Scotland's Islands

Rick Steves' Europe Travel Guide © 2018 | We'll begin on the tranquil Isle of Iona, where Christianity first reached the shores of Scotland. Then we'll visit another of the Inner Hebrides, road-tripping across the Isle of Skye, where we'll explore Iron Age forts, peat fields, a venerable distillery, thatched crofter huts, and the dramatic Trotternish Peninsula. Finally, we'll sail to Orkney — more Nordic than Celtic — with its stony remnants of a thriving Iron Age civilization and evocative reminders of the 20th-century wartime harbor at Scapa Flow. Scotland's Highlands

Rick Steves' Europe Travel Guide © 2018 | The Highlands stoke kilted dreams of Scotland…where legends of Bonnie Prince Charlie swirl around lonely castles. We visit the Weeping Glen of Glencoe, bustling Inverness, and the battlefield at Culloden. Then we'll make a pilgrimage to the spiritual capital of a major clan, and go prehistoric at Stone Age burial grounds and Iron Age island forts. 3 Days in Islay | Exploring Scotland's Stunning Whisky Island

3 Days in Islay - Scotland's Stunning Whisky Island

In April, me and Amy visited Islay, an island off the west coast of Scotland, famous for its wildlife, whisky, and stunning beaches. We spent 3 days exploring as much of Islay as we could, going bird-watching at RSPB Loch Gruinart, sampling whisky at two of it's world-famous distilleries, and visiting some of the island's most beautiful beaches, including the popular Singing Sands.

More information about travel to Scotland:
Offering some of Scotland’s best scenery, the Isle of Skye is understandably popular. Narrow, twisty roads wind around Skye in the shadows of craggy, bald mountains, and the coastline is ruffled with peninsulas and “sea lochs,” or saltwater inlets. #ricksteveseurope #scotland #isleofskye

ISLE OF SKYE, SCOTLAND (2023) | 6 Nature Places To Visit On The Isle Of Skye

The Isle of Skye is located off the West Coast of mainland Scotland. It’s home to some of Scotland’s most iconic landscapes shaped by jagged mountain peaks, towering sea cliffs, and large stretches of greenery. It’s no wonder that tourists have been drawn here for centuries. In this video, we highlight 6 of the most beautiful natural places to visit on the Isle of Skye.

6. Sligachan Old Bridge
The Sligachan Old Bridge is the first natural beauty you’ll encounter when crossing the Skye Bridge. Being so close to the mountains, the bridge offers majestic views. It was historically an important junction as it was part of the only road that crossed to the western end of the Isle.

???? WHERE WE STAYED
Kinloch Ainort Apartment (HIGHLY recommended!):

5. Fairy Pools
The Fairy Pools are one of the most popular sights on the island. Here, multiple cascading waterfalls are connected by crystal clear pools against a backdrop of rocky mountains. As its name suggests, the scenery is truly fairy-tale-like.

4. Fairy Glen
Fairy Glen is another enchanting place to visit on the Isle of Skye. With its miniature cone-shaped hills and rocky outcrops, it has been said that fairies created this landscape.

3. Quiraing
Quiraing boasts some of the best natural views in all of Scotland! You can take in the landscapes by traversing its windy road and stopping at the viewpoint by the parking lot. But, for the full experience, we suggest going on a hike so you can see the jagged rock formations and waterfalls up close and get better views of the lakes below.

???? Quiraing Circuit Hike:

2. Kilt Rock & the Mealt Falls
The cliffs here are absolutely awe-inspiring thanks to its basalt columns that are said to resemble a kilt. Add to that a waterfall that plummets 90 meters or 295 feet over the cliff into the icy sea below and you’ve got some spectacular nature. This is a 2-for-1 highlight and you can easily observe it from a viewing platform.

Old Man of Storr
A final must-see natural area on the Isle of Skye is the Old Man of Storr, the most photographed spot on the island. The Old Man of Storr is a magnificent pinnacle of rock that towers above the green landscape. To get up close, you need to do a 5 kilometers or 3 mile semi-loop hike, which takes between 1.5 to 2 hours to complete. But try to go early in the morning to avoid the crowds and secure a spot at the parking lot.

A Guide To Island Hopping in Scotland

Island hopping is a great way to experience the offshore gems and secret spots that Scotland has to offer – whether you have a week or a weekend to spend here, the islands won’t disappoint.

Scotland is famed for its staggering mountains, beautiful lochs, and a variety of gems to explore, but, did you know that our islands are magical and otherworldly? Scotland has over 790 islands, each unique in their own way. With incredible natural beauty, dramatic seascapes and magical atmosphere, you’ll never want to leave island life behind.

Our islands are split into a few groups – Inner Hebrides, Outer Hebrides, Shetland, and Orkney.

Navigating across these bucket list-worthy islands is easier than you may think. Regular ferry connections run from the mainland to the islands on the west and north coasts of Scotland, as well as between the islands themselves. Some ferries allow you to take your car so you can continue exploring when you’re there.

You can even fly to various islands from the cities of Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, and Inverness. Or why not fly from island-to-island to save time travelling?

Our islands have more to show than you can fit into a day – so why not stay over? There’s plenty of accommodation options on offer – from cosy cottages on the waterfront and eco-friendly self-catering lodges, to quaint campsites, caravans and B&Bs – but make sure you book ahead!

Venture to the Inner Hebrides if you want to explore places seen in blockbuster films, such as Prometheus, Snow White & The Huntsman, and Flash Gordon, or if you’re up for a scenic sailing tour. If magical lands filled with ancient history take your fancy, then head to Orkney!

The Isle of Mull is the perfect location to spot a variety of wildlife, including eagles soaring overhead, and head to Tobermory to see the colourful houses and buildings as well as trying some fresh seafood in one of the local pubs. Or, if you want to sample a dram or two of whisky then head to the Isle of Islay where you can choose from eight distilleries.

On the west coast, enjoy the untouched beauty of the Isle of Jura, let your inner adventurer out and try windsurfing on the Isle of Tiree, or uncover the turbulent history at the ancient abbey on the Isle of Iona.

If you’re a wildlife enthusiast, the waters off the Isle of Coll are a great place to spot giant basking sharks, and even if you’ve never been there, you’re probably already familiar with Skye – it’s one of the most photographed, and talked about, of the Scottish islands.

The Outer Hebrides are perfect if you’re looking for crystal clear waters and golden sandy beaches. Or hop further afield to Orkney and Shetland to tick these magical places off your bucket list. From remnants of ancient civilisations, the chance to spot the Northern Lights during the darker winter months, and the cries of thousands of seabirds, to lively folk music sessions and ferocious Viking culture – there’s an abundance of things to keep you busy!

Why not follow some of our ready-made itineraries, or plan one of your own to make the most out of your island adventure?

Scotland from Above - Islands

Their creation has spanned hundreds of thousands of years, with intricate patterns, shapes and sizes breaking off to form exciting lands at sea - all waiting for you to explore. There are over 900 islands off the coast of Scotland, all of which boast their own unique personalities and amazing attractions to uncover.

The uninhabited Isle of Staffa off the west coast of Mull is probably best known for its towering basalt columns of Fingal’s Cave. The distinctive six-sided columns of rock were found to be made of basalt, the same as the Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland. Head to the Isle of Islay which is home to a staggering nine distilleries and is best known for its peaty, smoky whiskies. The south of the island also features the impressive Soldiers Rock sea stack which shows the sheer power of the force of water alone and how it manages to sculpt Scotland’s coastline. Just a five minute ferry journey away, the Isle of Jura is one of the wildest places in Scotland with a population of just 200 people, and features the soaring Paps of Jura, and over 5,000 wild red deer. Venture by boat out to the Corryvreckan Whirlpool – one of the largest permanent whirlpools on earth and one of the most dangerous stretches of water around the British Isles. One of the most iconic and easily recognisable places in Scotland has to Tobermory on the Isle of Mull. With its colourful houses dotted along the quaint harbour, this town is a must-visit when on the island. Tuck into a delicious locally-sourced fish and chips, wander along the harbour at sunset, and why not browse many arts and crafts in local shops and cafes?

The most southerly of the Outer Hebrides, the Isle of Barra is best known for its very own beach airport on Traigh Mhor. One of the most unusual in the world, with flights landing on the beach at Cockle Strand in between tides, but at high tide the runway disappears beneath the waves. Elsewhere, explore Kisimul Castle the only surviving medieval castle in the Outer Hebrides, and Bagh A’Deas, an incredible stretch of white sand beach. Located between South Uist and Barra, Eriskay is a hilly little island, stretching only 3 miles and being home to just 200 people. Venture round the island on foot or by bike, explore the Loch Druidibeg Nature Reserve, paddleboard around the surrounding waters, and keep an eye out for wild ponies that make their home here.

North and South Uist are two of the biggest islands in the Outer Hebrides, boasting incredible wildlife, beautiful beaches and captivating landscapes to explore. Located between North and South Uist, Benbecula is a small, flat and low-lying island of the Outer Hebrides that is home to some cracking beaches and golden sand dunes, as well as many stunning walking routes to venture on and explore too.

We don’t need to introduce Orkney! Just off the northern tip of mainland Scotland lies neolithic Orkney featuring sites that are over 6,000 years old and house incredible history and ancestry to explore.

An archipelago of around 100 different islands, Shetland boasts some of the most incredible landscapes in the UK with an array of wildlife and Viking heritage to explore too. St Ninian’s Isle is a stunning tombolo on the west coast of the island – this large natural sand causeway links the South Mainland with the isle. Elsewhere, Clickimin Broch is an ancient settlement that will transport you back in time to around 1000 BC with several remains and structure left to explore.

The small isle of Eigg measures just 5 by 3 miles in size, but is by far the more vibrant populous and welcoming, with incredible views and a welcoming community to enjoy.

A Taste of Scotland's Outer Hebrides Islands, By Victoria Salem

“The Hebrides Islands just off the coast of Scotland are among my favorite places in the world,” says historian Victorian Salem. “Silversea Expedition ships have taken me to the Outer Hebrides a number of times over the last 10 years and more”. Comprised of more than 100 islands and islets, 15 of which are inhabited, the Outer Hebrides are one of the most fascinating sites in the British Isles and a frequent destination of Silversea’s expedition cruises. Salem focuses on two main areas: the island of Lewis and the archipelago of St. Kilda. The latter is located about 100 miles (160 km) west of mainland Scotland 40 miles (64 km) from the nearest land.

Rick Steves' Europe Preview: Scotland's Islands

Check your local public television station for this new Rick Steves’ Europe episode or watch it on We'll begin on the tranquil Isle of Iona, where Christianity first reached the shores of Scotland.

A no-nonsense look at Scotland's most famous island: The Isle of Skye. But will 3 days be enough?

Any excuse to go to Skye. At the very last minute we found out we had 3 days off together and wasted no time jumping in the van and making a beeline for Scotland's most famous island!

This meant we had no time to plan, prepare or even work out how/where we were going to film, so we put that out to you fine people on YouTube! Thanks so much for your awesome suggestions!

We managed to get round a fair few places in the 3 days, but was it really long enough to visit everywhere on our list? I think you probably know the answer, but please watch the video anyway :)

Filmed on the Isle of Skye from Saturday 23rd - Monday 25th April 2022. To get to Skye we followed the A87 followed by a left turn at Shiel Bridge all the way to the Glenelg Ferry. You can of course also take the bridge to Skye, but you'll see why we used this route in the video.

The Tom Scott video I reference is called 'The world's last turntable ferry has a really clever design'.

If you have any questions about a future visit to this wonderful island, be sure to pop them in the comments and I'll do my best to reply!
