Hiking to Utah's most incredible slot canyon waterfall in 2022. The small town of Kanarraville in southwest Utah holds one of the coolest hikes I've ever done in the USA. This is a hike every person should add to their bucket list. They recently renovated the first ladder for safety reasons and put a permit system in place, but check it out for all the info you'll need and everything you can expect while hiking to Kanarra Falls.

Kanarra Falls is one of Utah's best hikes!
Hiking the Kanarra Falls trail. This four mile in and back trail has it all, forest, mountain, slot canyon and four waterfalls to cool off under. It's not a difficult trail and is considered a moderate hike, but because the trail is actually a creek for the second half, it can be pretty slippery with a it of scrambling up the second falls. There is a $12 permit required and only 150 are issued a day so it keeps the crowds down but you do need to plan ahead because of that. Also, because you will spend much of the time in a slot canyon with a stream running through it the trail you should wear footwear that is designed to get wet. The trail closes if there is storm activity so watch the weather because flash floods are very dangerous. It was 100 degrees when I hiked this in July 2022 and the water was still very cold but refreshing

Kanarra Falls is one of the best hikes in Utah and a must do hike. We took the entire family on an unforgettable hike in Kanarraville, Southern Utah. We had to cross streams and often walk up the streams. We saw towering slot canyons the were inspiring. Of coarse the two unique ladders at each of the large waterfalls to get you to the next location were a lot of fun to climb. This is a fairly difficult hike for children, but definitely do-able. This was probably my favorite hike of the year. If you like waterfall hikes, this is one of my top waterfall hike recommendations in Utah.

This adventure is definitely one of the top 10 most awesome trails I have ever done. This hike is labeled as moderate at 3.8-miles round trip and 600ft of elevation gain. This hike is like a mini version of the Zion Narrows. You hike through a creek and an extremely beautiful slot canyon to get to 2 unbelievably stunning waterfalls!

Kanarraville, Utah – One of the most easily recognized trails in southern Utah, the Kanarra Falls Trail is a must-do while you're here.
Following the creek through a stunning red rock slot canyon, the world seems to disappear between crimson cliff faces. While the trail is open year-round, permits ARE REQUIRED and the trail shouldn't be underestimated.

The Kanarra Falls Hike near Zion, Utah | 4K (Insta360 One R+)
August 2020 -- my short hike up to Kanarra Falls near Kanarraville, Utah just north of Zion National Park. The hike is mostly up Kanarra Creek and includes going through two photogenic slot canyons and climbing up over ladders and boulders along the way. Video includes footage from the Insta360 One R, OSMO Pocket, and Pixel 2XL cameras.
Note: this hike now requires a permit and typically a reservation several weeks in advance. The ladders necessary to climb the waterfalls are recommended for agile hikers only and the entire hike is very prone to flash floods, so have a good forecast before setting out.

Kanarraville Falls is one of the best hikes in Utah especially if you like canyoneering. If you're looking to hike through an amazing slot canyon with waterfalls look no further than Kanarraville falls in Southern Utah. This hike through an amazing slot canyon will lead you to two beautiful waterfalls, one with a cave under it and a great water slide. If you're looking for something fun to do in Utah in the summer be sure to schedule a hike to Kanarville falls near Cedar City.
Kanarra Falls is well known as a favorite destination for adventure seekers. Bring your water shoes because you will get wet. Much of this hike takes you through the stream and you will get wet climbing the steps of the waterfall. Be careful because the steps are awkward and they can be slippery. The pay off is an awesome handmade wooden ladder, with metal steps leading you to the upper falls where you'll find ropes bolted to the canyon wall allowing you to keep going if you want.
The slot canyon hike to Kanarraville Falls is 3.8 miles round trip and the difficulty level is moderate. Average Hike Time is 2 - 4 hours. Don't bring your dog because no pets are allowed. There's also no camping or fires allowed.
The drive time from Salt Lake City to Kanarraville is 3.5 to 4 hours.
The drive time from St. George to Kanarraville is about 45 minutes.
This hike can be tricky as there are plenty of slippery spots and loads of obstacles.
Kanarraville Falls is a great family hike but, it can be challenging for younger children or people with physical limitations.
If it starts to rain you may want to get out of the canyon as slot canyons like this one are famous for flash flood which could easily kill you.
There is a non-refundable permit fee of $12.00 per person. This does include free parking. They only allow 150 people per day and they usually sell out so you will want to reserve in advance!

Hiking 3.2 miles round-trip to the famous Kanarra Falls just outside the small town of Kanarraville, located in Southern Utah.
This gem was hidden from the world for until about 15 years ago, when the Internet revealed its location and then social media increased traffic (and garbage) by 20 times. What was once free, now costs $12 a person (and probably will increase again in the future).
Permits for each person need to be obtained online at and many days/weeks/months (if possible) in the future.
This is an incredibly popular hike in the summer and weekends!
We hiked this in the winter, as most people tend to NOT hike in the colder months. But with the proper hiking clothes and boots, you can still see and hike these beautiful places, despite how popular they are!

Kanarra Falls, Kanarraville, Utah | The Frame
Kanarra Falls features year-around water flow. The trail is nearly 4.3 miles long and only 150 people are allowed to visit per day (apparently there was too much human waste and dangerous crowding at bottlenecks that they limited the number of people who can visit). Be sure to buy your tickets at least 3 weeks in advance ( There is one ladder you must pass to reach the last part of the trail. When you reach the final falls, it is hard to go any further as the ladder was washed away in 2019. There is a rope you may be able to climb, but it is not recommended and can be very difficult. People frequently injure themselves here. If you do go past this point, the trail continues for miles into the Bureau of Land Management land.

Kanarra Falls - Utah's Best Kept Secret (STILL)
I love the outdoors and as a part of my new life pursuit to live my life to the fullest, I decided to get the most out of my local Utah hiking spots. I had heard about this amazing slot canyon in Southern #Utah just outside of Cedar City called #KanarraFalls. Originally I had planned to go the Summer of 2017 but my poor health prevented me from doing anything that Summer. So finally after some solid planning I was able to head down to Kanarraville, Utah and hike #KanarraFalls.
We planned this hike for August of 2018 (monsoon season) and knew we would need to keep our plans flexible in case of flash flooding. You don’t want to be in a narrow slot canyon during a flash flood. There was plenty of parking in both the lower and upper parking lot. The owner of the Sweet Spot informed us of a weather app that allowed us to keep track of the developing storm clouds via doppler radar.
The hike starts with a one mile utility road hike with some incline. We then reached the BLM sign at the first river crossing. At this point you will hike another half mile along the river up the canyon. Once you reach the mouth of the slot canyon you will have another four hundred yards and you will reach the first ladder. This is a beautiful waterfall with sandstone walls. We encountered about twenty people in front of us waiting to climb the ladder and another thirty people trying to come down. Plan on a little bit of a wait here as it gets quite congested. The first waterfall is beautiful and the latter is really well made with rope supports on the canyon wall.
The next mile is filled with beautiful narrow sandstone walls and some open forested areas. Water came about to our knees in a few spots but not bad at all since the water was not flowing very fast. I should mention that the hike stays pretty cool with water and shade provided by the canyon.
The next ladder is pretty sketchy, it was missing a rung from a flash flood that occurred two weeks prior. Climbing the ladder was fairly easy but the descent down felt a bit dangerous. Exercise caution if you proceed past up this 2nd ladder. Beyond the latter is a few more slot canyons and some more open tree areas. After a few hours of hiking up we decided to take a break and have some snacks and water.
The hike down was quick as we weren’t doing as much video/photo. The scenery is very impressive. I highly recommend the hike to anyone looking for a fun adventurous weekend activity. I would also recommend this hike to any foreign travelers that come to visit The Mighty Five National Parks. It’s close and much less expensive.
Overall we really enjoyed the hike. We loved the scenery and the hiking in water was fun. We highly recommend it. If you are looking for a filling meal after the hike, Cafe Rio is just a few miles away in Cedar City. Be safe! Have fun! And get and and live your life.

Parking: Can get pretty busy on the weekends but park at the Sweet Spot which is great little parking area with refreshments and a few canopies and chairs.
