THE LEANING TOWER of SAAREMAA! EXPLORING ESTONIAS SUMMER DESTINATION ISLAND & VILSANDI NATIONAL PARK

Our summer tour of Estonia is really giving us the chance to get to know this beautiful little country and it’s islands. In this video we head out to Vilsandi National Park on the island of Saaremaa. We make the 4.5km walk over to see Kiipsaare Lighthouse which is known as the Pisa Tower of Saaremaa due to becoming tilted as a result of strong storms and waves.

Kiipsaare lighthouse was completed in 1933 and is 26 metres high. Initially, the lighthouse was constructed about 100m from the coast; however, due to changes in the shoreline, it is now located in the sea!

We had a great time checking out all the beautiful secluded little beaches along the way and as we have found everywhere here this summer in Estonia, the mosquitoes (and other bitey flying things) are everywhere! Bug spray is essential but only does so much - our legs are both covered in bruises and bites from the relentless little critters - you’ll also spot a few squashed on our car windscreen as a handful flew in pretty much every time we opened the doors.

The walk was very scenic though and rewarding, once you reach Kiipsaare lighthouse and the beach which also has a little sand spit that goes way out to sea! :)

Upcoming videos!

Join us next time as we continue exploring the Estonian island of Saaremaa and head East to see something out of this world, literally!

Is SAAREMAA SAFE NOW in 2020? ESTONIAS FORMER ‘CORONA ISLAND’ EXPLORING KURESSAARE CASTLE & FORTRESS

The CAPITAL of SAAREMAA - KURESSAARE we’re finally exploring the island after the pandemic quarantine.

In this video we continue our tour of Estonia as we head over to KURESSAARE CASTLE in Kuressaare, the capital of Saaremaa which during the height of the pandemic in March was labeled the ’CORONA ISLAND’ after half of it’s population were thought to have contracted COVID19 and the island was completely shut off from the Estonian mainland. Check out our comparison video to see how well they dealt with it:

We were so pleased to finally make it to this island and to check out one of the most spectacular castle fortresses we’ve ever seen! The island is spacious and the people are so friendly, there is no crowding so it feels completely safe and no one appears to be living in fear of the coronavirus here.

After exploring the town of Kuressaare in the morning: we waited for the rain to pass then made our way over to the castle for an afternoon of sunshine and sightseeing!

The well preserved castle and fortress dates back to the 14th century and like most of Estonia it too has had a colourful history. We just couldn’t believe that just a short walk from the main town of Kuressaare there is this incredible Castle - fortress (Arensburg) just perched next to the sea, it is truly incredible!

Upcoming videos!

We continue exploring the island of Saaremaa and head out of the main town to see what else the island has to offer.

Is SAAREMAA SAFE NOW in 2020? ESTONIA’S FORMER ‘CORONA ISLAND’ EXPLORING KURESSAARE after QUARANTINE

The CAPITAL of SAAREMAA - KURESSAARE we’re finally exploring the island after the pandemic QUARANTINE!
In this video we continue our tour of Estonia as we explore Kuressaare the capital of Saaremaa which during the height of the pandemic in March was labeled the ’CORONA ISLAND’ after half of it’s population were thought to have contracted COVID19 and the island was completely shut off from the Estonian mainland. Check out our comparison video to see how well they dealt with it:

This island is beautiful and is the island that many Estonians head to for the summer and many own summer houses in Saaremaa. Whilst we were locked down in Tallinn during the pandemic we discussed the idea of travelling here one day when the island was open again, so during our summer tour how could we not go and check out this place?

Kuressaare is full of charm and beauty and it was clear to see that the island, just as we thought, had handled the pandemic incredibly well, everyone seemed happy, safe and perfectly back to normal much like the rest of Estonia. We spent the day wandering through Kuressaare looking in shops and we visited the market stalls which are full of lovingly made Estonian items for tourists and one very kind market vendor gave us a special little gift after Craig commented on how cool the item with a carving of the island of Saaremaa was. We stopped for lunch at Chameleon Cafe Lounge which is tucked just off the main centre of Kuressaare near to the multi coloured fountains. After lunch we take a little look inside the Kalev chocolate store full of handmade chocolates and marzipan! On our way towards the famous Kuressaare Castle we head over to the monument for the Inhabitants of Saaremaa who have lost their lives in the war of independence (1918-1920).
