Slovakia has a long and varied history and contains Europe’s youngest capital city and also its highest mountain range, as well as cultural masterpieces and unspoiled nature. Bratislava is located in the heart of Europe and is the capital of Slovakia. Surrounded by the City Hall and several palaces, it is like being taken back in time into a rich and glorious past. On the Danube’s Slovakian side, and to the east, is the town of Komárno. In the old urban market square a Miniature Europe with forty five buildings has, in recent years, come into existence. Towers, domes, arcades, half-timbered buildings and woodcarvings frame the square at whose centre is the Millennium Fountain. It is a unique mixture of architecture that signifies the common culture of European countries. Seven hundred metres above sea level, herds of sheep graze peacefully on the slopes of the Great Fatra, the location of the almost hidden and forgotten Vlkolĺnec, a unique village in the heart of Slovakia’s Liptov region. Today it is tantamount to being an open-air museum. Further north is Terchová, birthplace of Slovakia’s national hero, Juraj Jánošík. The legendary robber chief has an exhibition dedicated to him in which the living conditions and customs of that time are on display. The High Tatra is the smallest high mountain range in Europe. A magnificent mountain landscape with rocky mountains and many lakes. In 1947, the National Park of the same name was founded. Slovakia is a land of fortresses, castles and cities that date from the Middle Ages and, despite its many mountain regions, a southern-influenced way of life.

Trnava, in south west Slovakia, is well-protected by a three kilometre-long city wall. Under the protection of the sturdy wall, the monastery and church of Holy Jakobus were created in the fourteenth century with the support of the House Of Anjou. The monastery complex was then considered to be one of the largest religious buildings in the country and served as a place in which God could unite the world. The new city centre contains an imposing Neo-Classical theatre and a tower that was built in 1574. From a height of twenty-nine metres, those in the watchtower were able to warn of any threat of fire. The Jewish synagogue was built in 1831, badly damaged during the Second World War and then neglected for several decades. It now contains a cafe, and women's gallery, along with a permanent collection of Judaica. For centuries, the two towers of the Saint Nikolaus Basilica have characterised the city’s silhouette. Built over a period of nineteen years on the foundations of a Romanesque church, it was completed in 1440. Gothic frescoes still adorn its entrance hall and Baroque altars recall the splendour of a then-flourishing religious city. The colossal wall paintings on both sides of the sixty metre long main nave depict scenes of Christian history. Trnava is a true gem of Renaissance and Late Baroque.

Kežmarok is located in the north east of Slovakia in front of the fabulous scenery of the High Tatra. The town’s fifteenth century Gothic castle is located at the edge of the Old Town and its external walls form some sections of the city wall. At the beginning of the sixteenth century it was owned by the Thököly family and was given its present day splendour in full Renaissance style. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, Kežmarok was a centre of rebellion against the Viennese Emperor. Its Baroque castle chapel is a fine building and was renovated in 1658 at the time of the Protestant Oppression. The castle survived the changing times and is one of the town’s main attractions. In the centre of the old town is the Roman Catholic Holy Cross Basilica with its white façade and tall church tower. Gothic and Renaissance dominate its rich interior. The altars and murals, with figures of the story of the Passion, are one of Slovakia’s most valuable works of art. The highlight is the basilica’s main wing altar that features Christ. The town’s Evangelical-Lutheran congregation had the New Protestant AB Church built between 1872 and 1894. Later followed the annexing of a mausoleum for Imre Thököly, who stood up for religious freedom. It was built according to an unconventional design by Danish architect, Theophil Hansen, who featured Byzantine, Romanesque, Moorish and Oriental elements. Next to it is one of the most beautiful articular churches in Slovakia. The churchs’ treasures include one of the oldest wooden pipe organs, a baptismal font, and splendid altar. These were the directives issued within the framework of the Counter-Reformation of 1681: the Articularies. Built at their own cost, completely made of wood, without a stone foundation and within twelve months, this extraordinary building is one of Kežmarok’s most prized buildings.

The ancient royal city of Košice was once the centre of Northern Hungary and is today located in eastern Slovakia. In the fourteenth century it was granted many privileges and became a city of goldsmiths and bell-founders and also an important trading city. The Gothic Saint Elizabeth Cathedral characterises the architectural ensemble of the Old Town. It was named after the Hungarian king's daughter, Elisabeth, who was married to the Thuringian landgrave, Ludwig The Fourth, and who lived on the Wartburg. From 1380, and influenced by French architecture, the construction of the cathedral took a hundred and thirty years to complete. It was not until the end of the nineteenth century, and in corresponding spirit, that it was radically adapted according to Neo Gothic design. In the middle of a large market place, playful water fountains entertain beneath shady trees. In time with the music, the water jets perform balletic movements that never fail to attract many onlookers. Next, a freestanding carillon that has twenty two bells which ring out hourly with the melodies of east Slovakian folk songs. The East-Slovakian Museum is one of Slovakia’s oldest museums and contains the history of the city and surrounding area. It is also where the Golden Treasure Of Košice can be admired in full: almost three thousand gold coins from eighty one European mints dating from the fifteenth to the seventeenth centuries, plus a Renaissance gold chain. Košice became a powerful centre of both trade and culture and one of the largest and most prosperous cities of mediaeval times.

Wooden Churches (Slovakia) Vacation Travel Video Guide

The wooden churches of Eastern Slovakia are secret treasures. It is most likely that the oldest wooden church is situated in Hervartov, around seven kilometres southwest of Bardejov. In the Carpathian region, this unique architecture has been preserved in the style of the people's Baroque. The Gothic altar, the image of the Last Supper, and most of the wall paintings and ornaments, are in perfect condition. Most of Slovakia’s wooden churches date back to the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and were built following the union of the Greek Orthodox and Roman Catholic churches in 1646. In Krivé there is a Greek Catholic building dedicated to Saint Lukas The Evangelist. Its interior contains a remarkable and well-preserved icon complex that dates back to the sixteenth century. The Ikonostase is the barrier that, in all eastern churches, separates the common people from the sanctum, which is reserved for priests only. Built in Jedlinka in 1763, is the Greek Catholic church of the Protection Of Our Lady. Each wooden church is divided into three sections and they differ in appearance by the shape of their roofs and arrangement of the towers. The interior is dominated by a fully-preserved rococo iconostasis, the most well-preserved monument of its kind in Slovakia. The King's Door and Sacred Gate in the middle of the wall, may only be passed in front of by an ordained priest dressed in liturgical clothing. The side doors are intended for deacons and lay preachers. For centuries the wooden churches of Eastern Slovakia have on the one hand reflected the frailty and poverty of the people, but they also testify to their imperturbable confidence in God who was often the one and only last hope in their life.

Seven hundred metres above sea level, herds of sheep graze peacefully on the slopes of the Great Fatra, the location of almost hidden and forgotten, Vlkolínec, a unique village in the heart of Slovakia’s Liptov region. Today, the vibrant village is tantamount to being an open-air museum. Since 1977 the characteristic blockhouses of Central Slovakia have been listed as historic monuments. A small museum within a farmhouse at the entrance to the community provides an insight into the village life of 1886. In front of the houses are small flower and vegetable gardens, well-cared-for by the farmers’ wives. The houses have gabled saddle roofs and are covered with wooden shingle. For the winter months, firewood is piled against the walls. The village was first mentioned in 1376. Its name was derived from the Slovakian location of Vlk, which means Wolf, a fitting name for this isolated mountain settlement as it was a reference to the former duty of the villagers to build and maintain wolves’ holes. On the outskirts is the picturesque church of the Visitation Of Virgin Mary, built in 1875, a single-nave, Neoclassical building with an adjoining tower and sacristy. It is a sacred building of the Christian church, in the past the only place for social life within the region’s harsh environment. Vlkolĺnec, a place inhabited by wolves!

Banská Štiavnica is one of the most beautiful cities in Slovakia and whose historic buildings form its mediaeval centre. The old town, and silver mines of the surrounding area, have been designated as a World Cultural Heritage Site. The Kammer-Hof was created by the combination of three Gothic buildings during the sixteenth century. Up until the nineteenth century, the mining chamber and the first technical university in the world were located there. The Church Of The Assumption Of Mary was built by the Dominican Order at the beginning of the thirteenth century. For the first time in this region a rib vault was raised in its construction and served as a model for further buildings. However, at the beginning of the nineteenth century the church burned down and was rebuilt in Classical style. Now its altars and paintings shine out in all their glory and highlight the deep religious faith of both miners and mine owners alike. Since 1971, the New Castle has been a museum. On one floor, musical instruments, household items and clothing. Another floor contains numerous weapons and suits of armour which were used during hostilities by the Turks. The city underwent troubled times and its prosperity had to be defended. The wealth of the city and its mining of silver made Banská Štiavnica wealthy and created its historical splendour.

The major part of the High Tatra National Park is located in Slovakia and extends to Poland. It is a splendid mountain landscape with high, rocky mountains and many lakes, was founded in 1947 and given the nickname, Crown Of Slovakia. A healthy tree population surrounds crystal clear mountain lakes and flora which came into existence at the end of the Last Ice Age. Wild boars roam freely in the extensive natural landscape. This is their natural environment in which there is a plentiful supply of food. Chamois can also be seen on the mountain slopes, and in summer between fifteen and thirty of them live in herds, which disband in winter. The high mountains are their retreat, and when they feel threatened they move up to inaccessible heights. The Tatra Railway travels from Štrbské Pleso Station which connects a number of the Tatra region’s spa resorts. The railway has become an indispensable means of transport for growing Tatra tourism. After several short stops is the oldest Tatra community of Strarý Smokovec and along the main road there are charming old villas in half-timbered style. Impressive cloud formations provide views of Lomnitz Peak, the third highest peak of the High Tatra. On the northern edge of Tatranská Lomnica, is a cable car station. Initially, it travels slightly uphill and the first section leads to a mountain station. In winter, there are snow-covered mountain slopes and, in summer, easy hiking trails. The Tatra Nature Park is the embodiment of pure nature, undisturbed tranquillity, indigenous wildlife and, above all, majestic mountains!

The High Tatra is the smallest high mountain range in Europe, a magnificent mountain landscape with majestic rocky mountains and many lakes. The High Tatra National Park was founded in 1947 and is an imposing natural paradise in the heart of Slovakia. Its mountains were created when, in primeval times, the outliers on the southern and eastern edge of the Tatra Massif were forced within a deep graben. Here there is much high mountain plant life, fine endemic species of the Carpathians, and glacial remains. A healthy tree population surrounds crystal clear mountain lakes which came into existence at the end of the Last Ice Age. The Tatra Railway travels from Štrbské Pleso Station which connects a number of the Tatra region’s spa resorts. At first, the line travels alongside a mountain road… with a good view of the local flora. A journey on the comfortable and tram-like carriages became an indispensable means of transport for growing Tatra tourism. In 1892, the region’s first spa and spacious parks were built at Tatranská Lomnica, with government assistance. It includes a botanical garden in which numerous typical mountain plants thrive, as well as rare and endangered species. The mountain station of the Lomnitz Peak appears from within the clouds. The surrounding area is breathtakingly beautiful and the ridges and peaks of the Tatra line up picturesquely. Located deep below, several small mountain lakes appear from among the rocks. What has emerged is an imposing natural paradise, the remarkable Tatra Mountains that are accessible by both road and rail.
