The Ship Breaking Yards of CHITTAGONG, BANGLADESH

In this vlog I visited the famous ship breaking yards of Chittagong, Bangladesh. Chittagong is known in the shipping industry as the place where ships go to die, but it's also made the news in recent years because of the extremely dangerous working conditions that the men working in the yards are often forced to endure.

The Scrapping Run

Filmed on board CANBERRA during her very last weeks, this video gives a glimpse of the ship and her skeleton crew with the final sailing from Southampton on 10th October 1997, up to her beaching at the shipbreakers in Pakistan.

Bangladesh 2013 Part 1

Bangladesh is a friendly but frequently misunderstood country. It usually only gets a mention by western media when a disaster occurs. Few tourist go there, which is good for those that do, but not so for the Bangladesh economy. This is the first of a series of videos shot on a visit I made in January 2013.
Part one starts with a visit to the spectacular and surreal ship breaking yards on the beach north of Chittagong. Hundreds of ships are dismantled here each year using mostly manual labour, very little mechanisation is employed. The work is hard, dirty and dangerous but it gives thousands of men employment and wages to feed their families. Change must take place, but not at the expense of creating starvation conditions for these people. It took Great Britain over two hundred years to create safe industrial practices and provide the workforce with good working conditions, we cannot expect Bangladesh to achieve these changes overnight.
Following the shipbreaking sequence there are some scenes at a station near Chittagong. Then video shot during a daylight journey from Chittagong to Dhaka on the Sudarna Express. Note the many snack vendors, there is no need to go hungry on a Bangladesh train! The 320km line is currently being doubled throughout to increase capacity and shorten journey time.

The port city of Chittagong representing Bangladesh. On this beach there are huge ships from all over the world. Where ships that have reached their end of life are disbanded. It is also called 'the grave of ships'. Fishing boats and oil tankers that roam the sea around the world come here last. In the case of a large oil tanker, 500 workers dismantle a ship for three months. The Cheetaho is said to have a favorable condition for the dismantling of vessels because the tide is small. Shipbreaking is one of the major industries in Bangladesh. I went to a nearby dismantling company. There are huge parts here and there. Large and small parts factories are located near the dismantling ship. After dismantling the ship, parts are recycled 100%. Skillfully dismantle the iron plate. Parts vary in price depending on the country of origin and quality. When you dismantle the ship, the profits are different. Sometimes there is a lot of profit on a small ship. Mainly Japan. Vessels made in Korea and Russia have a lot of profit. There are a lot of parts that are more expensive than other countries' vessels. Parts that have reached the end of their life on the boat wait for other uses. There are many shops that process iron in the market. It is a place to gather small iron pieces to create new tools. The most common is the knife. A huge ship turned into a sharp knife. I buy a lot of knives from butcher shops, and I use it a lot to slaughter animals during the Islamic festival. Korean cars and Japanese cars are the same as the railroad of a ship. It will only be used differently depending on the process. There is no iron tool that can not be made here. From various tools to farm equipment and kitchen utensils. The ship dismantling work is being utilized as a resource for the local economy through recycling and providing jobs for the common people.

Derek Hess in Bangladesh : Shipbreaking Yard Chittagong

Here you see our trip to the shipbreaking yard exclusive footage!
This area is not allowed for tourist!

Shipbreakers in Gadani beach, Pakistan

This is amazing, everybody knows the shipbreaking yard in Alang, India but there is also one in Gaddani or Gadani beach in Pakistan. The Gadani ship-breaking yard is a centre for the breaking up of derelict ocean-going vessels for scrap. The yard is located in Gadani, Pakistan, about 50 kilometres northwest of Karachi.

This is a compilation from the documentary Workingman's Death, see

In the 1980s,the Gadani yard was described as the largest ship-breaking yard in the world, with more than 30,000 direct employees. However, competition from newer facilities in India and Bangladesh resulted in a significant reduction in output, with the Gadani yard producing less than one fifth of the scrap it produced twenty years ago. A reduction in taxes on scrap metal led to a modest resurgence at the Yard, which now employs around 6,000 workers.

In this clip we see in about 7 minutes how a ship is placed on the beach and breaking apart.

Gadani Ship Breaking Yard

Gadani ship-breaking yard is the world's third largest ship breaking yard located across a 10 km long beachfront at Gadani, Pakistan, about 50 kilometres northwest of Karachi.

Experiences in unknown Bangladesh. The ship breaking yards of Cittagong II

Experiences in unknown Bangladesh: God knows, Chittagong, on the Bay of Bengal, has more to offer than scrapping yards. But these are among the largest in the world. Spectacular insights into the working life of people and the slow death of the ocean liners await. This industry developed in 1969. There are over 70 companies between Bhatiara and Sitakunda. About 200,000 people live directly from scrapping ships. Around 40 percent of the world's decommissioned ocean-going vessels are currently being dismantled. Sales in 2015 are estimated to be around $ 900 million.

Ship breaking in Bangladesh

Photos from 3 visits to the ship breaking yards in Chittagong in Bangladesh. An unusual experience from a unique place, where large ships are taken apart by hundreds of workers with bare feet and the traditional clothing, a skirt called a Longi. No protection and a lot of pollutions. Every year many people die in the effort of taking the ships apart.

Chittagong Bhatiari Shipyards Bangladesh

To tell the truth, I did not have the permission to shipyards, but I saw real disassembling works while I walked near shipyards.

Heavy burden: Ill-protected workers break ships at Alang

On a fetid beach, 35,000 men scrap the world's ships with little more than their bare hands. Despite wretched conditions, they say it is better to work and die than to starve and die.

This is where the world dumps its ships, worn out and ready to be torn apart.

To the left and right, ships lie stranded along six miles of beach, in a hundred stages of demolition. Tankers, freighters, fish processors and destroyers -- smashed, cut, rusting, smoking -- are packed close together. This is the end of the line.

Thirty-five thousand men have come to this once-deserted stretch on the Arabian Sea to labor for the shipbreakers. They live in hovels built of scrap, with no showers, toilets or latrines. They have come from poor villages on the other side of India, lured by wages that start at $1.50 a day, to work at dangerous jobs, protected only by their scarves and sandals.

They suffer broken ankles, severed fingers, smashed skulls, malarial fevers, chol-era, dysentery and tuberculosis. Some are burned and some are drowned. Nobody keeps track of how many die here from accidents and disease. Some say a worker dies every day.'

Chittagong Ship Breaking Yards - Chittagong, Bangladesh

This is just a glimpse. I realize it is not particularly enlightening and I am not particularly articulate. The fact is I was a bit stupefied by the experience. I should have taken a hell of a lot more video and delved much, much deeper. You think you can mentally prepare yourself but you really cannot....not for this. This short video is a supplement for my online journal. You can read the story behind the clip at
