TRADITIONAL Japanese STREET FOOD Tour at Fushimi Inari Shrine | Kyoto, Japan

During my twelve incredible days exploring the Asian island nation of Japan in January of 2019, I absolutely fell in love with the country. The people, the culture, the gorgeous sites, and of course, the phenomenal food, captured my heart. It’s near the top of my list of my favorite destinations of all-time and I believe it’s a place everyone needs to experience at least once in their lifetime. Join me on my latest Japanese adventure!

My Film Making Kit ►

After arriving in Kyoto on the morning of my fourth day in Japan, I met up with my new friend and guide Kosuke, who took me on an incredible tour of Kyoto’s temples and an insanely delicious traditional Japanese street food tour at the Fushimi Inari Shrine! Come along with me as I begin my exploration of Kyoto and gorge on some of its best street food!

Kyoto is an ancient city that is steeped in history and tradition (it served as Japan’s capital for over 1,000 years from the 8th century to the 20th century), and that history and tradition can be seen at every turn. The moment I arrived, I was immediately blown away by how different Kyoto felt from the ultra-modern concrete jungle of Tokyo. Kyoto felt much quieter and much more traditional by comparison. There are roughly 2,000 temples in the city!

My tour began at Kōmyō-in, a sub-temple in the Tōfuku-ji Buddhist temple complex that was founded in 1391. The temple is famous for its Zen garden, maple trees, and cherry blossoms. It’s customary to take off your shoes when you enter any Japanese temple or apartment, so we did so and continued on to the Zen garden, which is covered in moss; contains lots of white gravel (which is raked weekly by the head monk); and has lots of large rocks jutting up from the moss. The rocks represent mountains and the white gravel symbolizes the ocean. You can’t step into the garden; you have to enjoy it from the wooden walkways of the temple.

Inside the temple are several rooms and photos of the temple hanging on the walls. Kosuke also took me to the praying hall, where the head monk reads from the Buddhist bible. The hall contains a statue of the Buddha and is beautiful!

Next, we headed off to get some breakfast at the food market near the Fushimi Inari Shrine, which is a very famous shrine that sees 7,000 visitors per day, including locals who pray for the prosperity of their businesses.

The aroma of the food in the market was amazing! I couldn’t wait to try it!

I started with takoyaki (500 Yen/$4.46), or octopus balls, which are made from a batter containing octopus, red ginger, and cabbage. It was hot, but so delicious with a soft, crème brûlée-like consistency inside, and had a nice takoyaki sauce and bonito flakes on top.

Next was a tofu steak (400 Yen/$3.57), which is tofu on a stick that’s pan-fried and is topped with wasabi, ponzu sauce, seaweed, and bonito flakes. I loved it, especially the texture of the bonito flakes and the flavor of the seaweed! So delicious!

We followed that with gyoza (300 Yen/$2.68 for 3 gyozas), or a type of Japanese potsticker, which was wrapped with chicken skin. It was the best gyoza I’ve ever had! The chicken skin was really fatty and changed the texture of the gyoza. It blew my mind! I followed that with a dried, fig-like fruit that was amazing as well.

As we continued through the market, I bought two Japanese masks (2,000 Yen each/$17.86 each) for my wall at home. We made our way toward the Fushimi Inari Shrine, and Kosuke told me that it became popular after the film “Memoirs of a Geisha” was filmed there.

The shrine’s most popular site is the 10,000 vermilion torii gates that straddle a network of trails going up the mountain. Each gate was donated by a Japanese businessman and is inscribed with the name of the businessman’s company and the date it was donated. The gates are gorgeous!

Next, I visited some miniature torii gates stacked in front of the holy rock, and picked up the good luck rock to see what kind of luck I would have! Let’s just say I hope it was wrong!

I hope you enjoyed my temple, shrine, and food tour of Kyoto! If you did, please give it a thumbs up, leave me a comment below, and subscribe to my channel for more awesome travel and food content!

LOCAL JAPANESE FOOD in Kyoto, Japan - Fushimi Inari Srine's FAMOUS food

Subscribe for more food and travel videos:
Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto, Japan is beautiful to explore. When you're here you must make sure to eat the Fushimi Inari food of kitsune udon and inari sushi. The shrine is dedicated to the god of rice and the messengers of the god are kitsune or foxes. It is said that the kitsune's favourite food is deep fried tofu skin in inari sushi and udon or soba so there are a few places near Fushimi Inari to sample inari and kitsune udon.

We ate at Oukujidokoro Inari restaurant, a couple of minutes walk from the station and located on the street on the way up to the shrine on the left.

Another snack to try besides the street food vendors that line the path leading up to Fushimi Inari shrine is the tofu soft serve. It's creamy and super tasty!

After visiting Fushimi Inari Shrine we head to Gion, Kyotos famous geisha district and then on to Ippudo Ramen for dinner.

We hope we've inspired you to eat and explore like a traveler, not a tourist. Subscribe to our food and travel channel for more Japanese food and travel videos.

Fushimi Inari-taisha (伏見稲荷大社) is the head shrine of the kami Inari, located in Fushimi-ku, Kyoto, Kyoto Prefecture, Japan. The shrine sits at the base of a mountain also named Inari which is 233 metres (764 ft) above sea level, and includes trails up the mountain to many smaller shrines which span 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) and take approximately 2 hours to walk up.

Inari was originally and remains primarily the kami of rice and agriculture, but merchants and manufacturers also worship Inari as the patron of business. Each of Fushimi Inari-taisha's roughly thousand torii was donated by a Japanese business.

Owing to the popularity of Inari's division and re-enshrinement, this shrine is said to have as many as 32,000 sub-shrines (分社 bunsha) throughout Japan.

The shrine became the object of imperial patronage during the early Heian period. In 965, Emperor Murakami decreed that messengers carry written accounts of important events to the guardian kami of Japan. These heihaku were initially presented to 16 shrines, including the Inari Shrine.

From 1871 through 1946, Fushimi Inari-taisha was officially designated one of the Kanpei-taisha (官幣大社), meaning that it stood in the first rank of government supported shrines.

The earliest structures were built in 711 on the Inariyama hill in southwestern Kyoto, but the shrine was re-located in 816 on the request of the monk Kūkai. The main shrine structure was built in 1499. At the bottom of the hill are the main gate (楼門, rōmon, tower gate) and the main shrine (御本殿, go-honden). Behind them, in the middle of the mountain, the inner shrine (奥宮, okumiya) is reachable by a path lined with thousands of torii. To the top of the mountain are tens of thousands of mounds (塚, tsuka) for private worship.

The highlight of the shrine is the rows of torii gates, known as Senbon Torii. The custom to donate a torii started to spread since the Edo period (1603 – 1868) to get a wish to become true or to thank for a wish that became true. Along the main path there are around 1,000 torii gates.

Foxes (kitsune), regarded as the messengers, are often found in Inari shrines. One attribute is a key (for the rice granary) in their mouths.

Unlike most Shinto shrines, Fushimi Inari-taisha, in keeping with typical Inari shrines, has an open view of the main object of worship (a mirror).

A drawing in Kiyoshi Nozaki's Kitsune: Japan's Fox of Mystery, Romance and Humor in 1786 depicting the shrine says that its two-story entry gate was built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi.

The shrine draws several million worshipers over the Japanese New Year, 2.69 million for 3 days in 2006 reported by the police, the most in western Japan.

The shrine is just outside the Inari Station on the Nara Line of the West Japan Railway Company (JR), a five-minute ride from Kyoto Station. It is a short walk from Fushimi-Inari Station on the Main Line of the Keihan Electric Railway.

The shrine is open 24 hours with both the approach to the shrine and the Honden (本殿 main hall) itself illuminated all night. There is no entrance fee.

In the approach to the shrine are a number of sweet shops selling tsujiura senbei (辻占煎餅), a form of fortune cookie dating at least to the 19th century, and which are believed by some to be the origin of the Chinese-American fortune cookie.

Kyoto Street Food at Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto, Japan!

Right outside of Fushimi Inari in Kyoto, Japan is a whole alley of Japanese street food! After all those steps at Fushimi Inari, come hungry!

Fushimi Inari-taisha is a popular tourist attraction, so it makes perfect sense that there's a whole street food area right outside the gates for hungry travelers. There's dango, okunomiyaki, custard pies, yakitori, crab sticks... and so much more!

Watch the video for a run down of the food they have!

Trying cheap Snacks in Fushimi Inari Shrine Kyoto | Kyoto Japan Street Food Tour

I wish you keep following my journey to find some hidden gem through out Japan !

Beautiful Fushimi Inari Shrine & Herring Soba Noodles

► Check out our blogs: Mark: Ying: (in Thai)

After a tourist crowded day in Kyoto the previous day, Ying and I decided to get an early start to our day in Kyoto on this day and we woke up and headed straight to the famous Fushimi Inari Shrine (Taisha) - which is most well known for its Japanese red Torii shrine gates.

00:18 Fushimi Inari Shrine - We started off at Fushimi Inari Shrine, and we luckily arrived early and beat the crowds - in fact there were only a few other people there when we arrived, it was so incredibly peaceful and quiet. I didn’t know we were going to climb then entire mountain, but when we started hiking up the hill, walking through the endless red Torii shrine gates, we just kept going and we decided to just make it up to the top - which was well worth it. The walk to the summit of Fushimi Inari Shrine was fantastic, but the real joy was getting there and enjoying the quiet peaceful outdoors. By the time we walked down to the entrance of the shrine, it was already getting busy. Fushimi Inari Shrine is one of the best things to do in Kyoto, and it really is a must visit place.

4:21 Matsuba Soba Kyoto (総本家にしんそば 松葉 本店) - I had really wanted to eat a soba meal when we were in Kyoto, and so after we packed our bags we went to a restaurant called Matsuba Soba Kyoto (総本家にしんそば 松葉 本店), famous for serving local Kyoto style soba noodles. I ordered the herring noodles, which came with a bowl of soba noodles in clear broth with a side of fish that tasted like barbecue. It was quite good, very fresh tasting, and very good quality. It was a little expensive, but I enjoyed the experience.

8:16 Nishiki Market (錦市場) - One of the most famous places to walk around and eat in Kyoto is the Nishiki Market (錦市場), and though we didn’t have too much extra time, I did want to stop in for a bit to walk around before we left Kyoto. The market was great, so much good food throughout the walking street, and many of the vendors were also very friendly. I had a small fish on a chopstick, and that was my snack as we walked around the Nishiki Market (錦市場).

10:00 Kyoto back to Osaka - We took the train, and although our train was delayed by about 30 minutes, we made it back to Osaka smoothly, and we navigated our way to our new Airbnb apartment that we had pre-booked. Everything went well.

11:57 Dinner at a Japanese Diner - For dinner, we were all quite tired, so we just went to a simple Japanese diner restaurant just a short walk from where we were staying, and we had a nice simple Japanese dinner. I had the Oyakodon (親子丼), a chicken and eggs rice bowl.
