TORO NEGRO HIKING: Best Alternative To El Yunque | Puerto Rico Travel Guides |

Hi there! In this video, I'll give you a complete guide to what might just be the best hiking alternative to El Yunque, the Toro Negro State Forest.

If you're planning on visiting Puerto Rico, it wouldn't be a surprise if El Yunque is at the top of the list of places you're planning to visit. El Yunque is full of scenic hiking trails, breathtaking views from lookout towers, and nearby rivers you can dip into and relax. Even though you can now visit El Yunque during weekdays without reserving a spot on the website recreation.gov until December 13, 2021, many might still be unable to visit if spots run out for the weekend. If you find yourself in this situation, or if you simply want to visit other forests and hiking trails in Puerto Rico, you’re in luck, because the Toro Negro State Forest offers all the things you might like to experience at El Yunque, and even more!

Puerto Rico Amazing Places | Bosque Toro Negro | Charco Doña Juana

In Today's video, we explore 2 amazing places in Puerto Rico, Bosque Toro Negro and Salto Doña Juana in orocovis. Toro Negro State Forest is one of the 21 forests that make up the public forests system in Puerto Rico. It is in the Cordillera Central region of the island and covers 7,968 acres of mountains. Toro Negro's mountains have heights reaching up to 4,400 feet (1,300 m) and include Cerro de Punta, Cerro Jayuya and Cerro Rosa, the three highest peaks on the island. Nested among these mountains is Lake Guineo, the island's highest lake. The forest has 18 kilometers (11 mi) of trails, an observation tower, two natural swimming pools (Spanish:charcos), camping and picnic areas, nine rivers, and numerous creeks and waterfalls.

Visitors can explore this magnificent forest on their own or in a tour. Among the facilities available at Toro Negro are a camping area, a recreational area, a system of hiking trails and observation points. Information about trails and campsites can be found on this website:

The best way to find out what trails will be open when you are visiting is to check out the Friends of Bosque Toro Negro facebook page:

This group of volunteers does great work cleaning the trails and educating the public about the ecosystem. Sometimes they even organize Yoga classes in the forest! You can ask the volunteers questions through Facebook Messenger, and they reply quite quickly with helpful information.

El Chorro de Dona Juana is a beautiful waterfall located in the town of Orocovis, approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes from San Juan. This Charco is one of the best examples of nature in its splendor, the sounds, fauna, and subtle breeze will make you forget everything and just enjoy the moment.
To get to the waterfalls, drive on PR-149 to km marker 41.3 and park along the road right before or after the waterfall bridge. At 200 feet tall, Dona Juana is the tallest waterfall in Puerto Rico!
These amazing falls are part of the Doña Juana Creek where it runs into the Toro Negro river. The falls are very accessible, as you can see them from the road as you drive across the bridge. No hiking required! However, some adventure groups organize events to hike and climb to the top of this incredible natural wonder. There are actually several other falls above the two that are visible from the road!

Hiking and Ziplining at Toro Negro Rainforest in Puerto Rico

A day out in the Toro Negro Rainforest, Puerto Rico's tallest of 16 Rainforests on the island with Acampa Natural Adventures Tour Company. Toro Negro is a hidden gem amongst Rainforests in Puerto Rico as El Yunque Rainforest usually gets most of the attention.
This was a great day of hiking, rapelling and ziplining through the beautifully rich jungle canapy and splashing around the refreshing creeks and waterfalls that flowed along our trek.

Things To Do In El Yunque Without a Reservation | Portal Del Yunque | Angelito Trail

Today we are sharing with you fun and exiting things to do in El Yunque National Forest without a reservation. Our first stop is El Portal del Yunque Visitor Center. Here we learn about the amazing flora and fauna of El Yunque and also about the Puerto Rican Parrot! We even adopted one! Our second stop is Angelito Trail. Only 7 minutes from El Portal and filled with stunning nature and beauty.

We use Epidemic Sound for our music. Click the link below for a free Trial!

El Portal del Yunque:
El Portal is the major visitor center of El Yunque National Forest and opened in 1996. In 2017, Hurricanes Irma and Maria caused structural damage to the building, resulting in the need for major building repairs and reconstruction.
The facility reopened in January 2022 and offers visitor information, exhibits, a store, café, and theater. The sustainable and open architecture visually connects to the surrounding Forest and incorporates elements of artwork by local artists in the design. Wood from trees blown down during the hurricanes is incorporated into some exhibits. Ranger led interpretive and educational programs are offered. An interpretive trail provides the opportunity to explore the surrounding area, which was previously a farm and a nursery. A portion of the trail is accessible. The Center offers the opportunity to see the endangered Puerto Rican Parrot and learn more about the species recovery efforts.

Angelito Trail:
This short trail descends through Tabonuco trees in the lower montane forest to the federally designated “Wild and Scenic River,” the Río Mameyes. As you get closer, the roar of the rushing river pulls you onward to Las Damas Pool and other favorite swimming spots. This is a nice trail for families with younger children and school groups.

This trail received a lot of flooding and damage after Hurricane Maria. The replacement of the pedestrian bridge was partially funded by donations through the National Forest Foundation (NFF) working with the nearby Wyndham Rio Mar Grand Resort and their guests.

Hiking Angelito Trail to a NATURAL Swimming Pool in El Yunque National Forest

Explore the Ocean With Us!
We’re Andrew and Laura – a Boat Captain, a Marine Scientist, and two professional Scuba Divers. Join us as we share wild stories, ocean adventures, and useful tips with you from under (and above) the sea!

- - -

Angelito Trail is one of the most popular trails in El Yunque National Forest towards Puerto Rico's east end. Only 45 minutes away from San Juan, the trail is well-trafficked with tourists and locals alike as it's open year-round, relatively easy, and leads to an incredible natural pool, Las Damas, along the Rio Mameyes.

This trail doesn't require a permit for entry, unlike other areas within El Yunque National Forest. In fact, that's the exact reason we came here - because we missed out on getting a permit for the La Mina Recreation Area of El Yunque National Forest (this may change post-pandemic).

But it honestly felt like it didn't matter by the day's end. Hiking the Angelito Trail, swimming in the Las Damas Pool, and climbing the rocks of the Rio Mameyes were more than enough to keep our entire family happy!

The Ultimate Puerto Rico Adventure!//Hiking El Yunque and exploring Old San Juan

Our last stop in Puerto Rico is often the ONLY stop for many visitors: San Juan. From here, we hiked in the infamous El Yunque National Forest only to be greeted by disappointing clouds. But that did not get our spirits down! The tropical rainforest made for some beautiful hiking.

We wrapped up our time on the island visiting the most tourist area of Old San Juan, and were pleasantly surprised. We wandered the colorful streets, visited a VERY windy castle, and walked outside the city walls. It was an amazing way to end our too short trip

The experience was phenomenal, and we can't wait to come back!

Switzerland of Puerto Rico!? Visit Barrio Toro Negro of Ciales and its River w/ Charco El Moron

On our trip to the mountains we were able to transport into the alpine mountains of Switzerland with our stop in Ciales, Puerto Rico to visit Barrio Toro Negro. This neighborhood has become known as the Switzerland of Puerto Rico (la Suiza de Puerto Rico) because of its rural rustic vibes with wooden houses, barns, longhorn cows, horses and other farm creatures. This area is also the way to enter into the river area of Charco el Moron whose water is super crystal clear and we even saw fish swimming. It's a gorgeous river with lots of charcos and water holes.
