Thrilling Flight Over The Namib Desert, Swakopmund

The Namib desert in south western Africa is the oldest in the world. Stretching along the Atlantic coastline from southern Angola, through Namibia and towards the northern tip of South Africa, this vast expanse of silica is home to some of the largest sand dunes on Earth.

The constantly shifting orange dunes merge endlessly in to the horizon. This is Africa’s driest and most inhospitable environment, but far from lifeless. A significant amount of plant and animals species can be found in the desert, many of which are endemic and highly adapted to the dry conditions.

Located in Southern Namibia, Sossusvlei is a region of the Namib Desert that encompasses most of the top attractions in Namib Naukluft Park. For many, the iconic landscapes of red dunes and white clay pans are a reason in and of itself to visit Namibia.

SOSSUSVLEI SCENIC (2 hours 12 minutes)
From Swakopmund flight will take you to the stunning Kuiseb River Canyon, along and into the dune belt, past Tsondab Vlei. The next point of interest will be Sossusvlei and Dead Vlei, where we make a comfortable shallow turn around the area for a view of the pans amongst the 1000 ft tall sand dunes. The next leg over the “Sea of Dunes” takes us past the long-deserted Charlottenfelder diamond camps and on to the coast. We head back up past the Eduard Bohlen and Shawnee Shipwrecks, over the famous Sandwich Harbor wetland. We fly over the vividly colored salt pans south of Walvis Bay, past the harbor, before returning to Swakopmund.
THIS WAS OUR FLIGHT
NAMIB DESERT SCENIC (1 hour 6 minutes)
You will depart in a southerly direction past the Swakopmund – Walvis Bay dune belt and fly over the sand sea towards the Shawnee Shipwreck on the Diamond Coast. Our flight will zig-zag along the coastline past the “Langewand” back to Swakopmund. Seal colonies and an abundance of birdlife will be encountered from a safe altitude. Lastly, you will overfly Sandwich Harbor and the Ramsar wetlands and the salt pans south of Walvis Bay before heading to Swakopmund Airfield

Flying Over the Namib Desert - How a Scenic Flight Should be Done.

We Go So You'll Know - Flying The Namib Desert & Skeleton Coast

The highlight of any luxury Namibian safari is seeing the Namib desert and Skeleton coast from the air. The best was to do this is a scenic flight that takes you from Walvis Bay, over the desert and the iconic Sossusvlei area and back via the Skeleton Coast.

More about the experience here:

Sunway Safaris Namibia Sossusvlei Camping

The enormous red sand dunes of Sossuvlei and the Sesriem Canyon are highlights of any tour to Namibia, and Sunway Safaris offers a number of tours visiting this amazing destination.

The Namib-Naukluft National Park - is a national park of Namibia encompassing part of the Namib Desert (considered the world's oldest desert) and the Naukluft mountain range. With an overall area of 49,768 km2 (19,216 sq mi), the Namib-Naukluft is the second largest game park in Africa and the fourth largest in the world.
Dead Vlei - Nearby is yet another place of no return this one even older, and much deader than Sossusvlei. Known as Dead Vlei or dead marsh (Vlei being Afrikaans for a type of marsh), it is found among the tallest dunes in the world – home to Big Daddy the 343m high dune shadowing over Dead Vlei. Dead Vlei was once like Sossusvlei, with the river draining into it nourishing desert life and even trees. But no longer. Some 900 years ago the climate dried up, and dunes cut off Dead Vlei from the river. It became too dry in Dead Vlei for the trees to even decompose. They simply scorched black in the sun, monuments to their own destruction. The trees, now over 1000 years old, form a barren forest.

Namibia - Scenic flight

Taking a scenic flight in Namibia is a wonderful experience to see from a bird’s eye view the beautiful landscapes of the Namibian desert and Atlantic coastline. We enjoyed a scenic flight (around 2 hours) from Swakopmund, flying over the Namib Desert to Sossusvlei, Skeleton Coast and back to Swakopmund. During the flight, you see not only the red dunes of Sossusvlei but also penguins lying on the coast, whale bones and shipwrecks.

Namib Sand Sea: Namibia's newest UNESCO World Heritage Site

The best way to see a Namibian natural wonder is from a bird's eye view. On the wings of a SkyReach BushCat, we flew over miles and miles of dazzling dunes. This coastal desert may be the oldest in the world. The landscape is exceptionally beautiful and infinitely vast. And, at times, the sandy, uninhabited landscape resembles the surface of the moon.

Coming from Windhoek with our T210N V5-ZEB and routing to Sossusvlei. We were flying against the sun most of the time, but we had nice captures of dune-shadows. We circled all the main area of the Vlei and Dune 45 before landing at Sossusvlei Lodge Airstrip just before nightfall.
