Bariloche is the most visited destination in Patagonia and one of the most visited destinations in Argentina. It receives around one million tourists annually, mainly during the winter season, among which those coming from countries in Europe and South America stand out for their influx.
It is the most populated Argentine city in the Patagonian Andes. It is located in the Nahuel Huapi national park, in the southwest of the province of Río Negro, next to the Andes mountain range, on the southern shore of Lake Nahuel Huapi, 832 km from Viedma, the capital of the province.

San Carlos de Bariloche, conocida simplemente como Bariloche, es una ciudad argentina que, con 125 000 habitantes (2020), es la más poblada de la provincia de Río Negro, siendo además la capital del departamento Bariloche.
Bariloche es el destino más visitado de la Patagonia y uno de los destinos más visitados de la Argentina. Recibe alrededor de dos millones de turistas anualmente, principalmente en temporada invernal, entre los que se destacan por su afluencia los provenientes de países de Europa y América. Es conocida por ser el destino principal del viaje de egresados secundarios en Argentina y Uruguay.
Es la ciudad argentina más poblada de los Andes Patagónicos. Está ubicada en el parque nacional Nahuel Huapi, en el suroeste de la provincia de Río Negro, junto a la cordillera de los Andes, en la ribera sur del lago Nahuel Huapi, a 832 km de Viedma, la capital de la provincia.
Sus reservas naturales, que incluyen lagos, bosques y montañas, y sus destacados centros de esquí son el principal atractivo. La ciudad ha sido considerada por algunas fuentes como el segundo destino de esquí a nivel mundial y el más grande de América del Sur.45 Está además en una zona donde se puede observar y estudiar al cóndor andino.
Bariloche es además uno de los polos científicos y tecnológicos más importantes de América, donde se encuentran el Centro Atómico Bariloche de investigación, perteneciente a la Comisión Nacional de Energía Atómica, y el Instituto Balseiro, de la Universidad Nacional de Cuyo, donde se dicta la carrera de Física, Ingeniería Mecánica y Nuclear e Ingeniería en Telecomunicaciones. La ciudad es sede de INVAP, empresa argentina de alta tecnología que diseña y construye reactores nucleares, radares y satélites, entre otros.
En noviembre de 2012 Bariloche fue nombrada «capital nacional del turismo aventura» bajo la Ley 26802 sancionada por el Congreso Nacional Argentino.
El nombre de la ciudad, San Carlos de Bariloche, está compuesto de dos partes las cuales tienen cada una un origen diferente. Por un lado, Bariloche deriva de la palabra mapuche vuriloche, que significa gente de atrás de la montaña, dado que así era como los mapuches al oeste de la cordillera denominaban a los que vivían del lado este, es decir, la zona donde se encuentra la ciudad.
Por otro lado, San Carlos surgió a partir de un error en una carta enviada por el Sr. Enrique Paterson Neil, pionero inglés en el Nahuel Huapi, a Don Carlos Wiederhold, comerciante chileno de origen alemán que se había instalado en el centro de lo que hoy es la ciudad, en 1895, en la cual el británico confundió el tratamiento de Don por el apócope San, quedando así el nombre de la ciudad.
Para fines del s. XIX, la ciudad era conocida como San Carlos. Sin embargo, en 1909 se llamaba oficialmente Bariloche. Fue a partir de un decreto sancionado el 26 de julio de 1927 que la ciudad pasó a llamarse de manera oficial San Carlos de Bariloche.

Bariloche is a town in Argentina’s Patagonia region. It borders Nahuel Huapi, a large glacial lake surrounded by the Andes Mountains. Bariloche is known for its Swiss alpine-style architecture and its chocolate, sold in shops lining Calle Mitre, the main street. It's also a popular base for hiking and skiing the nearby mountains and exploring the surrounding Lake District.

Bariloche in Argentina is located at the northern end of the region Patagonia and serves as the perfect gateway to start our adventure. Surrounded by lakes and situated close to the Andes you can go for big variety of activities. While it is one of the largest ski ressorts in South America in winter it turns into a hikers paradise in summer.
Rather than hanging out in the city itself we used it as a base to drive around the 7 lakes, hike & camp to the Tronador and climbed our way up to Frey, Cerro Campanario and Catedral. With this we can give you a bigger picture of the area and you can easily use this video as a Bariloche Guide for your own trip!
This part of the trip was executed within 1,5 weeks by using the local buses and a well planned itinerary after we flew in from Buenos Aries - following I list all the places we visited & Things to do in Bariloche:

San Carlos de Bariloche Travel Guide - Argentina Beautiful Experience
San Carlos de Bariloche is a city in the province of Río Negro, Argentina, situated on the foothills of the Andes, surrounded by lakes (Nahuel Huapi, Gutiérrez Lake, Moreno Lake and Mascardi Lake) and mountains (Tronador, Cerro Catedral, Cerro López). It is famous for skiing but also great for sight-seeing, water sports, trekking and climbing. Another claim to fame is its Swiss-like atmosphere and its chocolate boutiques and breweries. Look for the St. Bernard dogs on display for tourists.
San Carlos de Bariloche is located within the Nahuel Huapi National Park. After development of extensive public works and Alpine-styled architecture, the city emerged in the 1930s and 1940s as a major tourism centre with skiing, trekking and mountaineering facilities. In addition, it has numerous restaurants, cafés, and chocolate shops.
Tourism, both domestic and international, is the main economic activity of Bariloche throughout the year. The city is very popular with Brazilians and Europeans. One of the most popular activities is skiing, and most tourists visit Bariloche in winter (June–September). Regular flights from Buenos Aires via LAN airlines and Aerolíneas Argentinas serve the city year round. The main ski slopes are the ones at Cerro Catedral, the biggest ski resort in South America and in the southern hemisphere. During the summer, beautiful beaches such as Playa Bonita and Villa Tacul welcome sun-bathers; brave lake swimmers venture into its cold waters (chilled by melting snow). Lake Nahuel Huapi averages 14 °C in the summertime. Bariloche is the biggest city of a huge Lakes District, and it serves as a base for many excursions in the region. Activities such as fishing, whitewater rafting, and birdwatching are popular with tourists. Trekking in the nearby mountain wilderness is supported by a few high-mountain huts operated by the Club Andino Bariloche. The city is also noted for its chocolates and Swiss-style architecture. Many high school students in Argentina take a senior trip to Bariloche, and the town is well prepared to host these kinds of groups.
The city is served by San Carlos de Bariloche International Airport (IATA BRC/ICAO SAZS) equipped to receive any kind of aircraft. Several of Argentina's most important airlines maintain regular flights to Bariloche, as well as some international lines from neighbouring countries, especially during the ski season. The city is linked by train with the city of Viedma through the Tren Patagonico that crosses Argentina from the Andes to the Atlantic Ocean. San Carlos de Bariloche lies close to the Chilean border and is connected to Chile by the Cardenal Antonio Samoré Pass crossing the Andes Mountains. The city has a terminal railway station that links it to Viedma. The main Neighbourhoods are Belgrano, Jardín Botánico, Melipal, Centro, Las Victorias, Las Marias, Dos Valles, and Playa Bonita.
The soaring peaks of Cerros Catedral, López, Nireco and Shaihuenque (to name just a few) – all well over 2000m high – ring the town, giving picture-postcard views in nearly every direction. These mountains aren’t just for gazing, though – excellent snow coverage (sometimes exceeding 2m at the end of the season) makes this a winter wonderland, and a magnet for skiers and snowboarders. In summertime the nature buffs take over, hitting the hills to climb, hike trails, fish for trout and ride mountain bikes and horses.

Sus reservas naturales, que incluyen lagos, bosques y montañas, y sus destacados centros de esquí son el principal atractivo. La ciudad ha sido considerada por algunas fuentes como el segundo destino de esquí a nivel mundial y el más grande de América del Sur. Está además en una zona donde se puede observar y estudiar al cóndor andino.
Bariloche es además uno de los polos científicos y tecnológicos más importantes de América, encontrándose INVAP, empresa provincial de alta tecnología que diseña y construye molinos eólicos, radares y satélites, entre otros.
En noviembre de 2012 Bariloche fue nombrada «capital nacional del turismo aventura» bajo la Ley 26802 sancionada por el Congreso Nacional Argentino.

Qué Visitar en San Carlos de #Bariloche: Cerro Campanario
Han pasado 28 años desde la última vez que subí al Cerro Campanario y aquella vez recuerdo, durante el viaje de egresados en la escuela primaria, lo hicimos caminando por el sendero interpretativo, atravesando el bosque. Hoy lo hicimos pero, en su telesilla y en familia. Una experiencia inolvidable!
