France has vetoed United Nations Security Council resolutions that would affirm Comorian sovereignty over the island. The Comoros or Comoros form a volcanic archipelago off the southeast coast of East Africa, east of Mozambique and northwest of Madagascar. The volcanic islands cover a total area of 2,034 square kilometers. The island of Mayotte is still the oldest above sea level. Grande Comore is the youngest of the islands and is still actively volcanic.
According to mythology, a djinn dropped a jewel which formed a large circular blaze. This then became the Karthala volcano which created the island of Grande Comore. It is officially called the Union of the Comoros. It is an archipelago country in the Indian Ocean at the northern end of the Mozambique Channel off the eastern coast of East Africa. It borders Madagascar and Mayotte to the southeast, the Seychelles to the northeast, Tanzania to the northwest, and Mozambique to the west. Its capital and largest city is Moroni and its currency is the Comorian franc (KMF).
Comorian, plus a Swahili dialect, is the dominant native language. In written form, it is transcribed into Arabic which is the second mother tongue. French is the main language of official business and the language of instruction in schools. Surprisingly, less than half of the population speaks French. It is mainly spoken in urban areas and among the educated elite. However, learning a few words in Comorian will be useful to you.
Moroni is the capital of Comoros. It is the largest city, federal capital and seat of government of the Comoros. “Moroni” translated means “heart of fire.” This could be due to its proximity to Mount Karthala. Moroni is also derived from “mroni” which means “by the river” in the Shingazidja language, which is the only language spoken on the island of Grande Comore. Moroni has an old Arab town resembling the Arabic architecture of Zanzibar. It is located at the southern end of Grande Comore with a population of 50,000 people. Arab traders found it around 10 AD. Moroni is a port city with a small harbor. The main exports processed there are coffee, vanilla, cocoa and essential oils used in perfumery.
Two types of marriages are common in the Comoros; the Little Wedding and the Big Wedding. The small wedding is an ordinary Islamic wedding.
The Grand Marriage generally must take place to obtain a certain social status. It is often a week or two of celebrations between the months of July and September. However, preparations can take around 6 months or up to 10 years. As tradition dictates, your big wedding should cost more than the big wedding of your previous relative or friend. This can cost up to 20,000 euros. Comorians therefore save over time and spend lavishly.
During the wedding period, families progress through an array of processions, live music, meals and intricate, well-choreographed dances. Each city, island and region of the Comoros organizes the Grand Wedding a little differently. However, it is a guarantee that there will be a rich and ornate tapestry of symbolic rituals, evoking various elements of the island. On the main island of Comoros, a man who has not had a grand marriage is excluded from political power and local decision-making.
There are two main musical genres found on the island; Traditional Twarab and Comorian music. Zanzibar taarab music is the most influential musical genre on the island. Sambec, Mohammed Hassan, Chamsia Sagafo and Belle Lumière are the main Taarab artists. Music like Sega music from Mauritius and Réunion is also popular.
The Comorian national anthem was indeed composed by the modern musician Abou Chihabi. He is known for his variety of Pan-African music tinged with reggae. The violin is the most frequent accompaniment of taarab music. Other Comorian instruments include the óud, the ndzendze, the gabusi and the msondo drum. Comorian songs and dances are mainly accompanied by local ngoma drums. The Spanish guitar arrived in the Comoros with French settlers.
Comorian cuisine is strongly influenced by Arab and French influences. The sauces are usually spiced with cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and sometimes vanilla poured over rice dishes.
Coconut milk is an important ingredient as well as a drink. Traditional African foods such as cassava, plantain and bananas are also popular. A typical Comorian meal will include meat, fish, goat or beef.

Welcome to Kids adventures in Africa channel. This week we explore a tiny island nation known for its perfumes, humongous scary fish and lots of lava action. Welcome to the beautiful Comoros Islands.
The Comoros is an archipelago of volcanic islands off the east coast of Africa. It lies in the warm Indian Ocean waters between Mozambique and Madagascar.
The name Comoro comes from the Arabic word for “moon” but the residents call their country Masiwa, which means “the Islands”. The weather here is typical island climate - tropical and humid.
Moroni is the capital city. The name means the heart of the fire. And it's so named because the cityi sits at the foot of Mount Karthala, an active volcano that erupts once every decade. Due to volcanic activity, the islands have no indegenous mammals or reptiles except for bat's.
But what it lacks in mammals it more than makes up for in sea life. The Comoros host the largest population of coelacanths in the world. This rare and poisonous fish can grow up 2metres long. Comorians call it kombessa and have traditionally used its rough, tough scales as sandpaper, for roughening bicycle tyres when mending a puncture.
The reefs surrounding the Comoro Islands, especially those of the Mohéli National Park, are among the most vibrant in the world. Green turtles, dolphins, manta rays, rock lobsters, and seasonal humpback whales are very common.

Most Comorians are farmers and close to 2 thirds of the population live in rural areas. Their cuisine consists mainly of seafood, rice, cassava, and coconuts
Some people call the Comoros the perfume Islands. And it's a well deserved nickname. The Comoros Islands are the world's primary producer of Ylang Ylang. Ylang Ylang is the main ingredient in many world famous perfumes such as Chanel no.5.
Along with perfumes, the Comoros is also known for producing aromatic spices like cloves cardammon nutmeg and vanilla. It's the world's 2nd largest producer of vanilla after Madagascar.
The trees of the island are also aromatic. Especially the highly valued sandalwood tree which Comorians grind into a paste called m'sinndanu. And apply on their faces as sunscreen.

Panagia is a very small village in decay which is close to the bigger village of Moroni on the island of Crete. In the village only a few farmers remain but the middle age buildings are still beautifully preserved although some buildings are ruins nowadays. The village of Panagia lies in the southern hills of the Psiloritis mountain and the farmers produce wine, olive oil and the Cretan spirit Raki.

The Comoros, officially the Union of the Comoros, is an archipelago country made up of three islands in southeastern Africa, located at the northern end of the Mozambique Channel in the Indian Ocean. Its capital and largest city is Moroni. The religion of the majority of the population and the official religion of the state is Sunni Islam. The Comoros proclaimed their independence from France on July 6, 1975. A member of the Arab League, they are the only country in the Arab world located entirely in the southern hemisphere. It is a member state of the African Union, the International Organization of La Francophonie, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the Indian Ocean Commission. The country has three official languages: Shikomori, French and Arabic.
The Comoros are made up of Ngazidja (Grande Comore), Mwali (Mohéli) and Ndzwani (Anjouan), three major islands of the Comoros archipelago, as well as numerous minor islets. The islands are officially known by their Comorian language names, although international sources still use their French names (shown in parentheses above). The capital and largest city, Moroni, is located in Ngazidja. The archipelago is located in the Indian Ocean, in the Mozambique Channel, between the African coast (closest to Mozambique and Tanzania) and Madagascar, without land borders.
With 1,659 km2, it is one of the smallest countries in the world. The Comoros also claims 320 km2 of territorial seas. The interiors of the islands vary from steep mountains to low hills.
Ngazidja is the largest in the Comoros archipelago, with an area of 1,024 km2. It is also the newest island, and its soil is therefore rocky. The island's two volcanoes, Karthala (active) and La Grille (dormant), and the lack of good ports are distinctive features of its relief. Mwali, with its capital Fomboni, is the smallest of the four main islands. Ndzwani, whose capital is Mutsamudu, has a distinctive triangular shape caused by three mountain ranges – Shisiwani, Nioumakele and Jimilime – emanating from a central peak, Mount Ntingui at 1,575m.
