Sailing to Alaska! The underwaterworld is totally mesmerizing

After motoring most of the way up north along the coast of the picturesque British Columbia, we set all canvas to sail across the border to Alaska!

We are greeted with a bunch of thick fog and a mesmerizing underwater world that is taking up all my attention.

Alaska has always been a place I wanted to travel to and I am thrilled to set foot on this magical stretch of land, even if it is just for a short while. A big big thank you to Captain John for bringing me here!

Ahoy,

Nike c/o SV Persistence

North Pacific Circumnavigation Hawaii Majuro Guam Japan Alaska

A North Pacific Circumnavigation started from British Columbia on a 10.7m sailboat in September, 2017.
SV Amigo visited San Francisco, Hawaii, the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, and the Northern Marianas Islands.
The homebound legs included ports in the Inland Sea and in the Sea of Japan.
The Bering Sea was then crossed from Kushiro to reach Attu, Alaska. Canada was entered at Prince Rupert, and Amigo’s home at Eagle Harbour Yacht Club in West Vancouver was reached in September, 2018.
Various incidents occurred: A 3-day near gale was encountered on the US West Coast required dodger and sail repair in San Francisco.
Amigo and crew were detained for five days at Kanazawa on suspicion of terrorism by the Japanese Coast Guard; on one of the days interrogation started at 0630 and finished at 2330.
Amigo ran aground three times while attempting to transit Dry Passage in Alaska. Amigo returned to Petersburg to spend a second night. We then learned, “No one goes that way!”.

North to Glacier Bay! | Ep. 12 | Awesome Sailing in the Alaskan Inside Passage

Ahoy sailors! In this one, we leave the spectacular Takatz Bay and return to Warm Springs Bay for another soak in the hot springs. With a strong southerly blowing, we make a snap decision to change course and head north up Chatham Strait instead of heading for Fredrick Sound. We head to the beautiful Pavlof Harbour and Chichagof Island, then carry on to Swanson Harbor at the junction of Icy Strait, Chatham Strait, and Lynn Canal.

New Crew, Chill Sailing, and Great Fishing in Alaska | Ep. 20 | Petersburg to Clarence Strait

After a life altering week of solo sailing, my friend's Rachael and Ben join me for the next leg from Petersburg to Ketchikan, Alaska. The week starts out very wet, but we don't let the drizzle dampen our moods as we enjoy some sailing down the dredged channels of Wrangle Narrows.

We spend the night at St. John's Harbor in Sumner Strait, then awake to a dry, but light wind day. As we continue south, we enjoy some excellent fishing as we slowly sail to Exchange Cove near the top of Clarence Strait.

House Sized Ice Bergs and Solo Sailing in Alaska | Ep. 17 | The Inside Passage: Juneau to Tracy Arm

Heres one for the solo sailing fans!

After a few weeks away from the boat, I return to Juneau and start solo sailing south. Mellow but steady winds keep me cruising along happily as I make stops in Taku Harbor and Tracy Arm Cove. In Tracy Arm, I check out the immense icebergs floating around and enjoy the continued sunny weather.

It had been a long time since I did a solo sailing trip beyond 2-3 days. As soon as I left the harbor in Juneau and got the sails up, a great sense of calm came over me. I was thrilled and excited to test my abilities, and have the opportunity to quietly reflect on my life, which at that point was going through some major changes.

This, and the next couple episodes will feature solo sailing before I pick up new crew in Petersburg!
