San Pedro Volcano Hike, Lake Atitlan, Guatemala

Are Robbers a Problem Hiking The San Pedro Volcano?

The San Pedro Volcano is one of 37 volcanoes in the country of Guatemala and the oldest of the three that rise above the beautiful Lake Atitlan. San Pedro soars to an impressive height of 3,020 Meters, just shy of 10,000 feet. It is a stratovolcano and not considered active. Summiting San Pedro is a very popular tourist activity in the region, but the trail has been plagued in the past with robbers, causing some uncertainty and fear amongst hikers. To reach the beginning of the hike you travel to the town of San Pedro La Laguna which sits on the volcanoes slopes. For many people including our family this means a boat ride across the lake.

So how safe is it to climb San Pedro? This is one of the most frequently asked questions when people consider this hike, because of it's shaky history with robbers on the trail. Are you going to get robbed if you try to climb San Pedro? This was a question that we asked many people while living in Panajachel before we ever attempted to do the hike. The answer we usually got, was that robbers were not really as much of an issue anymore. This always came with a caveat though, that it was still a possibility. In response to the problems with robbers on the trail, the Town of San Pedro la Laguna sends a pair of police officers up the volcano every day and hiking alone is highly discouraged. Contrary to what some places on the internet say, you do not need to hire a guide to go up the volcano. Guides are included as part of your fee to enter the ecological park that protects the volcano.

In our experience this hike was nothing but fun! It was difficult yes, but robbers were the least of our worries. This doesn't mean that they don't exist however. Talking with our guide and with the local police we learned that they had arrested people just a few weeks prior to our arrival. Just be smart about things. follow the rules, don't hike alone, and stick to the trail. In our opinion robbers on San Pedro are the exception, not the rule and the Guatemalan authorities are doing their best to make this a fun and safe adventure for all to enjoy.

San Pedro Volcano, Lake Atitlan, Guatemala: Solo Hike

A video documenting my solo ascent to the top of San Pedro Volcano at Lake Atitlan, Guatemala. I began alone from the village of San Pedro and hiked up to the summit and down again before midday. Armed robberies apparently have occurred on the mountain in the past, but luckily I wasn't bothered by anyone.

Lakefront Airbnb - Kitchen With A View! Lake Atitlan, San Pedro Guatemala

Discover a great place to stay in an airbnb right on the lakefront with an open-air kitchen with a great view! In Guatemala, we enjoyed spectacular sunrise views over Lake Atitlan and its active volcanoes right outside of San Pedro La Laguna, a beautiful village on Lake Atitlan, Guatemala.

San Pedro is a small village at the foot of a massive volcano and the most popular of the resorts on Lake Atitlan. We stayed at Casa Kawoq, a lake side AirBnB with stunning views of both the lake and its surrounding mountains.

One of our favourite adventures in all of Guatemala was the Indian Nose hike, with panomaric views of Lake Atitlan at sunrise. It is a steep but short 45 minute hike up a small mountain, in the pitch black to get there before sunrise. Detailed info on how to DIY the Indian Nose hike, which leaves from the village of Santa Clara:

San Pedro La Laguna is so Much Fun (Lake Atitlan)

Buy me a coffee

San Pedro is a sexy little pueblo of Lake Atitlan in Guatemala. It is the most popular spot for backpackers, for good reason. Even though it has a laid back vibe, it has plenty of activities, from kayaking, and paragliding, to language learning, chocolate tasting, yoga, textile, and classes for everything. It's also has many nice cafes, good food and active nightlife.

On the negative side if you try to hike the Indian Nose without a guide you might be robbed by the local banditos and the police will do nothing to help you. Hopefully they get some special forces up in those hills. It wouldn't take much to camp out a few mercenaries and have them bust the robbers.

Today I explored, hiked shopped, and toured all around San Pedro La Laguna. I saw how the local textiles are produced, tried making my own chocolate, visited a local art gallery, and hiked a local lookout point.

Is it Dangerous to Hike San Pedro Volcano without a Guide?

You’ve been WARNED. Hiking San Pedro Volcano in Lake Atitlan is known to be DANGEROUS due to bandidos waiting to rob tourists on the trail. HOWEVER… it is still entirely possible to safely enjoy this challenging hike even without a paid guide.

The trail is typically patrolled by police, but only in the mornings. We caught the police on their way down for the day and they told us to make it quick at the top since we would be by ourselves. Mornings are also better for clear skies and more people on the trail.

???? Start early, plan for extra time (bc it’s HARD), and try not to go by yourself.

Hiking San Pedro Volcano, Lake Atitlan, Guatemala

I woke up at 5am and hiked up San Pedro Volcano by Lake Atitlan, Guatemala. The view was pretty incredible. Lots of photos to come on and on facebook.com/thehippievanman

GUATEMALA, LAKE ATITLAN, VOLCANO - Behold the Majestic Beauty of Volcán San Pedro!!

Read all about my adventures in the travel memoir Beers, Tears & Broken Veneers available to buy right here on Amazon:

There are dozens of VOLCANOS dotted all over the COUNTRY OF GUATEMALA. Most BACKPACKERS and TRAVELLERS visiting this country will attempt to climb at least one of them. Volcán San Pedro is based on the SOUTH WESTERN shores of LAKE ATITLAN.

Standing at 3020m, its certainly not the highest volcano in the land but its proximity to the lake make it one of the most scenic. I had the pleasure of staying in two locations on the LAKE, SAN PEDRO and SANTIAGO which gave amazing views of the volcano and I was able to set up a few breath taking TIME-LAPSE shots of the volcano. I will be using the FOOTAGE in some up-coming VIDEOS but the footage is so AMAZING that I decided to dedicate a whole video to them.
