CHEFCHAOUEN, MOROCCO (2023) | BEST Things To Do In & Around The Blue City Of Chefchaouen

Chefchaouen is a small town set amidst the Rif Mountains in the northwest of Morocco. It’s also known as the Blue City because of its stunning blue buildings in the old town. And while it is still a relative mystery as to why the houses are painted blue, this charming town has a rich and interesting history waiting to be heard. We recommend staying a day or two enjoying all the best things to do in Chefchaouen, and three days or more if you want to venture to the surrounding Rif Mountains.

???? WHERE WE STAYED IN CHEFCHAOUEN:
- Chez Aziz:

6. Marvel at the blue houses

The number one reason to visit Chefchaouen is for its beautiful streets, filled with houses painted in different shades of blue. In fact, Chefchaouen has become a major tourist attraction in the last decade because of blue pictures circulating on social media.

5. Guided tour of the Old Town

While Chefchaouen may seem like a recent phenomenon on social media, the city has an intriguing history that dates back to the 15th Century. The best way to learn about it is by joining a guided tour of the Old Town. The tours take you to the most important sights, such as the main square, the Grand Mosque, and the outside of the Kasbah.

☑️ Free walking tour (the one we did):

4. Visit the Kasbah Museum

In the bustling main square sits the red-walled Kasbah, a 15th-century fortress and dungeon. Inside the walls you can find Andalusian Gardens as well as a museum that features a collection of artifacts from the Chefchaouen region. It’s a peaceful escape from the city and another great opportunity to learn a bit more about the history of this area.

3. Stroll around Ras El Ma

The most peaceful and fascinating area of Chefchaouen is Ras El Ma. Here, the fresh mountain water trickles into the town. It’s the main water resource for the population and used to be a popular hangout spot for locals. Women traditionally gathered along the banks of the river to socialize as they washed clothes and blankets.

2. Go hiking in the Rif Mountains

As a mountain town, Chefchaouen is surrounded by beautiful nature. The Rif Mountains might be lesser known than the Atlas Mountains, but are equally beautiful. Lush forests and impressive peaks rise above the Mediterranean and provide great hiking routes. Right outside Chefchaouen you can find Talassemtane National Park, with different trails such as the Akchour Waterfalls and God’s Bridge.

1. Watch the sunset from the Spanish Mosque

Finally, we recommend ending your visit in Chefchaouen with a magical sunset over the city and mountains. There are many viewpoints around the city, but the Spanish Mosque might be the most popular and beautiful one. It’s an easy 20 to 30 minute hike to the top, and there is a clear path that leaves from Ras El Ma to the hilltop.

MOROCCO - The Beautiful Blue City Chefchaouen ????

There's a beautiful blue city in Morocco also known as the blue pearl of Morocco. Chefchaouen is a charming, picturesque city nestled in the Rif mountains and its buildings all throughout the town are painted in various shades of blue.

Chefchaouen also known as Chaouen is about a 4 hour bus ride from Fes. We took the CTM bus to travel to Chaouen and absolutely loved the gorgeous mountain views along the way.

Morocco’s Magical BLUE City - Chefchaouen Morocco

In this Morocco Travel Vlog, I take you to Chefchaouen Morocco, also known as Morocco’s Blue City or the Blue City of Morocco. Chefchaouen is located in the North of Morocco and is situated by the beautiful Rif Mountain Range. What makes Chefchaouen Morocco so special is that the ENTIRE city is painted blue, which is why Chefchaouen is referred to as Morocco’s Blue City or the Blue City of Morocco. Many people believe that Chefchaouen is the most beautiful place in Morocco. So, in this Chefchaouen Morocco Vlog, I will give you a full tour of Chefchaouen Morocco, showing you all of the best things to do in this magical city.

To start off my Chefchaouen vlog and the Morocco blue city tour, I get lost wandering around the Medina of Chefchaouen Morocco. The entire Medina in Chefchaouen is lined with magical cobblestone streets and beautiful blue homes, shops, cafes, and restaurants. The streets of Chefchaouen’s Medina are incredibly narrow, but each one is also incredibly beautiful. You could easily spend an entire day slowly strolling around the beautiful blue streets of Chefchaouen Morocco’s Medina. After just a few minutes in Chefchaouen’s Medina, you will understand why Chefchaouen is called the Blue City of Morocco, or the best city in Morocco.

Another one of my favorite things about walking around Morocco’s Blue City of Chefchaouen, is that there are tons of cats all around the Medina. The amount of beautiful photos you can take inside the Blue City Medina is never ending. Walking Chefchaouen’s Medina is the perfect way to start off your Chefchaouen Morocco tour.

Next on my Chefchaouen Morocco vlog, I walk a few minutes outside of the Medina to the town center of Chefchaouen for lunch. No blue city tour would be complete without exploring outside of the Medina so I went to a little local spot for lunch in the cit center. For lunch I got a traditional Moroccan Tagine, which you can find all over Morocco. After a delicious lunch I continue my tour of Chefchaouen Morocco and continue exploring the beautiful blue city of Morocco by wandering the streets of the city. I was surprised to find that even the streets outside of the Medina were also painted blue and were incredibly beautiful too. Next on my Chefchaouen vlog, I walked to a beautiful viewpoint over the city of Chefchaouen, where I could see tons of blue homes and roofs. This was also a perfect place to watch the sunset over the Rif Mountains and the city of Chefchaouen.

After a beautiful sunset, it was time to continue exploring Morocco Blue City and discover Chefchaouen at night. For dinner I got a local Moroccan dish of chickpeas and a panini sandwich! The entire town and Medina of Chefchaouen Morocco is absolutely incredible and I can understand why Chefchaouen is believed by many people to be the most beautiful city in Morocco or the best city in Morocco. The Blue City of Morocco is truly incredible!

The Blue City of Chefchaouen, Morocco

The Blue City of Chefchaouen, Morocco

►Read the blog:

Today we are exploring Chefchaouen, internationally known as the blue city of Morocco. The name means horns of a goat which is in reference to the two peaks which are behind the city.

A walk through the mountain city of Chefchaouen is perhaps the most scenic stroll one could have in Morocco. Narrow streets and alleys lead you through a colorful city with a 500-year-old fort at its center.

There are several theories as to why the city is painted blue, but the consensus is that Jews escaping the Spanish inquisition in the late 1400s arrived and started the tradition. It’s definitely a place where you’ll need to wear comfortable walking shoes.

I asked around for a good place to eat and many people suggested Casa Hassan. The restaurant is located one block away from the Kasbah. The food here is delicious! It's about 80 dinar for a three course meal.

If you’re in Tangier or Fes, Chefchaouen is a great day trip option, but I suggest spending the night so you don’t feel rushed. Don’t forget your camera for this place! There is a photo opportunity around every corner.

There you have the blue city of Chefchaouen, Morocco! Have any other tips about the city? Leave a comment below!

Exploring The Blue City With My Favourite Lens… Chefchaouen, Morocco

I spent two days photographing the wonderful 'Blue City' of Chefchaouen in northern Morocco. In my street photography style I attempt to capture and convey the beauty of this place while trying to avoid cliche shots, or repeating the same idea over and over again (a person walking down a blue alley!).

Sit back and enjoy this calming POV street photography video.

Hiking Through CHEFCHAOUEN, Morocco's Blue City

100% free and 100% worth your time: hiking to the Spanish Mosque to catch these ???? views over Morocco’s stunning blue city Chefchaouen. “We went first thing in the morning so we wouldn’t melt in the daytime heat,” says Lonely Planet’s @deepa. “It’s a nice walk, but if you’re going before the sun’s up, I recommend joining a group for peace of mind. The roads are mostly empty except for a few dogs. Street lamps light the way near the medina, but some paths leading to the mosque are darker. My phone’s flashlight did the job just fine.”

If early mornings are a hard pass for you, go for sunset or whenever you can squeeze it in, because the views are gorg no matter the time of day. Don’t forget to bring water and stop for fresh orange juice on the way!

hefchaouen or Chaouen (Arabic: شفشاون/الشاون‎‎, Shafshāwan (pronounced IPA: ʃəfˈʃɑˑwən);Berber: ⴰⵛⵛⴰⵡⵏ, Ashawen; Portuguese: Xexuão; Spanish: Xauen, lit. horns) is a city in northwest Morocco. It is the chief town of the province of the same name, and is noted for its buildings in shades of blue.

Chefchaouen is situated in the Rif Mountains, just inland from Tangier and Tetouan. The city was founded in 1471,[1] as a small fortress which still exists to this day, by Moulay Ali Ben Moussa Ben Rached El Alami (a descendant of Ibn Machich and Idris I, and through them, of the Islamic prophet Muhammad) to fight the Portuguese invasions of northern Morocco.[2] Along with the Ghomara tribes of the region, many Moriscos and Jews settled here after the Spanish Reconquista in medieval times.[3] In 1920, the Spanish seized Chefchaouen to form part of Spanish Morocco. Spanish troops imprisoned Abd el-Krim in the kasbah from 1916 to 1917, after he talked with the German consul Dr. Walter Zechlin (1879–1962). (After defeating him with the help of the French, Abd el-Krim was deported to Réunion in 1926.) Spain returned the city after the independence of Morocco in 1956.
