Top 10 Things to See and Do on the Solomon Islands

Get more Tips here!

Taking a trip to the Solomon Islands will be unlike any other vacation you’ve ever experienced. When visiting one of the last untouched destinations in the Pacific, here are 10 things to see and do.

1. See the Traditional Villages
Choose the Kmaga Village experience where you’ll sleep in a beachfront bungalow and receive top-notch hospitality from the villages’ chief and local families.

2. Visit Central Market in Honiara
Head to Central Market in Honiara on the island of Guadalcanal. The stands are lined with crafts made by talented artisans, fresh fish, fruits, and veggies, and handmade souvenirs for you to take back home.

3. Rent a Boat
Various companies offer boat charters, or you can get behind the wheel and navigate the Pacific on your own. But you can always rent a kayak for a few hours and take in the sights as you paddle along the coast.

4. Snorkel in the Bonegis
They are known for being the best places to explore the Solomons’ marine life. Beneath the Pacific, you’ll see beautiful coral reefs, tropical fish, octopus, and maybe even a few shipwrecks from World War II.

5. The Vilu War Museum
The remnants from those battles during WWII with Japanese and American aircrafts can be found at this open-air museum located deep within the forest of Honiara.

6. Go Birdwatching
Grab your binoculars and your long-focus lens camera and make the trek out to Imbu Rano Lodge. Some of the bird species that you’re likely to encounter include parrots, kingfishers, and white-eyes.

7. Travel to Skull Island
Catch a plane to Munda. And take a boat to Vonavona Lagoon to reach the country’s most sacred place: Skull Island. It’s surrounded by human skulls who were killed during the islands’ headhunting days.

8. Chew a Betel Nut
You should take part in some of their traditional ceremonies, including a little bit of betel nut chewing. A betel nut is the brown or yellow seed of the Areca palm, and users have cited a euphoric feeling while chewing on the nut. All we have to say is: chew at your own risk!

9. Hike Up Kolombangara
This volcano last erupted 10,000 years ago. You’ll need a tour guide to lead you along the way and hack away at the overgrown brush that covers the trail. And after two days, you’ll finally reach the crater.

10. Fall in Love With Tenaru Falls
If you enjoy the great outdoors, we guarantee you’ll fall in love with Tenaru Falls near Honiara. To reach the falls, it’s best to rent a 4WD vehicle because it’s no easy trek through the rough and treacherous path. But it’s definitely worth the drive!

Boat and Hike to Savo Island Volcano, Solomon Islands

This is a compilation of video clips from a trip I took to the Savo Island volcano in the Solomon Islands in June 2012. I was with two really very chill Australian guys and, for the hike, a local guide who somehow walked barefoot over sharp rocks, through scalding water, and over blistering hot rocks.

First, sorry about the shaky camera work. I shot all of this on my iPhone; often while getting bounced around a boat, or while hiking. Fine cinematography it ain't, but it hopefully provides a good sense of the trip.

The trip started with a drive west from Honiara (Guadalcanal) to our launching point. Several bridges had been washed out during a 6-hour downpour two days earlier, so the driver had to make some treacherous river crossings. At the launch -- a hut on the northwest side of Guadalcanal -- we boarded a plastic banana boat with a disproportionately large motor to make the crossing to Savo Island. There were what seemed like fairly large swells, particularly because I was in the front of the boat and was violently jarred each time we landed. The boat crossed over part of Ironbottom Sound that saw some of the fiercest naval battles of WWII. Beneath us, far out of sight, were dozens of sunken Allied and Japanese warships.

As we approached Savo Island, dolphins greeted us (seen in the video).

We disembarked at Sunset Lodge on Savo Island, a peaceful group of huts with a view of what is apparently one of the nicest sunsets in the south Pacific. As soon as we stepped ashore, the lodge staff handed us coconuts with straws: a nice treat after the rough crossing.

We then boarded the banana boat again and circled to the far end of the island, where we began our hike. The first part was unremarkable, following a wide and dry river bed. The river bed, however, narrowed, the hike became more scenic, and water appeared. I never figured out how we started at the ocean in a dry riverbed which ended up with far more flowing water as we got HIGHER. The water also became progressively warmer as we ascended (did the already warm water evaporate in the hot, tropical sun?).

After about 1/2 hour, we turned up a side stream and headed into the jungle. Here, the water went from bathwater warm to hot-to-the-touch. We ascended rickety timber ladders up two steaming waterfalls (in video). At one point, we rested near a 5 meter waterfall. I looked above me, and soda straws -- a formation I was familiar with from caving (a very narrow, hallow, stalactite) -- dripped from the rock above me. I hadn't seen much limestone in the area. I suspect the soda straws were created by the hardening of some other chemical dripping from the overhang ceiling; the steam from the hot stream condensed on the slightly-cooler rock forming chemical-rich droplets. The smell of sulpher was quite strong.

The jungle itself was beautiful and lush, but it was hot. Not only were we facing the normal tropical heat, but the steam rising from the stream created sauna-like conditions.

The volcano itself reminded me of parts of Yellowstone, though obviously far smaller, in the middle of an isolated south Pacific Island, and without the safety barriers. Fumaroles shot out of holes in the colorful scree. Scalding water boiled up from the ground. The rocks themselves radiated heat. At one point (this is all in a video), a large lizard scurried up a stream of boiling water dripping down a steep slope above us, seemingly oblivious to the heat from the water.

We scaled the dome of the volcano, which apparently has risen considerably over the past years. Atop the dome, water boiled out of the ground into a small pool and flowed down to the stream below. Here, the heat was almost intolerable (part of the fun). I don't think I've ever experienced anything like it outdoors.

From the volcano, we retraced our steps back to the beach (the total hike was 4-5 hours) and took the banana boat back to Sunset Lodge, where we ate a fabulous lunch of local fish before making the now-smoother crossing back to Guadalcanal.

In closing, I highly recommend this trip for folk who can tolerate heat and want a truly wild experience on an easy day trip from Honiara (Guadalcanal). Bring lots of water, and take lots of pictures!

Solomon Islands: Savo Island Hike

I had an amazing day out at Savo Island. I organised the trip with Bernard through the Tourist office in Honiara, he was extremely helpful and organised the whole day trip for me and a friend. The day included travel from Honiara, lunch and a choice of two activities. The options for activities included: a volcano hike, dolphin watching, a village tour and bird watching. Usually, guests of Sunset lodge stay there for the weekend and then return back to Honiara. However, I was short on time. The day trip was amazing and well organised. Bernard’s family were very welcoming and kind and it was lovely to meet them. I would definitely recommend going and I look forward to going back at some point and seeing them all.

SOLOMON ISLANDS: Stunning views Kolombangara ???? volcano (Pacific Ocean)

Kolombangara volcano, Solomon Islands, Pacific Ocean - the spectacular volcano of Kolombangara in the Solomon Islands. Let's travel to the Solomon Islands in the Pacific Ocean to view the volcano of Kolombangara (also spelled Kulambangara volcano) which is a possibly active stratovolcano that forms the almost perfectly round, 15 km diameter Kolombangara Island in the New Georgia Islands group of the Solomon Islands. The name of the volcano of Kolombangara (also spelled Kulambangara volcano) in local language roughly translated to Water Lord, referring to the many (about 80) rivers and streams that drain its flanks!! Here, we are going to view this spectacular island and volcano from Gizo, which lies just 5 kilometers away.
The Solomon Islands, a nation of hundreds of islands in the South Pacific, has many WWII-era sites. Guadalcanal, a province and one of the archipelago’s largest islands, honors fallen Allied soldiers at its U.S. War Memorial. Guadalcanal is also home to the nation’s capital, Honiara, whose bustling Central Market showcases the islands’ produce and traditional handicrafts.

The town is a time to wake up time copper sites are without electricity. Those who pops up to start the day and the end of the day sun sets, the clock does not handle its rule of nature. People gathered in the morning on a sandy beach next to the beach. We're waiting for 8 o'clock to go over there. By 8:00 because the mega-new Ford Back laying eggs. Ford has mega show saying now laying eggs. Ford has mega really digging to lay eggs. The high heat generated in the earth by volcanic action lays the eggs come here because it helps to hatch. This time the birds departed people sell the land. Wihaeseoda pick up the bird laid eggs. Mega Ford lays its eggs digging up to 1 meter. I gave birth to an egg into the hole, and to know the real Mega pod. It's big to know? I is larger than an egg. Taste better. But this time came the mega pods from the hole. Spawn will not come out of crumbling dirt. When I do a deep foot waves and the earth too large, sharp. When people dig the eggs, it does not take more than a certain amount. The rest are left to incubate. Yiranda considers it is sufficient for himself, because as much as the meal a day.

This is why I dive the Solomon Islands.

Remote and truly beautiful the Solomon Islands is a diver's dream destination. Part of the coral triangle with a staggering diversity of marine species, coral and dive sites, it somehow remains one of the least dived areas of the world.
