Expedition Cruises to Antarctica with Poseidon Expeditions

This new video by Poseidon Expeditions takes you to magical land of Antarctica and shows life aboard our expedition vessel Sea Explorer. Watch to make sure that cruise days are filled with new experiences and emotions that later turn to some of the best memories ever made.

We are immersed in the incredible polar nature: crystal-clear waters pierced with giant icebergs, whales swimming in the vicinity of our expedition crafts, and the pelagic birds hovering above in the sky. This wouldn't be complete without the symbol of Antarctica - the penguins. South Georgia shelters thousands of them.

The polar regions may seem remote and inhospitable, but that is not the case for Poseidon Expeditions. We will take you to Antarctica in grand style. The video showcases the spacious accommodations of the Sea Explorer, and leisure areas like the restaurant, the library, open decks and the presentation lounge.

Antarctica basecamp adventure, Polar Cruise - KE Adventure Travel

Multi active polar cruise on Antarctica including kayaking and mountaineering, from a ship basecamp.

This is Polar cruising in Antarctica for the restless! We sail down to the ‘High Antarctic' where we have numerous inlets and channels to choose from to set up base. We will have 2 or 3 different base camp locations for the duration of the voyage. Once we are in place we go out and enjoy multi-activities which go beyond the normal shore program. We can take the kayaks out, or enjoy some time on shore snowshoeing or if we are more intrepid we can do a few hours mountaineering on Antarctica, giving us a huge sense of achievement and a true feeling of the remoteness and scale of Antarctica.

Antarctica is the highest, driest, windiest, emptiest, coldest place on earth. An ice sheet covers all but 2.4 percent of Antarctica's 14 million square kilometers. At its thickest point the ice sheet is 4,776 meters deep and averages 2, 160 meters thick. This is 90 percent of all the world's ice and it is 70 percent of all the world's fresh water. There are lots of penguins, whales, seals, krill (the main food for whales), and even fish in Antarctica's waters, but there are no land mammals and, as far as scientists know, no native peoples. Eskimos and polar bears are found in the ARCTIC, not the Antarctic.
The mean annual temperature at the South Pole is minus 56 degrees F. During the Austral Summer, temperatures at McMurdo base, on the Ross Sea, may get as high as 40 degrees F, while at the South Pole, at the Amundsen- Scott station, temperatures may reach 0 degrees F. The area below 60 degrees south enjoys one long day and one long night each year. The sun sets in March and rises in October. The seasons in Antarctica are the opposite of the seasons in the Northern hemisphere--summer is October through February. Winter is March through September.
The continent is roughly 14 million square kilometers (5.4 million square miles). The USA is only 9.36 million square kilometers (3.6 million square miles). The distance from Washington, D.C. to McMurdo station is approximately 14,830 kilometers, or 9,920 miles.
Scientists work on all kinds of unique projects in Antarctica, including penguins, Antarctic cod (they have a special antifreeze agent in their blood!), whales, seals, global warming, climatology, meteorites, glaciology, astronomy, volcanoes, UV radiation, and more. Scientists also study humans in Antarctica, doing research on how the human body adapts to cold and how the human mind and heart react to extreme isolation.

Blue Whale Yachting Adventure

Setting sail from Queenscliff on board the Blizzard (a now familiar vessel to Wildiaries) we forayed into the Southern Ocean on a pelagic expedition in search of Blue Whales. Whilst a little less 'strait' forward than it first seemed - several days of dedicated searching, seamanship and good cheer conjured from the Southern Ocean one the Earths true treasures of the deep.

From a group of strangers with little to no experience at sea we all came a long way in the short time we spent together. The general consensus was that the experience should go on forever. It would seem that our roller-coaster ride with its up's and down's simply combined to be one hell of a ride for all. Everyone had something unique to take away from the trip, whether it was Gary's P plates (awarded to him for his endeavours on Surprise Bay, which saw the trip leader's camera gear come to a salty end) or seeing a Blue Whale for the first time.
