Solo Over Night Backpacking Trip - Yellow River State Forest, Iowa (Late winter)

x

Yellow River State Forest - Iowa's BEST Backpacking Loop

Well this trip was a mixed bag.... My wife and I spent two days backpacking Yellow River State Forest, a beautiful section of eastern Iowa just over the Mississippi with over 25 miles of hiking trails.

We started on the Forester Trail next to the park's headquarters, and hiked clockwise around the main backpacking loop. The terrain was a mix of single and double track trails and the occasional gravel road. We originally thought of staying at Heffern's Hill Camp but ended up hiking a bit further to Brown's Hollow Camp.

But as gorgeous as it was, I experienced my first run-in with severe dehydration, eventually earning me a brief stint in the hospital upon arriving back home (I'm fine now). It was late June so the weather was hot and humid, and although I thought I had been drinking enough water, the constant sweating must have thrown my electrolytes out of whack. I didn't address this in the video, but you'll probably notice me feeling more and more run down as the trip drags on.

Nevertheless it was still a fun time, and I'm looking forward to heading back to Yellow River State Forest in the future to check out the other trails.

Welcome to my random musings on all things backpacking. If you haven't already guessed, my name is Dan. I was bit by the backpacking bug in 2014 and since then haven't gone one day without thinking about my next adventure. I'm from Chicago, a great city but...not so much known for its bountiful backpacking opportunities. Nevertheless, I haven't let that stop me from enjoying the outdoors. Hope my videos leave you with one or two takeaways, or even better, inspire you to head out on the trail. Thanks for watching! Have fun out there!

Freedom and Struggle in 48 States: Solo Van Life DOCUMENTARY

From May 2021 to October 2022, I was on a mission to go on an outdoor adventure and drink a local beer in each state, while living in my converted minivan. Now that I have completed the Lower 48, I'd love to tell you how it started, a highlight or two from each state (good OR bad!), and what I learned about this lifestyle, nature, myself, and my country.

This is America’s Best Wild River Trip | DIY Idaho | 5 days Fly Fishing Hiking & Backpacking

If you pack smart and plan accordingly you are sure to leave with a lifetime of memories. Folks this is going to be 5 days fly fishing one of the most remote drainages in the lower 48.

This is truly the fantasy land most outdoorsman only see in dreams. The landscapes taken out of a Tolken tale will make you fell small at every step and the raw elements will remind you how insignificant you truly are. Even though the surroundings are sure to take the breath away, each step ought to be taken with the utmost care. Always keep you gaze keen on the horizon because no matter how vast, there is a good chance you are not alone.

In a lot of ways, this set of challenges may seem insurmountable for the adventurous angler..
But there is good reason fellowships continue to make the pilgrimage to these wild lands. Thriving native fish still swim strong all throughout these emerald waters. Despite the growing list of obstacles brought on by modernity, relics of yesteryear can still be found at the top of these skeleton systems. Apex predators mix with seasonal residents to give a fleeting glimpse of much wilder times in the not so distant past.

Driving to the West, The Movie: Cross Country Road Trip from Florida to California

One man's dream to drive cross country in order to visit both major winter RV shows in one week, and the largest nomad gathering in the country. The journey begins in Tampa, Florida all the way to Oceanside, California.
In this feature film I document my travels in early 2018, from Tampa, Florida to Oceanside California. I spend a few days in the Arizona desert meeting up with some friends.

Secrets of the Southwest | One amazing month fly fishing Arizona (backcountry adventure)

I never hear any rumblings of state like Arizona being known for its incredible fishing.. Especially when stacked up to some of its northern neighbors.. Many fly fisherman flock to states like Colorado and Utah without so much as a second thought. But this place has been stuck in my mind now for a long time.. and I knew I needed to make my way back

With over Half of the 48th state being classified as a arid and semiarid, this can seem like an awfully strange place if you consider yourself an angler. The knee jerk of public perception tends to label the “Grand Canyon State” as JUST another desert.. For those bold enough to follow your ears and seek out the trail less followed, you’ll see that god truly enriches this mysterious land..Ditat Deus..

Your eyes can feast upon thousands of miles of cold, clean, and clear water meandering through the pine flats and red rocks alike. Boundless is the best way to describe the Opportunities for the angler willing to embrace a little bit of adventure. Be it tiny trickles rushing out of the surrounding mountains, or deep canyon rivers cutting their way through the rocky crag. There is a lot of water..

Finding where to fish can be the easy part, getting there is what separates the wheat from the chaff. Ankle breaking angles tend to be sharper than the cactus clawing at your body and very real danger can always be waiting around that next river bend. Thunderstorms, rockslides, floods, bears, mountain lions, venomous snakes, and much MUCH more are all real possibilities in Arizona.

So is the juice really worth the squeeze? When you compare the rare native trout species holding out in their isolated drainages to the potential for monstrous non native fish species dominating the big water, there is such a wide range of angling opportunities for anglers of any interest level.

Between backpacking, Truck camping, and simple day trips I will be joined by some of my best fishy friends to hunt down the unique fly fishing experiences throughout this desert state and document them all.

Folks this is going to be one entire month fly fishing Arizona.. I hope you enjoy because it all starts now.. Hope you enjoy the story.

We travel with a Microsoft Surface everywhere we go. I edit my videos on it & use it to backup my pictures and vides while we travel. It’s light and the best travel laptop on the market in my opinion.

We use Sony Alpha series cameras to film our videos. They are compact so you don’t look like a super tourist when you take great pictures and videos while you travel.

We use Manfrotto Tripods. They are compact, travel well, and honestly I would not use another tripod for my nice cameras.

Yellow River State Forest - Backpacking Iowa

Yellow River State Forest, A regular stopping ground for myself where I have spent countless weekends and the majority of my 2019 summer hiking in preparation for my Superior Hiking Trail Thru hike. An amazing landscape, especially that of Iowa. I have done a couple of Videos documenting past hikes here but they only scratched the surface. I knew i wanted to get back out to the rolling bluffs and beautiful rock faces to document the entirety of the area not only for me, but for others to see what Yellow River State Forest is really about. Sit back and enjoy this new editing style showing off the beautiful landscape that is Yellow River State Forest.

Loess Hills - Backpacking Iowa - Preparation Canyon / Mondamin Unit

The first weeks of May Iowa Re opened its state parks/ forests from Covid-19 Closures. Eager I head out to the western side of Iowa to hike the Loess Hills. Perfect blue skies meet rolling dunes covered in beautiful prairie grasses. Watch as i hold down the night at Preparation Canyon State park and head out into Preparation Canyon State forest the next day where i set up camp under some pines. Day 3 i head to the Mondamin Unit and climb steep hills and am met with vertical dirt facings.

Loess hills is a beautiful area and a treasure for Iowa. With over 50 miles of trails i hiked 24 miles while there.

Preparation Canyon State Park | Backpacking, Camping & Hiking

Instagram: OutdoorCorn | Questionable facial hair is one of the many poor decisions I made on my trip to Preparation Canyon State Park. Check out the video to discover the rest & see what this hidden gem in Western Iowa has to offer.

Hiking and Camping Along the Mississippi River in Southwest Wisconsin - [Wyalusing] - 4K

After packing up camp at Blue Mound (if you missed that video, you can check it out here: I headed west, towards the mighty Mississippi River, to visit Wyalusing State Park.

Located in Southwest Wisconsin, close to the Iowa border and situated near the confluence of the Mississippi River and the Wisconsin River, Wyalusing State Park offers trails for hiking, biking, and canoeing. There are two campgrounds within the park, and if you plan far enough in advance, you can snag a campsite with a view of the Mississippi!

Around 15 miles of hiking trails, of varying difficulty, are available within the park. A few of the trails offer spectacular views from atop the 500-foot bluffs adjacent to the river. For the more adventurous, it is also possible to trek down to the level of the water and hike along the banks of the river. In addition to the views of the water, there are notable rock formations and caves to explore along the trails. There is something for hikers of all skill levels here.

As always, our hiking and backpacking videos are filmed in 4K Ultra HD. YouTube will automatically tailor the video quality to your device, but we suggest viewing on your 4K-compatible television, or device, for best viewing results.
