The Greatest High Arctic Town in the World! Longyearbyen (Svalbard) - A Cultural Travel Guide

At over 78 degrees north, Longyearbyen is the last substantial settlement before the North Pole and the main administrative centre of the Svalbard archipelago. Once a tough mining town, it is now a centre for scientific research as well as a prime tourism destination. It provides a home to over 50 nationalities, taking advantage of the visa free rules enshrined in the Svalbard Treaty. Most of the conveniences of a modern Norwegian town are present, but with the significant added pressure of a location in a polar bear environment and the hardship of 84 days of darkness in winter.

In this film I am indebted to the contribution of Katie Herlingshaw and also the kindness of Stuart Thomson in providing added photography.

What is Longyearbyen like?
Who can live in Longyearbyen?
Where is Longyearbyen?
What to see in Longyearbyen?
What is the best cafe in Longyearbyen?

Answers to all these questions and more!

SUMMER IN THE HIGH ARCTIC | LONGYEARBYEN, SVALBARD

Recently, I spent 10 nights, 9 days in the high arctic thanks to Poseidon Expeditions. The specific cruise we went on was West Spitsbergen & Polar Ice Edge - Arctic Wildlife Safari by Poseidon. This particular trip is ideal for those who want to get a taste of the arctic in a limited time. Because it is a shorter trip, you get a good mix of people from various ages, countries, and backgrounds.

Here was our itinerary for the trip (keep in mind that the sites for days 3-9 are wildlife and weather dependent):
Day 0 pre-cruise: Longyearbyen
Day 1: Longyearbyen (dog carting, mine tour)
Day 2: Longyearbyen (Svalbard museum, city tour), Embarkation
Day 3: Ny Ålesund, Ossian Sarsfjellet
Day 4: Polar Ice Edge (80° north)
Day 5: Lillihookbreen, Camp Zoe
Day 6: Northwest Spitsbergen National Park
Day 7: Fagerbukta, Trygghamna
Day 8: Poolepynten, St. Johnsfjord
Day 9: Skansbukta, Borebukta, Polar Plunge
Day 10: Disembarkation

Here are some of my recommendations for Longyearbyen:
-Cafe Huskies:
-Green Dog Svalbard:
-Radisson Blu Polar Hotel Spitsbergen:
-Restaurant Nansen (located inside the Radisson):
-Booking day trips:
-Poseidon Expeditions:

Here are some of my travel tips for the arctic:
-The airport you will fly in and out of is Svalbard Airport, or LYR. You will likely have stops in Oslo or Tromsø due to the nature of the small airport.
-Svalbard Airport is quite separate from the country of Norway and you will likely have several connecting flights in various countries to get to Svalbard. I suggest packing only 1 checked bag (23 kg/50 lb or less) so as not to pay for separate checked bag fees multiple times. Your 2 carry-on bags can include 1 for personal items and 1 for all electronics.
-There is no bank in Svalbard so all payments are cashless. I found that all establishments actually took Apple Pay and was super seamless.
-When you arrive in Longyearbyen, there will be at least 2 charter buses parked outside. Just inform the drivers which hotel you are going to, and they will direct you which bus to go on to get your to your lodging site. You can pay for one-way or round-trip with credit card.
-If you prefer to extend your stay in Longyearbyen, I suggest no more than 1 day, unless you plan on booking various day trips/excursions since the town is quite small. Personally, I suggest you do so before the trip rather than at the end. That way, you can acclimated with jet lag and at the end of the trip you can travel with the group rather than stay behind.

Here are some of my packing tips for the arctic summer:
-Remember, you will get a parka for keeps on the trip upon embarkation. I suggestion packing tons of thermal, base layers to save space in your luggage and also have plenty of clean clothes throughout the trip. Personally, I suggest at least: 7 pairs of leggings, 1 pair of fleece-lined pants, 1 pair of fleece pants, 5-7 long sleeve shirts, 1-3 short sleeve shirts, vests, 1-3 fleece jackets, 7 pairs of wool socks, 10 pairs of regular socks, 1 fleece buff, tennis shoes, slippers, hiking shoes, thin gloves, 1-2 beanies, fleece cap, swimsuit, and plenty of face masks.
-Other must-have items for cruising in the arctic include: sunglasses, motion sickness pills and/or patches, all prescriptions, binoculars, and sunscreen.

Dare To Travel – 26-Year-Old Singaporean Living in the High Arctic in Svalbard, Norway

My family and friends thought I was crazy when I wanted to move up to the Arctic at 78° north.

Meet Wei Si, a spunky 26-year-old currently living in the Arctic Longyearbyen in Svalbard, Norway — the northernmost town in the world! Away from family and friends, she shares with us why she moved from tropical Singapore, and what it's like living in a town with more polar bears than people.

Svalbard in 1 minute - The ultimate Arctic getaway

Ready to set on an adventure to the polar regions, but not sure where to start? For someone who wants to make his or her first step into the frozen wilderness up North, the High Arctic, we suggest taking an expedition cruise to Svalbard, otherwise known as Spitsbergen. This is a great place to start your lifelong love of the polar regions because you are sure to find something to ignite your polar passion.

Svalbard has a lot of everything and something for everyone. Here you can easily encounter most of the iconic Arctic wildlife, including polar bears, walrus, seals, reindeer, Arctic foxes, and huge colonies of Arctic seabirds. Photographers and sightseers will appreciate the wide range of classic polar landscapes such as flowering tundra, calving glaciers, snowcapped mountains, polar deserts, and the edge of the polar pack ice. The archipelago also contains a wealth of remains from historical periods ranging from the early whaling era to the Age of Discovery.

Svalbard makes a great first impression of the polar regions and your experience there will inspire your next polar expedition based on what you find most enjoyable - wildlife, scenery or history. Take it from us: your first trip to the polar regions will most likely not be your last!

Canadian High Arctic

This video is a sequel to the one describing my journey to Greenland aboard the Russian icebreaker Kapitan Khlebnikov. Part II takes us to the Canadian High Arctic which is sparsely inhabited and where the icy fingers of winter are already making their presence felt.

What’s it like to do an expedition cruise around Svalbard?

Polar bears, glaciers, and oh so many seabirds… Embarking on an expedition cruise to the Arctic islands of Svalbard is like venturing into another world or an earlier version of this one.

As you’ll see in this beautifully shot video, Svalbard (also known as Spitsbergen) is virtually overflowing with well-earned superlatives: Amazing, astonishing, and especially epic are all adjectives that come to mind when trying to describe what makes Svalbard expedition cruises so special.

And since Svalbard is virtually bursting with eye-popping landscapes and exotic wildlife, we asked travel filmmaker Tim Charody to embark on one of our expedition cruises to the archipelago to ask our passengers what they love so much about this incomparable location.

Included in this video are interviews shot on location in Svalbard, giving you a little taste of what you might experience on an expedition cruise there. We also explain what exactly an expedition cruise is, since it differs so radically from standard cruises by emphasizing wildlife and exploration.

Also featured in this video are clips of the many activities you can enjoy in Svalbard, such as shoreline hikes and Zodiac cruises, as well as shots of the local land mammals, marine life, and seabirds. These species include but are not limited to:

• Polar bears
• Humpback whales
• Walruses
• Bearded seals
• Puffins
• Arctic foxes
• Kittiwakes
• Reindeer

Though we cannot guarantee you will see any one species, our expedition guides will always be on the lookout for them. And if safety concerns regarding weather, ice conditions, and polar bear presence force us to alter out itinerary, we will always choose the best possible alternative.

Whatever your personal experience on a Svalbard cruise, our expedition leaders and guides will always do their utmost to get you off the ship and into the action as much as possible. That is what separates an Oceanwide cruise from the rest of the polar pack.

If you want more details about all you can see and do in Svalbard, see our numerous Svalbard blogs:

My travels in Svalbard - an Arctic cruise with Audley Travel

Audley Specialist Megan ventured to The Arctic and recorded this amazing footage using a GoPro. This is what she had to say about her adventure.

The Arctic: one of the last frontiers on Earth, home to colossal glistening icebergs and vast arrays of wildlife.

With a brief stop in Oslo, one of Scandinavia’s most stylish cities, I flew north to the small town of Tromso. The remote town is nestled on the far northern coastline of Norway. Discussions with locals show Tromso is clearly proud of its location, situated comfortably inside the southern edge of the Arctic Circle. The town has a distinct yet unfamiliar charm, with friendly residents and some impressive architecture making the stop an unexpected highlight.

From Tromso my twelve night expedition voyage to Svalbard began, via reindeer-herding Norwegian Sami tribes and the misleadingly titled Bjørnøya (Bear Island). A Polar Bear sighting is in fact a near impossibility here outside of the impassable winter months, but the rugged cliffs are a much more popular destination for millions of nesting sea birds.

On approach to Svalbard’s main island of Spitsbergen, the vast expanses of ocean unhurriedly transform into sea and drift ice. During the next nine days it became clear to me why Svalbard is a high priority destination for the wildlife enthusiast. Most notably the area has the world’s highest concentration of the usually elusive polar bear, and after multiple sightings on both land and ice there was no disappointment. If that wasn’t enough, the frequent polar bear sightings were interspersed with lounging walrus colonies, timid groups of reindeer, predatory arctic foxes and swarms of frantic seabirds.

After soaking in the spectacular surroundings and scenery on foot, by kayak and zodiac cruise, we arrived at the departure point. The once thriving mining town of Longyearbyen is the perfect place to try out husky-sledding, which is certainly one of the most exhilarating and unique methods of transportation I have had the pleasure to undertake!

Time to go home.

80° North - Svalbard - the wild beauty of the icy high Arctic

a collection of clips I took on board the sailing vessel Antigua in 2014 during the circumnavigation of Svalbard, an artic island some miles north of Norway.
The clip shows some sailing impressions, wildlife and ladscape. Highlights are the whales and the polar bears.
There is a myestic blue whale, the the largest animals ever known to have lived on Earth. Other clips are from two different sighings of humpback whales feeding and relaxing near the surface. During 14 days we spotted quite a lot different polar bears. The highlight was truely one bear feeding on a dolphin (don´t get me wrong I love dolphins as much as you do). The dolphin presumably died due to natural causes. Polar bears are usually not quick enough to catch dolphins.
