WOW!! I've spent the last 24 hours living with Dr. Ahmed Salah at his home in a remote part of the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt. You guys are going to LOVE his story!!!
After getting inspired from meeting an Austrian tourist in his village 25 years ago, Dr. Ahmed has spent the last two decades educating himself on natural remedies to cure (almost) any kind of sickness. He grows EVERYTHING himself in his backyard -- I'm talking about hundreds of plants, vegetables, fruits, herbs and spices -- and crafts these 100% natural products into care packages to sell in his beautiful pharmacy. The craziest part about all of this is that we are in the middle of the desert!

Welcome back to the 41st episode of my $10 Series! Today I take you around the bustling city of Cairo, Egypt to see how far I can stretch $ 10 USD (PS: I got 10 items!).
I actually went to Cairo the first time in 2015 - way back when I was a budget backpacker and travel blogger (before I owned a video camera). I was young and naïve and to be honest, I didn't have a great time here.
But now, I'm back with fresh eyes and new perspectives, and let's just say that I'm enjoying Cairo about 10X as much as I did 5 years ago. It's also a very special time to visit because there are (literally) ZERO TOURISTS HERE, so I had the Pyramids of Giza all to myself. As long as you take precautions (wear a mask, avoid physical contact, wash hands frequently), then traveling is possible right now amid this new normal.

As I was road tripping across central Turkey, I received an Instagram message from someone who told me about a guy named Tom, who is currently walking across the country with his dog, Savannah.
It turns out that we were crossing the same part of Turkey at the same time, so I contacted him and found him literally in the middle of nowhere!
I was able to sit down with Tom for some time to hear about his motivation as to why he has spent the last 5 years walking across 48 countries alongside his dog and best friend. I think many of you guys will enjoy hearing his story!!

The other day, as I was strolling the streets of Ankara, Turkey I started hearing a drumming beat in the distance. I kept following my ears, and it led me to a 13 year old kid named Umut, who has a a deformed hand with one finger on it.
Amazingly, this kid lights up the street with his drumming and singing!!! He's so talented, that I decided to spontaneously interview him and tell you his story. Umut is proof that nothing should ever stop you from achieving your dreams!

When I woke up this morning in South Dakota, the last thing I thought I'd be eating for lunch is a delicious plate of SYRIAN FOOD!
But much to my surprise, I received a message on Instagram from a lovely lady named Sanaa, who invited me for lunch at her restaurant -- one of the most popular Syrian places in the country.
Words cannot express how happy this meal and experience made me! I spent 2 weeks in Syria last November, and I've really been missing the incredible food and hospitality - and thankfully, I just got my fix of both. Syrian cuisine might just be the best on this planet, what do you think?

Did you know that over HALF of the global supply of perfume comes from jasmine flowers in a small village in Northern Egypt?
The village is called Shubra Blula, and I came here today before sunrise to learn all about the process, which is fascinating!
During the peak season (which is now), thousands of local residents spend their entire nights hand picking these beautiful white jasmine flowers directly from the plants. Then, they are sent to a nearby factory to extract the liquid which is then sold to Paris, New York, Hong Kong and all around the world to be bottled up into perfume.
Who knew that Egypt is the king of the perfume world? I surely didn't before this trip!

Information and Framework of Project
While Guatemala has often been seen as the path less traveled by tourists that is quickly changing. In 2013, two million tourists visited Guatemala. Figures for April 2014 indicate that the country has enjoyed a 26% increase in tourists when compared to last year’s figures for the same period.
The growing number of tourists is a reflection of what the country has to offer, from lush rain forests to untouched forest reserves, volcanoes, pristine lakes, and a Mayan culture rich in beauty and traditions.
Nested in Guatemala is Lake Atitlán, the heart of the Mayan world. The village of Panajachel, located on the northeast shore of Lake Atitlán, has become a center for the tourist trade of the area and it provides a stopover for those who visit the villages surrounding the lake.
It is here in the village of Panajachel, where our ‘Pharmacy of Herbs’ store will call home. As the picture indicates below, the ‘Pharmacy of Herbs’ store will be located as part of a series of stores on a facility owned by one of our partners, Jennifer Bingham’s Bed and Breakfast.
Other partners include 4 local indigenous groups that grow and harvest herbs, whose medical practitioners prepare and treat individuals with varying types of illnesses and diseases.
An integral part of learning about a new culture and gaining an understanding of it is by taking a tour. “Pharmacy of Herbs’ store has partnered with well established tour operators who support this project and offer medicinal garden tour packages along with cultural tours on their websites that supports the ‘Pharmacy of Herbs’ vision.
Tours will begin at the ‘Pharmacy of Herbs’ store in Panajachel and be sold as part of the ‘Pharmacy of Herbs’ store revenue stream through our partners. Tours will take visitors to the villages around the lake where participants will learn from local Mayan indigenous healers about traditional healing paradigms and indigenous healing arts in Lake Atitlán, Guatemala.
We are blessed with a team of Internet experts who will assist us with this project positioning our story online on websites that cover travel to Central America. The ‘Pharmacy of Herbs’ store will also be listed on TripAdvisor, Lonely Planet, Frommers, Fodors, Vista Tours, Virtual Tourist, and others.
Other avenues we will use to get our story told are through our public relations partner ‘At Large PR’, a Las Vegas based PR firm. ‘At Large PR’ has participated in the development of this project and will bring the needed support of telling our story to the U.S. market through press releases announcing this project and will continue with ongoing public relations after the launch.
Our U.S. distributor partner is Wild4Roots, an herbal company focused on using only plants, roots, bark, and flowers to create all-natural therapies to help the human body stay healthy. Their mission is to provide 100% all natural products.

Before I came to Mexico on this trip, the first things that came to mind when thinking about the country were beaches, tacos, tequila, pyramids, and (sadly), cartels. Even from an international standpoint, these are the things that Mexico is best known for...
But I'm here to change that narrative and let you know that MEXICO HAS SOME OF THE WORLD'S BEST HOSPITALITY!! Earlier today in Oaxaca, I was invited into a household for a delicious home-cooked meal and I am just blown away by the friendliness and warmheartedness of this family. I've never felt more comfortable in a strangers house before in my life.
This dinner is only one example of the many experiences I've had in Mexico where the people are as kind and genuine as can be. But today was special -- I am falling deeper and deeper in love with this country!

This is a very special story, and it involves my friend Enes Kanter Freedom who is a Center for the Boston Celtics. Due to political reasons, Enes has been unable to go back home (Istanbul, Turkey) in 6 years, nor been able to see or communicate with his family. On my last trip to Istanbul, during the start of the pandemic, I did a Facetime call with Enes and I took him on a walk through his old neighborhood. We went outside of his house, to the local Mosque, and even to his favorite restaurant.
Congratulations to Enes for (finally) becoming an American citizen and getting a U.S. passport -- and for changing your last name to Freedom. You are a legend and a role model, and I'm looking forward to seeing you again soon!
