Granada Vacation Travel Video Guide

Travel video about destination Granada in Spain.
Since the 7th century B.C., Iberians, Romans and West Goths had settled in Granada but it was during the Arab rule that the city first gained prominence. Sixty thousand Muslims once lived in the old Moorish city complex on the hill above the ancient district of Albaicin.

Granada has a truly unique and captivating atmosphere, one that has inspired poets, musicians and countless travelers from all over the world. A lively and contemporary university city, at the same time it is the guardian of an historic past that draws in a multitude of tourists keen to experience its special charm.

In the narrow valleys between the Alhambra and Albaicin Hills, the gentle River Darro makes its age-old journey toward the city centre. The houses along the riverside have been restored to a high standard with typical wooden balconies, decorated façades and barred windows. The Banos Arabes are ancient Arab baths that date back to the 11th century.

The mighty La Alcazaba Fortress rises up from the top of a hill and is separated from the rest of the Alhambra by huge walls. The city extends to the plains below and in the background are the snow-covered mountain peaks of the Sierra Nevada. The huge Torre De La Vela (Watchtower) is the highest point of the complex and was the first building of the Nasrids Dynasty.

The Alhambra served as military headquarters, administrative centre and royal residence until the expulsion of the Moors by Christian militia. The interior of the Alhambra is like a hidden treasure that lies expectantly beyond plain red walls, waiting to be discovered. The most famous of the courtyards is the Lion Yard of which the well and ornate arcades took several years to complete.

The fiery south of Spain is a fantasy world situated between Europe and Africa. A land of passion and ancient culture, Granada is its shining pearl set amid the evocative landscape of Andalusia.

Palma De Mallorca (Spain) Vacation Travel Video Guide

is the capital of an island in the Mediterranean Sea with the same name. It is a city with a long and exciting history. The Cathedral sits high above the Parque De La Mar. La Seu, the imposing cathedral,.is one of the most beautiful sacred buildings in the world as well as being one of the most magnificent gothic buildings on the island. Sandstone from Santanyi gives the masonry its warm, honey-yellow colour. Centuries of continuous construction have resulted in many artistic styles being kept in the building.

In the Barri Gòtic Old Town, which has changed little over the centuries, real treasures can be found hidden in the labyrinth of narrow streets. From the outside, the aristocratic buildings are mostly dilapidated, and one can only imagine the former elegant everyday life. Through a small garden behind a wall, a path leads to an Arabic bath. The Banys Àrabs are considered to be the only completely preserved Mallorcan buildings of the Moorish period.

To the south, adjacent to the cathedral, is the PALAU DE L´ALMUDAINA, the King's Palace. The history of this palace reflects the city’s history. Initially it was built as the residence for the Moorish emirs. However after the city was taken back from the Moors in 1281 King JAUME The Second had the palace rebuilt in Gothic style. A fortified complex of sturdy walls with towers and airy arcades.

The mighty Castell De Bellever, the Castle of the Beautiful View, overlooks the harbour area and the city. King Jaume The First commissioned this fortress at the beginning of the 14th century, shortly after the conquest of the island and so one of the most important fortifications in Europe was built. Suitable for defence with watchtowers, ramparts and ditches. The Pearl of the Mediterranean has survived and stands today as a proud echo of the past.

Scotland (Europe) Vacation Travel Video Guide

Scotland, located in the north of the United Kingdom, is a fascinating and atmospheric land. A land of Celtic myths and legends with green hills, barren highlands, mysterious lakes and mighty castles. In the centre of the capital the impressive Edinburgh Castle crowns the hard basalt cone of an extinct volcano, the historic heart of the nation. The beauty of the dense forests and hills of the Trossachs was made famous by author, Sir Walter Scott, in the nineteenth century. It is the most scenic region in central Scotland and possesses grandiose, wild and romantic scenery. The remote Loch Katrine brings to mind Sir Walter Scott’s poem, The Lady Of The Lake. On the Firth Of Lorne is Kilmartin Glen one of the most important prehistoric regions in Scotland. Here, standing-stone, three metre high monoliths are scattered across meadows with grazing sheep. The Bronze Age megalithic grave mounds and stone circles can be seen from Duchraigaig Cairn. Across the north runs the Great Glen with Loch Linnhe, Lochy and Ness marking its course which passes through some amazing landscapes. In Fort William Train Station, the Jacobite is awaiting its passengers. The huge black monster is an impressive sight. Slowly, the nostalgic train moves off and begins its journey on one of the most beautiful railway routes in the world. The history of Glenfarclas is as colourful as the whisky of the same name. It is the story of the Grant Family and their distillery. ‘Scottish Gold’ must be stored for at least three years until the traditional taste of single malt whisky is produced but it can often be left to mature for between twelve and fifty years. Scotland is like a land from an ancient and historic time whose real treasure is its natural, rugged scenery!

Edinburgh (Scotland) Vacation Travel Video Guide

Vacation travel video about destination Edinburgh in Scotland.
In the centre of the old town, Edinburgh Castle sits atop the basalt cone of a long-extinct volcano. It is the most visited castle in Scotland and still guarded by soldiers but it is now mainly tourists who storm the defiant rock. Northumbrian king, Edwin, commanded the castle to be built in the seventh century A.D., the castle on the hill, Edinburgh. The Royal Mile leads from the mighty fortress, downwards, a sloping road from which narrow streets branch off. Just off the upper Royal Mile is the church and cemetery of Greyfriars with its many historical and atmospheric tombs. Its cemetery became well known due to two Irishmen who exhumed newly-buried corpses in 1827 in order to sell them to the local anatomical institute. The Royal Mile eventually narrows and ends at the Palace Of Holyrood House, official Scottish residence of the British Queen. The East Princes Street Gardens are the city’s green paradise with large trees, well-manicured lawns and the massive Sir Walter Scott Monument. This city of poets and culture is one of the oldest urban regions in Europe... and home of the Scottish nation.

Tenerife (Spain) Vacation Travel Video Guide

Vacation travel video about destination Tenerife in Spain.
Tenerife is the largest of the seven Canary Islands, captivating, mysterious and vibrant, the ‘island of eternal spring’. It is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and located just three hundred kilometres from the African continent.Santa Cruz De Tenerife, north east of the island, is its capital, port and commercial metropolis. The Capitania General, which once served as the seat of the island’s military governors, recalls the time of General Franco’s rule. In addition to the Canary’s flora and fauna, the abundant remains of an extinct culture is particularly interesting, the islands’ indigenous people, the Guanches. Well-preserved mummies, which have been found in numerous caves, document their mummification ritual. Puerto De La Cruz is located on the splendid north coast, a city where both old and new combine and with a fishing and harbour district that were founded around five hundred years ago. With its Neo Classical bell tower, the Francia De La Peña Church dominates among palms, oleander and hibiscus. Teide National Park contains solidified boulders of lava and pumice fields that originated from volcanic activity. A huge crater formed around five hundred thousand years ago when the primal Teide Volcano erupted repeatedly. An island born of fire and water where remarkable weather, mysterious volcanoes and deep blue sea determine everyday life and where vegetation and moon landscapes capture the attention. Tenerife is most certainly the priceless pearl of the Canary Islands.

Alhambra Vacation Travel Video Guide

Travel video about destination Alhambra in Spain.
Built during the 13th and 14th centuries, the Alhambra is a group of buildings that overlook Granada. The finest example of Moorish architecture, it was a magnificent citadel for the Moorish kings of Spain. When the Moors were expelled from Spain the citadel was mutilated but in the 19th century it was restored to its former glory.Close by is the Palacio Del Generalife, the summer residence of the Moorish rulers the grounds of which contain fabulous gardens. The Moors were a nomadic North African people consisting mainly of Arabs and Berbers. They invaded Spain in the 8th century and were expelled from it in the early 17th century, prior to which most had been exterminated during the Spanish Inquisition. Yet their contribution to Spain in terms of medicine, art, architecture and science, was immeasurable. A people of commerce, learning, imagination and panache who, like so many of their kind throughout history, were eventually persecuted to near extinction.

Palacio Real Vacation Travel Video Guide

Travel video about destination Palacio Real in Spain.
The charming older part of Madrid is dominated by numerous monumental and magnificent buildings including, most notably, the wonderful Palacio Real. A harmonious and elegantly designed facade opens onto the Plaza De Oriente. Izola (Slovenia) Vacation Travel Video Guide

Vacation travel video about destination Izola in Slovenia.
Izola is an historic city on the Slovenian Adria coast. The idyllic old town and atmospheric, narrow streets date back to Roman times. However, from 1280 to 1797, Venice ruled the old fishing city and characterised its appearance. Thus the famous Venetian-inspired Palazzo Besenghi Degli Ughi was created, a Baroque palace built at the end of the eighteenth century. The Big Square at the old harbour is framed by several picturesque buildings. It was there that the colourful life of a harbour city took place under the rule of Venice. After the fall of the Serenissima followed the Habsburgs. In the new town with its beautiful buildings and small parks, a Mediterranean lifestyle is the order of the day and the time of being part of Military Zone B and Yugoslavia is now a thing of the past. Izola has blossomed once again and its long history has been preserved for future generations.

The 3 Pearls Of Andalusia Vacation Travel Video Guide

Along the Rio Guadalquivir is Córdoba. Today the former caliph’s residence of the Omaiyad is a lively city with an historic past. In 152 B.C. the town was founded during the rule of Claudius Marcellu and it was then that the Roman conquerors named it Corduba. Later the town became the capital of the province of Baetica, the hot southern region of Spain. At the beginning of the 8th century the town was the headquarters of its recent conquerors, Arabian governors and emirs and even today the architectural influence of the Moors is visible. In the 10th century A.D. the town reached the zenith of its prosperity. It is believed that almost a million people once lived in the ‘Mecca of the West’. The Great Mosque, today's Mezquita, was extended and enlarged during that time. Marble, jaspis and granite columns decorate the beautiful interior of the mosque that contains eight hundred columns. The old city of Granada extends across three hills, Sacromonte, the world famous Alhambra and Abaicín, a once densely populated Moorish district with almost thirty mosques. For several centuries around sixy thousand Moors brought the city’s maze of alleys to life but only a few of the historic Islamic buildings and mosques have survived. Seville is today’s pulsating capital of Andalucia and is still strongly influenced by the brilliant architectural achievements of the Moors. In former times the Real Alcázar was the residence of the region’s Arabic rulers but most of its buildings were constructed during the reign of Peter The Cruel. Casa De Pilatos is one of the most beautiful palatial buildings in Seville. The residence of the Dukes of Medinacelli was built between 1492 and 1520 following a pilgrimage by one of the dukes to the Holy Land. On his return journey, following the same route that the first Marqués of Tarifa took through Italy, he brought back several valuable columns and fountains made of carrara marble that today adorn the beautiful exterior and gardens of the residence. The shoreline of the Guadalquivir River in the land of flamenco is full of life and joie de vivre. The true heart of Spain surely lies in Andalusia in the hot southern region of the Iberian Peninsula.

Andalusia Vacation Travel Video Guide

Travel video about destination Andalusia in Spain.
Andalusia, in southern Spain is a fantasy land situated between Europe and Africa. In Algarrobo, a white village close to the coast, time seems to have stood still and is a place of both inspiration and contemplation. Since Phoenician times, the earlier ‘Malaca’ was a busy trading port that was defended by the Gibralforo Castle. The Cathedral, also known as ‘La Manquita’, symbolizes a catholic victory on the former site of a mosque. On the edge of the city centre is the Moorish fortress of Alcazaba, that was once a fortified residence on the hills of Castillo. The second largest city in Andalusia also became known as the birthplace of its famous son, world famous artist Pablo Ruiz Picasso. Since the 1950s, the modern coastal resort of Torremolinos has attracted mass tourism with a numerous variety of huge hotel skyscrapers, bars and restaurants. In the hilly inland area of the Costa del Sol is the pretty white mountain village of Mijas. A small hilltop bullfight arena shines bright white along with the houses of the surrounding area. Marbella, the prima donna of the Costa del Sol, serves as a rendezvous for the stars of stage and screen and a leisure resort for the international jet set. Another short excursion into the mountains near the coast leads to Casares, a sleepy mountain village crowned by the ruins of a Moorish Castle. During the Roman Carthaginian Wars, Cadiz played an important role as a trading centre. After the Moors came the Normans and in 1262, the city fell into the hands of the Christian king, Alfonso. Dreamy harbor towns, cultural metropolises with a Moorish past, Christian buildings and white villages... Beauty in the Garden of Eden – that’s Andalusia!

Ruta Por Los Pueblos Blancos Vacation Travel Video Guide

Travel video about destination Ruta Por Los Pueblos Blancos in Spain.
The White Villages located along the Ruta Por Los Pueblos Blancos shine out of the landscape like a multitude of tiny pearls, an intriguing sight that captures the essence of Spain in the atmospheric simplicity of Andalusia. The Pueblos Blancos are of practical construction. Their thick walls protect against the heat of the sun and they always look new because each year they are treated to a new coat of whitewash. The mighty Castelar De La Frontera was built in the 12th century and the proud old fortress situated above Algeciras can still be admired today. Seventy tightly-packed houses are located within its walls and in 1971 its inhabitants left the Castillo and built a new village on the plains. Today, wooden shutters ensure a degree of privacy and for many centuries thick stone walls protected those who lived here from invasion. The route continues to Jimena De La Frontera where fertile pastures and large slopes with cork oaks and olive trees flank the roads. Ronda enjoys a unique location. It sits on a rock plateau above a steep 165 metre deep canyon. Both the Romans and the Moors, who were defeated by the catholic kings in 1485, left their traces in the city. Due to its location, Ronda was virtually impregnable during the early part of the Middle Ages thus it became one of the last Moorish bastions in Spain. The journey along the edge of the Sierra De Grazalema Nature Park features fertile pastures and lush meadows, overlooked by the peaks of the Penon Grande. The Pueblos look like white spots created by human hand, scattered across a green landscape. To experience the historic flavour of Spain, the Ruta Por Los Pueblos Blancos is well worth traversing!
