Taiwan's East Coast Treasure | Taroko National Park Road Trip

The east coast of Taiwan (台灣) is full of beautiful nature, including its most famous treasure Taroko National Park (太魯閣國家公園). You can visit here as a day trip from Taipei (台北) but it's worth giving yourself more time to enjoy the coastline, mountains, and natural beauty. We're taking a road trip from Hualien City (花蓮市) to Taroko Gorge (塔羅科峽谷), a narrow gorge made of marble.

Today’s travel vlog, we explored Taiwan's secret East Coast treasure by riding our first ever scooter through #Taroko National Park outside of #Hualien. This was one of our favorite days in 3 months of travel! Although scary at times, we loved our scooter tour through the amazing green mountains, finding hidden waterfalls, and hiking around cotton candy blue waters.

We hiked #Baiyung Trail, explore the Taifung Pagoda, and getting as many drone shots as possible on the most beautiful day we've had in #taiwan.

We hope you enjoyed and encouraged you to visit this amazing East Coast Treasure in Taiwan!

Thank you for watching!

Planning your own trip to Hualien? Add these to your itinerary!
1. Visit Taroko Gorge National Park - it is easily the highlight of Hualien and perfect for hiking and nature enthusiasts! (Featured in this video are the Zhuilu and Shakadong trails. As mentioned, you can apply for permits for the Zhuilu trail here:

Taroko National Park: Taiwan's Magnificent Natural Wonder in One Day | Taiwan Travel Vlog Part 2

We set out on an exciting journey from Taipei to Hualien to see the most beautiful park in Taiwan: Taroko National Park 太魯閣國家公園. Though our time in this city was limited to just a day, we couldn't pass up the chance to visit this spectacular gem. However, getting to the famous spots isn't easy. Public transportation options were limited, and most visitors opted for guided tours that we were too late for. Undeterred by the uncertainties, we decided to take a leap of faith, holding our train tickets close and venturing into the unknown.

Check out other videos in the series:

Have you visited Northern Taiwan?

Our day trip was only a success because of the warmth of the Taiwanese people again. Sometimes, the best memories come from stepping outside our comfort zone.

___________________________________

HUA LIEN 花莲 - 00:45
Hua Lien is known for its majestic views and the best way to experience this is to paraglide over the valley

00:58 - Taroko Gorge National Park 太魯閣國家公園
most people visit Taroko Gorge for good the plunging canyons flanked by marbled mountains. It’s essentially the Taiwanese Grand Canyon.

01:16 - Zhuilu Old Trail 錐麓古道
Zhui lu Old Trail was created by the indigenous people to connect their villages but today, it’s a slightly challenging walk. This trail allows you to have an amazing view of the canyon.

KEELUNG 基隆 - 01:51
A city full of ancient forts and colourful photo spots, Keelung is a charming port city in the northeastern part of Taiwan.

02:00 - Zhengbin Fishing Port 正濱漁港
This place has colourful houses and fishermen reeling in their loot for the day.

02:08 - Chaojing Park 潮境公園
originally a rubbish dumping ground, but has since been converted into an outdoor art museum.

02:27 - Peace Island Coastal Park 和平島海角樂園
The island park is a favourite amongst locals and you can find them swimming in the natural rock pools during the warmer summer months.

03:00 - Keelung Miaokou Night Market 基隆廟口夜市
Here you’ll find over 200 food stands selling everything from fresh seafood, to meat skewers.

In the middle of the year, the Taiwan International Balloon Festival is held for over 38 days in Taitung.

04:16 - Luye Highland
Head over to Luye where you’ll see a field of up to 30 different hot air balloons.

04:35 - Taimali Township 太麻里鄉
In Tai mali Mountain, depending on the month you visit, the sights here range from Cherry Blossoms to Wild Lilies, and sometimes Maple leaves.

Taichung is Taiwan’s second-largest city and is the gateway to the country’s mountainous regions.

Decommissioned in 2016, the red brick building was in fact the Old Taichung Railway station. It no longer serves as a railway station today but is now a train museum and exhibition space.

05:27 - Shenji New Village 審計新村
take a trip back to the 60s in this village. Today it houses cute cafes and craft stores that will easily take up half a day to explore.

05:52 - Taichung Second Market 台中第二市場店
This is one of the best places to get breakfast. Food vendors close as soon as they run out of food so breakfast is a good time to try the best of the lot.

TAIWAN'S EAST COAST - What to see

TAIWAN'S EAST COAST - What to see

The East Coast of Taiwan is often hailed as the most beautiful part of the island, and it's hard to argue against that claim. With its stunning beaches, excellent surfing spots, and multiple national parks, the East Coast offers a plethora of natural wonders and breathtaking landscapes.

In this video, we'll take you on a journey through some of the highlights of Taiwan's East Coast. We'll start with Taroko National Park, which happens to be our favorite national park on the entire island. Accessible from Hualien, you can reach Taroko National Park through various means of transportation, including public buses, scooter rentals, or even hiring a cab. If you're up for it, you can even stay overnight in the park by booking a room or pitching a tent. Once inside Taroko, be sure to explore the incredible cliffs that overlook the ocean. The views from there are absolutely awe-inspiring.

Next, we'll take you to the Dragon Bridge, also known as the eight-arch bridge at Sanxiantai. This bridge is truly one of a kind, designed in the shape of a dragon. The attention to detail in its construction is remarkable, and the bridge stands as a testament to the creativity and craftsmanship of its architects.

Throughout our month-long stay in Taiwan, we embarked on a road trip around the entire island, exploring both the popular tourist attractions and the lesser-known gems. Thanks to the wonderful people we met along the way, we were able to discover many off-the-beaten-path places that are not typically frequented by tourists.

In conclusion, our top recommendations for places to visit in Taiwan include Taipei, Liuqiu (known for its turtles), and Taroko National Park. Each of these destinations offers a unique and unforgettable experience. Check out the links provided to watch our videos showcasing these incredible places.

So, if you're planning a trip to Taiwan, make sure to include the East Coast in your itinerary. You won't be disappointed by the beauty and diversity that await you there.

FAQs
========================================
Q: How long did it take?
A: My trip was 14 days.

Q: Which airport should I arrive at?
A: Having travelled from the other side of the globe, I arrived at Taoyuan International Airport in Taipei. If travelling from Australia or Asia, there may be connecting flights to Kaohsiung International Airport on the south-west coast of Taiwan.

Q: How much did it cost?
A: You can see a cost breakdown of my trip at 12:37

Q: How did you pay for things or get local currency?
A: I just take money out from an ATM using my debit card. It has a small international transaction fee, but it’s minuscule if you only do it once or twice. You may be able to order foreign currency at better rates, but it’s not something I personally bothered with.

Q: Is it easy to find petrol stations?
A: Yes, you'll find one pretty much everywhere, including remote areas in the mountains! I always went with caution and ensured I had a full tank before entering remote areas, however to my shock, there were petrol stations, and even 7 Eleven stores in remote mountains! Just to be safe, I would highly recommend getting a full tank of petrol before going to the mountains.

Q: Which month did you go?
A: I visited mid November to early December and spent 14 days there.

Guide to Taiwan's Taroko National Park // Best Hiking Trails & Sites to See

Taroko National Park, in Northern Taiwan, is a great day trip from Taipei, or overnight trip if you're in the region.

While you can take a series of trains here, I’d definitely recommend hiring a driver.
It’s a three-hour drive, through a series of tunnels and the Taiwanese countryside.
Parking at the trailheads in the park is very difficult, so a driver will be able to drop you off and pick you up, without having to deal with the hassle of parking.

Taroko is famous for its gorges, and beautiful, blue rivers.
For American tourists who are used to back-country trails in national parks, Taroko might disappoint. You're mostly restricted to paved pathways, and there's really no access to the spring-fed rivers below.

The Shakadang Trail is one of the most popular hiking trails in Taroko. It was built for crews working on a hydroelectric power station in the 1940s.
Today, the trail is good for children and seniors since the walkway is mostly flat and shaded.

Farther into Taroko, you’ll come across a row of restaurants, run by indigenous people who live in the park. Across the street, you can climb up to the Buddhist temple built on the hillside.

Other spots to explore include the Tunnel of Nine Turns, which is completely paved, and gives visitors views of the river and gorge.

Swallow Grotto is another roadside hike above the gorge, featuring vertical marble canyon walls rising above bright blue water below.

The Buluowan Terrace Suspension Bridge spans 200 meters across the gorge, 150 meters above the river. It’s accessible to all, and gives sweeping views of the national park.

Taroko is also home to a shrine, dedicated to the men who died building the highway that runs through the park in the 1950s.

Outside the boundaries of Taroko, but still part of the national park, are the Qingshui Cliffs.
Sheer rock cliffs drop into the bright blue waters of the Pacific Ocean on the northeastern coast of Taiwan.

Overall, Taroko is a beautiful spot to visit in Taiwan. Still, for hikers it does leave you wanting a bit more of an adventure and access to the surrounding coastline, rivers, and mountains.
