Behind the scenes:
The Shimantogawa is a 196 kilometer long river in the heartland of Shikoku. Being remote from big cities and having no dams it is also called «Japan’s last clear stream». The landmark of the river are its submersible bridges that are made without railings in order to withstand floods. They call it «chinkabashi» in Japan. The Shimantogawa area is also a perfect place a bicycle tour. You can rent a bicycle at Ekawasaki station and ride 40 kilometers along the river to Nakamura / Shimanto. It’s a downhill ride. I made this tour in May 2018.

Technical infos:
I used a DJI Mavic Pro drone for the aerial shots and fixed a DJI Osmo+ (the DJI Osmo Pocket didn’t exist at the time) and a Crystal Sky display on the front of my bicycle.

Shimanto River, Kochi: Japan's Best Secret Place

The Shimanto River is a river in western Kōchi Prefecture, Japan.
Since the river is remote from major cities and does not have any dams, it is sometimes referred to as the last clear stream of Japan.
Running from the high mountains down to the sea, the Shimanto River’s clear waters not only welcome visitors looking to experience unspoiled nature, but also are an essential part of preserving Shimanto area traditions and food culture.

???? FAQ
Q: When did you visit Shikoku, Japan?
A: Mid-October.

Q: Can you get by with English?
A: Yes but especially in this part of Japan, most people don't speak English so you will find yourself more reliant on Google Translate.

Q: Is it easy to drive in Shikoku?
A: Yes, once you get used to driving on the left side of the road, you'll find it easy to drive because it's never busy anywhere. The most challenging part is driving in its valleys where roads often narrow to one lane both ways.

Q: How much did the trip cost?
A: A full budget breakdown will be on our article coming soon.

Q: Were you able to book everything on your own?
A: You can book most things on your own except Kouya, Seirannosato and the rest I booked through Agoda.

Cycling in Japan | Riding the Shimanto River

Cycling in Japan | Riding the Shimanto River

Over the years so many of our riders who toured Shikoku talked about the beauty of cycling along the Shimanto River. It became my top bucket-list ride ever since I first heard of it. It seemed so far away from Osaka but with the introduction of the overnight Orange Ferry Service from Osaka to Toyo, Ehime in 2019 it became a little easier to squeeze in the schedule.

THE ROUTE

My ride begins at the newly opened Yuzan Shimanto Seiran no Sato Minshuku near the start of the Shimanto River and finishes at the mouth of the river. The 142km route mostly follows alongside the river down Route 19, 381 and then 441, passing the quaint submersible bridges (Chinkabashi) along the way.

#cyclinginjapan #shimantoriver #shikoku

THINGS TO NOTE

-Convenience Stores are few and far between so make sure you have plenty of fluids with you.
-Tunnels. There are a lot of tunnels along the route but most had either an alternative path or a sidewalk to ride along and were well lit.
-Narrow paths. There are some narrow paths along the route so you may need to give way to oncoming traffic.

If you do use the Strava Route below then it's probably better to just stick to the river path for the final few kilometres rather than follow the route.
