The Gambia is the official name of the smallest West African country. Yes, there is the need to put a definite article ‘The’ in front of Gambia.
Gambia – referred to as the smiling coast of Africa – shares that ‘pleasure’ with ‘The Bahamas.’ An English language expert, David Crystal explained why ‘The Gambia’ is ‘The Gambia.’
In an interview with the BBC, Crystal disclosed that two reasons came to play in arriving at that official position.
The Portuguese who first explored the country named it after the river known as ‘The River Gambia.’ The Portuguese thus named it ‘The Gambia.’ [In Portuguese A Gâmbia] So when Britain took over, they maintained that name.
A year to the attainment of independence in 1964, the then Prime Minister officially sought the consent of the Permanent Committee on geographical names based in the UK to keep the official title of ‘The Gambia.’
The reason was because of Zambia, The Gambia didn’t want to be confused with their Southern African brothers, Zambia seeing that only the first alphabets in their names are different.
The Commission which looks after naming of geographical locations in the world accented to the request.

My first days in The Gambia: West Africa's Smiling Coast ????????
I visited Mainland Africa's smallest country, a West African nation known as The Smiling Coast with land borders entirely surrounded by Senegal. Popular with tourists for its beautiful beaches and friendly populace, I spent a week in the company of a friend who showed me things more interesting than the hotel resorts most visitors stick to which included Ghana Town and his family's impressive building projects such as an awe-inspiring mansion and luxurious apartment blocks!
Hope you enjoy part 1 of my Gambia adventure. Next up: I will explore the famous Serrekunda and wander through the black markets as well hunting for souvenirs to take home with me.

Gambia, West Africa, is just 6 hours flight from most EU airports and because the country operates on GMT tourists can avoid suffering from jet lag. The destination offers a cheaper alternative than the Caribbean destinations and there are 48 km of unspoiled white sandy beaches.
The Gambia which has been a popular holiday destination since the mid 1960's enjoys a sub-tropical climate.
Most tourists come during the winter months between October to February with a steady tailing off of visitors from March to May.

I have made it safely to Africa's smallest country on the mainland! It's called THE GAMBIA -- have you ever heard of it before?
This nation is completely surrounded by Senegal and the Atlantic Ocean on all sides, and it's appropriately nicknamed The Smiling Coast of Africa. Seriously, people smile at you from every angle here!
We've spent the past 2.5 days here and it's been a very interesting experience to say the least. I love the people and the nature -- they are both world class. But something doesn't feel right to me about the society, which I explain in this video.

Before deciding to go to The Gambia I didn't know a lot about. All I knew was that the country was surrounded by Senegal and they had an Atlantic coast line making it quite attractive for holiday makers.
It also had a reputation for being the hotspot for adult tourism as I choose to call it. Which is why I had to find somewhere in The Gambia where I could experience the true smiling coast of Africa.
