Enjoy a short preview of the ancient Tuscan hill town of Pitigliano, Italy. The town is also known as Piccola Gerusalemme, or Little Jerusalem after its once large Jewish population that settled here in the 16th century to avoid persecution from the Vatican. The earliest known mention of Pitigliano dates back to 1031AD but the area has been inhabited since Etruscan Times. A 16th century aqueduct runs along the side of town.

The numerous archaeological finds, the necropolis and the mysterious and fascinating Vie Cave testify that the city has been inhabited since the Archaic age.
Undoubtedly of Etruscan origin, it was succeeded first by the Romans and then by the Lombards. Since the 9th century. B.C. the political life of this town was closely linked to Sovana, the main seat of the Aldobrandeschi family.
Subsequently, with the inexorable decline that Sovana was experiencing, the importance of Pitigliano became ever greater and in 1293, with the marriage between Romano Orsini and Anastasia, daughter of Margherita Aldobrandeschi and Guido di Montfort, the county seat was transferred from Sovana to Pitigliano.
On the death of the most illustrious member of the Orsini family, Pope Nicholas III, the entire county was troubled by internal conflicts and by the assaults of the Sienese republic.

*Suana* was an Etruscan center, which from the conquest of Vulci onwards (280 BC) underwent a gradual process of Romanization, culminating in the creation of the town hall with the granting of Roman citizenship to the Italics.
In the 5th century it is already documented as a bishopric. The current historic center developed during the Middle Ages in the vicinity of the pre-existing Etruscan necropolis, under the control of the Aldobrandeschi family, who had a castle built around the year 1000.
In medieval times it also became a free municipality and gave birth to Ildebrando di Sovana, who later became Pope Gregory VII; it was also the capital of the county of the same name.
At the end of the 13th century it was inherited by the Orsini following the same fate as Sorano and Pitigliano until the 15th century, when the center was conquered by the Sienese.
In the mid-16th century, the definitive fall of the Republic of Siena brought Sovana into the hands of the Medici, who incorporated it into the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.
The Medici tried to repopulate the village, in a state of severe degradation after the plague epidemics, with settlers from Greece: the attempt was useless, in 1702 only twenty-four people were registered in Sovana. Even under the Lorena family, despite the attempts, the situation did not improve.
Depopulated and abandoned, it has found new life in the course of the 20th century, thanks to the rich archaeological heritage that makes it a popular tourist destination.
The village is included in the list of the most beautiful villages in Italy sponsored by the National Association of Italian Municipalities.

【Sovana 2022】4K Walk in the beautiful Borgo | Tuscany Italy
Few kilometers from Pitigliano we can visit the wonderful Sovana, a real jewel that has maintained its typical medieval features over the centuries. The town is dominated by the Rocca Aldobrandesca dating back to the 11th century, built on a pre-existing Etruscan structure.
The heart of Sovana is represented by the Piazza del Pretorio (11th century) dominated by the large clock of the Palazzo dell'Archivio (12th century) once the seat of the municipality, today a center of historical and archaeological documentation. Also in the main square, on the left, worthy of note is the late Romanesque church of Santa Maria, Palazzo Bourbon Del Monte dating back to the 1500s, and the early Christian church of San Mamiliano, now a museum, where was found a treasure consisting of gold coins, which is still preserved in the church itself. Do not miss the Cathedral of Santi Pietro e Paolo, built in the 10th century by the most illustrious citizen in the history of Sovana: Ildebrando di Soana, who became Pope, in 1073, with the name of Gregory VII.

[Città del tufo-Sovana 2022] Walking tour in the Etruscan necropolis | What to see in Tuscany, Italy
The Sovana necropolis is part of the archaeological park “Città del Tufo ”, and is located just a few kilometers from the homonymous town. The most important part of the site is located north of the Calesine stream and it presents, immersed in lush vegetation, some of the most famous and extraordinary monumental tombs left by the Etruscan civilization: the monumental tombs with a colonnaded front such as the Pola tomb and the Ildebranda tomb, which takes its name from the most famous citizen of Sovana who became pope with the name of Gregory VII. Very important is also the aedicule tombs of “Typhon” and “Winged Demons”, the latter discovered in 2004.
In the other sector of the necropolis, called “Sopraripa” there are cube, semidado, and falsodado tombs, but above all the aedicule tomb of the Siren.
The necropolis is also cut by “The vie cave”, ancient paths excavated in the tuff and in the open air, that connected the various centers and necropolises in the area as well as probably performed an important defensive function.
Some stunning and evocative cave streets in the area pass through the necropolis such as the Cavone, the via cava di Poggio Prisca and the via cava of San Sebastiano. Walking through them, between light and shadow, means entering a primordial nature where time seems suspended and the air seems still, immobile ...
