The friendly Fisherman of the Western Sahara - Cycling around the World | Dreamsontracks

While cycling through the Sahara in Morocco/Western Sahara, we slept in the hut of some fishermen, and received unprecedented hospitality. While cycling through the Sahara, on empty roads, with a lot of sand and wind, sometimes it was hard to find a place for camping or for sleeping, because it's a bit of a risky area, so camping was not always allowed. We asked at an army hut, and they showed us a fisherman hut. The fishermen came back and we had tea and breakfast together. What a wonderful experience in the biggest sand desert in the world.

Bicycle touring Egypt | Of Pyramids and Police Escorts

Africa, the great unknown continent. Egypt, the first African country on my Cape to Cape cycling adventure.

After sailing the mediterranean and the Red Sea, we disembark at Hurghada on the Egyptian coast. I have never been to Africa before and didn't know much about it. Cycling through Africa promises to be an adventure of an entirely different level. In the first kilometers through Egypt I'm already turned back by police, after which we try to go around military checkpoints through the desert.
From Hurghada we cycling north towards Cairo. First, to get our Sudanese visa there. Second, to see the Great Pyramids of Giza. After Cairo we manage to cycle without police escorts for a few days, cycling around the checkpoints and camping in the desert at night. But then a local informs the police about our whereabouts and the next morning they are waiting for us. It is a mixed feeling, cycling in front of or behind a police car every day.
It feels very strange and uncomfortable when one day the police provides us with lunch, which we are eating in front of nearly 200 people, mostly children, who are kept at a distance by the police and their machine guns.
After seeing the remains of ancient Egypt in Luxor, for some reason the police decides not to escort me anymore. I follow the Nile south to Aswan, from which it is a long stretch through the Sahara desert to the border with Sudan.

Over the Shoulders of Atlas: A Cycling Odyssey Across North Africa

Five years after circumnavigating the globe, Jon and Imran take on a new challenge; the pair set out to become the first men to cycle across the width of North Africa’s Maghreb, from Morocco in the west, through Algeria and Tunisia, to arrive at the gates of Libya. Follow the pair in the first of this two-part series as they travel through Morocco in the depths of winter and experience the people, the culture, and the beauty of the Atlas Mountains.

Bicycle touring Namibia - part 2 | Cycling around the planet #24

In the second part of cycling through Namibia I leave the Brandberg mountain and cycle towards the Atlantic coast. I stock up on food and water in Walvis Bay before heading back into the Namib desert, where I cross the famous Gamsberg pass and Spreetshoogte pass. I stay one night in Solitaire, before cycling further to the legendary Sossusvlei. The scenery is amazing, it wants to make me fly the drone every day. When I see the blue waters of the Orange river, I know I have reached the border to South Africa.

Bicycle touring Namibia | Cycling around the planet #23

Namibia has been one of the toughest and most enjoyable countries to cycle through at the same time. Being the country with the lowest population density in Africa, one can cycle for hours within seeing anyone. This often gave me the ultimate feeling of freedom, but at the same time, it can make the cycling tougher as well.
In this first part of bicycle touring Namibia, I explore some the most iconic mountains and mountain ranges of Namibia, including the Waterberg national park, Spitzkoppe, the Erongo Rhino sanctuary and Brandberg mountain.

Bicycle touring Tanzania | Paradise at Lake Tanganyika

The first days in Tanzania were probably one of my toughest days on the bicycle. I had no food or money and didn't realize the first opportunity to get money was three days of very tough cycling away. But the bicycle touring magic that had already saved me many times before, saved me again this time.
After long tough days in the northwest of Tanzania, I reached the great lake Tanganyika, where I eventually found a boat that would take me a few 100km down the lake. It turned out to be an indescribable adventure, along the most beautiful paradise-like villages I have ever seen.

Bicycle touring Uganda | Cycling through the Pearl of Africa

Uganda, the Pearl of Africa. Never on my cycling journeys did I see so many people and so much wildlife in the same country. It was also the greenest country I have cycled through. I indulged myself every day on the abundant supply of juicy fresh fruit.
From Kampala I cycled to the far west of Uganda, through the Kibale forest to the mountains of the moon. Then I cycled amongst hippos, elephants, lions and buffalo through Queen Elizabeth National Park. It was an absolute highlight to cycle amidst all this wildlife.

Bicycle touring Kenya | Cycling through the land of the Lion King

Fortunately, we did not actually meet any lions in the land of the Lion King. But cycling through Kenya we came eye to eye with a lot of its wildlife.

After a crazy ride through Ethiopia I cycled through the North Kenyan desert to Marsabit, together with Simon. We ended up taking a long rest in Nanyuki, at the foothills of mighty Mount Kenya. Seeing that mighty peak every morning we woke up, we decided that we had to climb it. And so we went for an unforgettable 3-day hike up Mount Kenya.
Together with Simon and Caro, we cycled through Laikipia, probably the area in entire Africa with the most free roaming wildlife. We cycled among elephants, zebra, giraffe as we went onthe Kenyan backcountry roads. My journey almost came to an abrupt end there when my rear hub broke, but as if by a miracle, the only person in a 50km radius happened to have a similar bike to me and was willing to lend his wheel.
As Caro and Simon went home from Nairobi, I continued solo on my Cape to Cape cycling adventure.
