We embarked on this 21-day expedition with Aurora Expeditions during the month of March.
This remarkable journey took us across vast stretches of the frozen Antarctic continent and its majestic wildlife, followed by visits to the stunning scenery and history of South Georgia, a remote island in the South Atlantic.

Antarctica, South Georgia, Falklands - December 2021 - Part 1
This was an expedition cruise on the Albatros Expeditions ship Ocean Victory in December 2021/January 2022. Cruising during a global pandemic is not easy and we were tested 7 times in all. Not all passengers were allowed to board.
This is a mix of FullHD and some 4K footage.
This video is part one featuring Ushuaia, the Drake Passage, South Shetland islands, the Antarctic Peninsular and the Weddell Sea.
Part two will feature the penguin colonies, seals and whales in South Georgia.
Part three will feature the Falkland Islands.

A trip to Antarctica, South Georgia, and the Falkland Islands is as extraordinary a travel experience as one can have. This region—perhaps the wildest and most beautiful on Earth—features unsurpassed wildlife spectacles and spellbinding glacial and mountain scenery. Our cruises here regularly record seven species of penguins and a fantastic array of seabirds and marine mammals. Excursions on foot and by Zodiac bring close encounters with colonies of penguins and nesting albatrosses and beaches thronging with fur seals and elephant seals. At sea, we’re greeted by a dazzling assortment of petrels, storm-petrels, shearwaters, fulmars, skuas, and more, while some trips have excellent luck with whales of several species.

The islands are said to host upwards of 100 million seabirds, including numerous species of albatross, prions, petrels, and terns. The numbers are astounding: over 100,000 elephant seals and three million fur seals, and enough penguins to fill every cabin on our cruise ship. Unfortunately, they won’t be coming home with us, but some memorable interactions are in store. Antarctica’s visitor regulations require that you remain at least five meters away from the penguins in order to not disturb them, but these curious little guys frequently make the first move, allowing you to observe them up-close.

Antarctica is surely the ultimate destination! The scenic settings are as magnificent as any on earth, and the scale of nearly everything is grand to say the least. Complimenting these astounding vistas are vast colonies of majestic penguins, brash skuas, giant petrels, weird sheathbills, somnolent seals and feeding whales that all add life to the region’s stark and amazing beauty. Our birding cruise traverses some of the most interesting areas in the Southern Ocean; notably the Falkland and South Georgia Islands, both of which are renowned as among the richest of all Subantarctic islands.
