Kashgar - The Silk Road City That Time Forgot

Golden dates and pistachio nuts, Egyptian silk and thin-skinned porcelain. Kashgar, along the fabled Silk Road, had it all – and still does. Its back streets are lined with traditional forges, bakeries, and wood carvers. Not much has changed in a thousand years….

For more than a thousand years, Kashgar has been a key oasis town along the fabled 7,000 mile Silk Road connecting China to the Mediterranean. It was a welcome respite between the vast Taklamatan desert and the daunting Pameer mountains.
It paid dearly for its coveted location.
The Silk Road may be lost beneath the desert sands, but Kashgar’s market is still the largest in Central Asia. It is a window into the past – a time when ancient caravans arrived with sugar and exotic spices.

In Kashgar they found a fertile oasis filled with peaches, melons, nuts, honey, and a bewildering variety of grapes. With apothecaries boasting herbal remedies for any illness, prescribed by some of the most revered physicians in the ancient world. Nowadays Kashgar’s traders stock more modern necessities and other local luxuries – the 21st century equivalent of gold and silver, frankincense and myrrh.

Small businesses like these line Kashgar’s back streets – most Uighur are fiercely independent and prefer to work for themselves. In fact, almost everything in Kashgar gets made the old fashioned way – from table legs to farming tools. There aren’t too many people in this world who can make a crowbar with nothing more than a hammer and a bag of coals.

Almost every corner in Kashgar has at least one bakery – nan is practically a local currency. It is eaten with every meal. A spiked stamp is the baker’s personal signature. It also helps the bread bake evenly.

He dips it in a thick mixture of chopped onions, black cumin, and white sesame seeds, and then plasters it the inside of the tannur oven until it is golden brown.

You have the feeling that the world could end and nobody in Kashgar would even notice.

UNIQUENESS OF URUMQI | XINJIANG PROVINCE | THE SILK ROAD SERIES |UYGHUR CULTURE #EP3

Hi, and welcome back to Suresh Explorer. Thanks for your tremendous support for my previous video of the train to Urumqi from Xian. If you have not watched my previous videos of the Silk Road Series, I placed the links below the description box. If you are new to this channel, your kind gesture to press the subscribe button and sharing this video will be very much appreciated.

Today’s episode is about Uniqueness of Urumqi. A unique city which comes with a very colourful culture. Chinese culture blends with Islamic elements. Urumqi is the capital of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in the far northwest of the of China.[6] Ürümqi was a major hub on the Silk Road during China's Tang dynasty and developed its reputation as a leading cultural and commercial center during the Qing dynasty in the 19th century. Urumqi also quite famous for its claim that it is the most inland major city in the world, being the farthest from any ocean.
The city's three major ethnic groups are Han (majority ethnic group of China), Hui (Han people who are Muslim), and Uyghur (a Turkic ethnic group). Other ethnic groups in Urumqi include Kazakhs, Kyrgyz, and other Turkic people. Regardless of ethnicity, most people in Urumqi can speak some level of Mandarin Chinese, however in some parts of the city Uyghur (Weger), a Turkic language, is dominant. Few people speak English, even in some of the large hotels.

Chinese Hui are Muslims in China, defined by religion, not by race. They are no different from the other Chinese except for their religion. There are about 23 million Muslims scattered all over China. Uighurs are an ethnic group in Xinjiang, also Muslims but speaking Uighur language which is Turkic in origin.

*********************

When I first visited Kashgar's Old City in 2008, the mud brick homes that had stood on that spot for centuries formed a labyrinth of alleyways that was fun to wander around.

Then, in 2009, the Chinese government deemed these homes unsafe and decided to tear them down and rebuild them completely, much to the horror of the international community.

They tore down everything except a small portion on the east side of the city.

Now, eight years later, I have decided to revisit this ancient Silk Road oasis and find out what has happened to this new Old City. Did they rebuild it well? How does it compare to the old Old City? What do the locals think?

Join me as I explore the back alleys of Kashgar's Old City, try a bit of Uyghur street food and even get a personal tour of an old Uighur home!

The Silk Road from Xian to Kashgar (CHINA)

The historic silk road from Xian to Kashgar is an unforgettable trip of more than 6000 km along cultural remnants of the past and different minorities. Starting at Xian, the ancient capital of the Tang dynasty, inhabited by the Han an the Hui minority, we meet Tibetan people in Xiahe, Uyghur in Xinjang, Kazakh at Tian Chi (Urumchi) and Kyrgyz at the Kashgar border.

Kashgar, Xinjiang???????? Real Ambience in Lively Uyghur Bazaar (4K UHD)

Kashgar is an oasis city in the Tarim Basin region of Southern Xinjiang. It is one of the westernmost cities of China, near the border with Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Pakistan. With a population of over 500,000, Kashgar has served as a trading post and strategically important city on the Silk Road between China, the Middle East and Europe for over 2,000 years, making it one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the World.
At the convergence point of widely varying cultures and empires, Kashgar has been under the rule of the Chinese, Turkic, Mongol and Tibetan empires. The city has also been the site of a number of battles between various groups of people on the steppes.
Now administered as a county-level unit, Kashgar is the administrative center of Kashgar Prefecture, which has an area of 162,000 km2 (63,000 sq mi) and a population of approximately 4 million as of 2010. The city itself has a population of 506,640, and its urban area covers 15 km2 (5.8 sq mi), though its administrative area extends over 555 km2 (214 sq mi). The city was made into a Special Economic Zone in 2010, the only city in western China with this distinction. Kashgar also forms a terminus of the Karakoram Highway, whose reconstruction is considered a major part of the multibillion-dollar China–Pakistan Economic Corridor.

Xinjiang Province (Documentary Vlog) | The Long Road Ep. 46

I finally made it to CHINA!!! Or did I?
After Kyrgyzstan I visited the Xinjiang Province. While traveling here, a question constantly popped up in my head. Is this China? That's why decided to make this video a little bit different.
If you find any mistakes in my little research let me know.

The Dead Animal Timecodes
From 02:11 - 02:14
And 04:05 - 04:18 (This is followed by footage from the life stock market until 04:59)

After crossing the border I first visited Kashgar, from there I headed to Urumqi from where I left for Tuerpan. Unfortunately I had to go to Shanghai, so I couldn't see as much of Xinjiang as I wanted to. But I also wasn't well prepared tbh...

But if you want to travel there, check out
