruges tour by boarding a river cruise because there are parts of the city only visible from the water. I'd definitely recommend a boat ride if you're visiting Bruges - it's relaxing and offers a unique perspective not seen by other means. We absolutely loved visiting Bruges and hope you enjoyed this visit to the jewel of Belgium.

BRUGES BELGIUM ???????? - The Most Beautiful Romantic Fairytale Evening Walk in Belgium in 8K

Burges Belgium a Romantic Fairytale Evening Walk in 8K , Bruges is one of the best preserved medieval towns in the world. It’s incredible how vast is it’s perfectly intact medieval area. You can just keep on walking and turn into any small cobbled lane or little square – and there is just more and more of beauty and history all around. It’s extremely lovely during the day, but in the night it turns into pure fairytale. Honestly, Bruges was one of my best travel experiences ever.

Historic Centre of Brugge, Belgium - World Heritage Journeys

Bruges' golden age may have been from the 12th to 15th centuries—when it was a busy trading port—yet this medieval city remains one of the world's most beautiful culture hubs. Laden with Gothic architecture and home to early Flemish painters, it is a city that has captured hearts for centuries.

Inscribed as a UNESCO site in 2000, Bruges is an outstanding example of an architectural ensemble, illustrating significant stages in the commercial and cultural fields in medieval Europe.

Welcome back dear scene walker.
Have you heard of the Belgian city Bruges (Brugge)?
If not, it is rich in fascinating history and one of the top tourist sites in Belgium.
The famous movie In Bruges was also filmed here.
The historic city center is a prominent UNESCO World Heritage Site.
It's the capital and largest city of West Flanders and the 6th most populous city in Belgium (118,500).
Bruges, together with Amsterdam and St Petersburg, is sometimes referred to as the Venice of the North.
To learn more about the fascinating past, we have to go back to the very beginning and the Golden age.
The name Brugge appears for the first time in the 9th century, derived from the Old Germanic word 'brugj', meaning 'to moor'.
The city is connected to the North Sea via a series of tidal channels.
It was the connection to the sea that made Bruges the trading city.
Bruges received city rights in the year 1128.
The presence of the Flemish counts made the city a fortified and powerful political stronghold.
In the 13th century, Bruges was the leading trade center of Northwestern Europe.
The world's first stock exchange was founded in Bruges.
This success continued and in the 15th century Bruges experienced its golden age.
Bruges became known worldwide for its trade in wool and cloth.
Bruges was also known for its high-quality lace fabric, a specialty that was only affordable for the wealthy.
Numerous famous painters and other fine arts flourished during the Golden Age.
Many of the prominent churches, the unique nation houses and the town hall were also completed.
In 1302, the Bruges Matins (massacre) took place against the French, leading to the famous Franco-Flemish Battle of the Golden Spurs.
The history of Bruges contains many battles, including numerous battles with another prominent Flemish city, Ghent.
Unfortunately, the tide turned towards the end of the 15th century, with the sudden death of the beloved mistress, Mary of Burgundy.
To make matters worse, Bruges' connection to the sea silted up, after which the city of Antwerp rapidly gained in importance.
Bruges never recovered and went through centuries of impoverishment, long eras of war and regime changes.
It is important to note that the city was spared from destruction during WW1 and WW2.
The resurgence of fame returned at the end of the 19th century, entering the era of tourism.
bruges became known as the mysterious place that was once the center of the world.
Thanks for watching and hope to see you in the next scene.

Europes Most Beautiful Places To Visit | Bruges Belgium Walking Tour | 4K UHD 60FPS |20 JANUARY 2022

Brugge is an outstanding example of a medieval historic settlement, which has maintained its historic fabric as this has evolved over the centuries, and where original Gothic constructions form part of the town’s identity. As one of the commercial and cultural capitals of Europe, Brugge developed cultural links to different parts of the world. It is closely associated with the school of Flemish Primitive painting.
The main iconic places in the city include Basilica of the Holy Blood, Beguinage (an active monastery of women- beguines), the whole historical part of the city headed by the Belfort Tower. One can’t also miss the Sint-Janshuis Mill, Jan van Eyck Square, Prinsenhof Palace, Brugse Vrije (a building at the Groenerei canal), and the Hospital of St. John which is more than 800 years old.
What should a tourist do in Bruges?
Stand in the very heart of the Markt square (it is also known as the market square) and admire the splendor of the Medieval town. This place had been hosting executions, fairs, concerts for several centuries.
Enjoy the sound of the clanging of forty-seven bells that ring every 60 minutes from the tall bell chamber with a clock Belfry of Bruges. It’s a real symbol of the city! The chime will reach your ears in any central part of the city.
Be brave enough to overcome 366 stairs worth the marvelous view of the city from the observation tower. It was used for detecting various catastrophes in the city. Nowadays, it’s happy to meet all the guests for the demonstration of the old Bruges from its observation deck.
Admire and go into raptures over the renowned “Madonna of Bruges” by the great Michelangelo. The sculpture is located in the Church of Our Lady. The tower of the church is 115 meters in height and is a real decoration itself.
Stroll along the Quay of the Rosary (Rozenhoedkaai) breathing in the inimitable odor. Take pictures of beautiful places that are permanent decorations of Bruges’ postcards.
Count how many examples of architectural styles are on the Burg Square (we bet there’s not less than five!)
Watch the process of netting real lace at Kant Centrum which is located nearby the Museum of Folk Life. You can stay for a workshop if you want. Lace is one of the important symbols of Bruges.
Learn all the secrets of brewing during your tour to Half Moon. It’s one of the oldest centers of producing the favorite beverage of all Belgians.
Admire the elegance of the St.Sebastian's Archers Guild building, St. Anne’s Church, the Provinciaal Hof, and other city attractions.
Confess your love at the Bonifacius Bridge, over the city lights reflecting in the water. It’s considered to be the most romantic place in Europe.
Experience what it feels like to be a citizen of the Medieval town and take a ride in a horse-driven carriage along narrow streets of Bruges. You can order this tour in the historical center of the city.
There is a lot to discover in Bruges, and it is best to plan your visit for at least 2-3 days. Most of the major highlights can be reached by foot. There are many guided walking tours available, as well as bicycle tours. Boat tours are also very popular, and provide a different view of the mysterious canals. If you are feeling particularly romantic, you can take a ride in a horse-drawn carriage. If you want to travel a bit faster, you can take a minibus tour with expert commentary. Finally, there are few experiences that rival a hot-air balloon tour above Bruges.

To make the most of your visit, pick up a copy of the official 'Bruges City Guide' - which gives you all the insider's tips on the best places to visit both in and around Bruges. It provides you with some excellent self-guided walking tours that feature the highlights of the World Heritage inscribed sections of the city. Updated every year, the guide is available in the visitor information centre.

BELGIUM: Bruges (Brugge), medieval city

Bruges (Flemish: Brugge) is the capital and largest city of the province of West Flanders in the Flemish Region of Belgium.

Along with a few other canal-based northern cities, such as Amsterdam and St Petersburg, it is sometimes referred to as the Venice of the North. Bruges has a significant economic importance, thanks to its port, and was once one of the world's chief commercial cities.

Bruges has most of its medieval architecture intact, making it one of the best preserved medieval towns/cities in Europe. The historic centre of Bruges has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000. Many of its medieval buildings are notable, including the Church of Our Lady, whose brick spire reaches 115.6 m (379.27 ft), making it the world's second highest brick tower/building. The sculpture Madonna and Child, which can be seen in the transept, is believed to be the only of Michelangelo's sculptures to have left Italy within his lifetime.

Bruges' most famous landmark is its 13th-century belfry, housing a municipal carillon comprising 47 bells. The city still employs a full-time carillonneur, who gives free concerts on a regular basis.
